  • A study was conducted to find the habitat change and the insects and flora that live in the abandoned paddy field in Daun-dong Jung-gu, Ulsan, to provide basic information for the conservation and restoration of Nannophya pygmaea Ramber from June 2008 to July 2011. In case of the insects, 53 species in 32 families of 10 orders were identified, with Odonata, Hemiptera and Coleoptera being the three dominants (18.9% in total). For flora, 60 species in 30 families of 23 orders were identified, with Cyperaceae and Gramineae being the dominants(13.3% and 11.7%, respectively). The influx of woody plants in the surveyed area led to the rapid progress of succession and the carnification of the habitats for aquatic plants. Besides, the number of phytophagous insects and mountainous insects were increasing. Consequently, the habitat of Nannophya pygmaea Ramber has been relocated to the place, whose water depth remains unchanged at 2.5~9.5cm and water space is opened. Therefore, it is required to conduct long-term monitoring and appropriate management based on the ecological characteristic of the habitats to continuously conserve and maintain the habitats of Nannophya pygmaea Ramber.

  • Using three-components geomagnetic data from a permanent geomagnetic observatory in Icheon, we have computed the power spectrum of each geomagnetic component, amplitude, phase and estimation error of transfer function for each day in the 6 months period July 2002${\sim}$December 2002. The temporal variation of power spectrum have random appearances with repeating relative strong and weak magnitude, which is considered as solar activities. However, there is no clear long-term trend. In the case of amplitude, phase and error of transfer function, even though there are some random patterns over the periods of 1000 s and under 100 s, they seem to be comparatively stable without manifest temporal changes. Futhermore, we have estimated electrical field by assuming P$_{1}\;^{0}$ spherical harmonics and then calculated the approximated apparent resistivity for each day. As a result, the variations of resistivity depend on the temporal magnitude of spectral power in horizontal magnetic fields rather than hydrological changes in near surface.

  • The changes of geomagnetic flux density distribution on the ground surface by underground empty spaces had been investigated through the variations of the soil density and measuring heights. The geomagnetic flux density distributions were monitored for the surfaces of different density, sink-hole and tunnel by fluxgate-type magnetometer. The underground empty space and low soil density decreased the geomagnetic flux densities, which were decreased from the boundary of raw and low-density (empty) grounds, and showed the lowest value at the center of low-density (empty) ground. The decreases of geomagnetic flux density by underground empty spaces could be found at the surface with the tunnel located at 80 m underground. And, the underground defects of empty spaces, low density zone, fracture zone and sink holes could be monitored by the phenomena of this decreasing flux density.

  • A habitat evaluation method was used to estimate the optimum suitability of the study area for the target algae. Habitat evaluation was carried out using an habitat evaluation procedure (HEP) so that the optimum suitability was quantitatively estimated for carrying out marine afforestation in the study area. According to the results of the suitability analysis, the variation of light and wave conditions according to depth showed the factors with the largest impact to involve the spatial distribution of suitable locations within the area. The total suitable area selected was calculated to be 18ha. The quality of the target algae (Ecklonia cava Kjellman) habitat was analyzed using an habitat suitability index (HSI) model of the HEP, which showed 0.55-0.907 (the maximum value being 1.0). This indicated that artificial reefs for afforestation should be installed to zonation type because the suitable area selected (The HSI value was 0.55~0.907) was distributed within the same depth line.

  • This study was performed in lab scaled oxidation pond. The removal efficiency of pollutant on the influence of changes of hydraulic retention time and pond style was investigated. The correlation between organic removal efficiency and dissolved oxygen concentration on algal photosynthesis showed the light time revealed a higher relationship more than the dark time, and the squares of the correlation coefficient of 15 days retention time were higher than that of 5 days in single pond. The variation of dissolved oxygen concentration of a series pond was from 4.2 to 19.8 mg/l under 5 days retention time, the concentration of dissolved oxygen increased with increasing step of series pond. Between the single pond and a series of pond system, a series of pond system showed better organic removal efficiency. Average removal efficiency range of $TBOD_5$ and $SBOD_5$ was $49{\sim}83%$ and $87{\sim}92%$, respectively. Algae should be removed appropriately to increase the removal efficiency of organic matter.

  • Broad range of fatty acids were reported to show antimicrobial activities against broad range of microorganisms. However, possible changes of the antibacterial activity of a fatty acid based on structural variations are largely unknown. This study was focused on determination and comparison of the antimicrobial activities of the medium chain fatty acids, based on the position of carboxyl groups on either terminal end, against the representative food-pathogenic bacteria. Over all, mono-carboxyl medium chain fatty acids (MC-MCFA) presented stronger antimicrobial activities against the food-pathogenic bacteria tested including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) than di-carboxyl medium chain fatty acid (DC-MCFA). In addition, some of MC-MCFA and DC-MCFA showed high possibility to be used as a synergistic adjuvant for both the commercial β-lactam family antibiotics and aminoglycoside family antibiotics against MRSA.

  • It is very important to predict the environmental changes in the land-surface as a way of prevention of sustainable nature. This study investigated the difference between the predicted and actual data of Anmyeon-do from 1981 to 2000 through a fuzzy logic operation using multi-spectral image. According to literature survey, maps, and ground truth data, the types of land-use have changed due primarily to shore reclamation or wild land and grassland fostering before the eighties. After the mid-eighties, however, a number of private residents and commercial stores quickly have spreaded throughout beach resorts and quasi-agricultural and forest areas. Moreover, shore and community regions were severely damaged in the nineties with increased farmland, due to the development of tour places and expansion of city area. The predicted result of the environmental changes in the land-surface using the fuzzy logic operation was almost similar to the state of Anmyeon-do obtained through the satellite image. Particularly, the flat lands near the shore was predicted to change slightly. This area is largely under development, thereby raising concerns on the shore environment. Thus, this method is applicable to conducting research on the change in the land-surface.

  • We investigated the plant phenology on the threatened species for climate change in the summit area of Mt. Deogyusan which is a representative sub-alpine zone in Korea. We had performed the monitoring survey of plant phenology on 38 species including 20 trees and 18 herbs from May 2009 to November 2010. The investigated phenological charateristics were five dates for leafing, flowering, floral abscission, autumn leaf colors and leaf abscission on each plant species in sub-alpine region. The climate data were measured from November 2009 to December 2010. The range of temperature was from 30.4 to -$20.3^{\circ}C$ at Hyangjeokbong to Jungbong region, and the relative humidity was 100% to 3.4%. The leafing dates in 2010 were similar to 2009 or were 6-20 days delayed in most of the investigated species except Veratrum oxysepalum and Sanguisorba hakusanensis which showed 8 days earlier leafing dates in 2010. The biggest difference among phenological characters was found in flowering dates. The flowering dates of early Spring blooming species such as Heloniopsis koreana, Rhododendron yedoense for. poukhanense and Viola orientalis showed 13-20 days earlier in 2010, and the several summer flowering species as Viburnum opulus var. calvescens, Smilacina japonica and Bupleurum longeradiatum showed 6-10 days delay in 2010. The dates for floral abscission and autumn leaf colors in 2010 were delayed about 10-18 days, and leaf abscission dates were similar to 2009. The effects of climate change on the phenology for the threatened species in sub-alpine zones of Korea are occuring especially on flowering, floral abscission and autumn leaf colors.
