Objectives: This study investigated the optimal combination of 3-component photoinitiation system, consisting of CQ, p-octyloxy-phenyl-phenyl iodonium hexafluoroantimonate (OPPI), and 2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) to increase the degree of conversion of resin monomers, and analyze the effect of the ratio of the photoinitiator to the co-initiator. Materials and Methods: Each photoinitiators (CQ and OPP) and co-initiator (DMAEMA) were mixed in three levels with 0.2 wt.% (low concentration, L), 1.0 wt.% (medium concentration, M), and 2.0 wt.% (high concentration, H). A total of nine groups using the Taguchi method were tested according to the following proportion of components in the photoinitiator system: LLL, LMM, LHH, MLM, MMH, MHL, HLH, HML, HHM. Each monomer was polymerized using a quartz-tungsten-halogen curing unit (Demetron 400, USA) for 5, 20, 40, 60, 300 sec and the degree of conversion (DC) was determined at each exposure time using FTIR. Results: Significant differences were found for DC values in groups. MMH group and HHM group exhibited greater initial DC than the others. No significant difference was found with the ratio of the photoinitiators (CQ, OPPI) to the co-initiator (DMAEMA). The concentrations of CQ didn't affect the DC values, but those of OPPI did strongly. Conclusions: MMH and HHM groups seem to be best ones to get increased DC. MMH group is indicated for bright, translucent color and HHM group is good for dark, opaque colored-resin.
To improve the application of polymeric dental restorative composite (PDRC) for the posterior and anterior restoration, silica bridged with siloxane unit was firstly prepared by heat-treating a silica filler at various temperatures. Degree of conversion (DC), depth of cure, and dynamic volumetric polymerization shrinkage values of PDRC filled with silica bridged with siloxane unit were investigated to study the effect of heat-treated silica on the polymerization behavior of PDRC. From the experimental result, it was found that depth of cure was decreased with an increase of heat treatment temperature. on the other hand, both DC and polymerization shrinkage values were uniformly enhanced with increasing the heat treatment temperature. This phenomenon can be explained from the study that showed decrease of average particle size of silica resulted in the increase of relative amount of resin matrix in PDRC.

The degree of conversion of cross-linked polymer has great importance in determining the physical and mechanical properties, and biocompatibility. Therefore, this study examined the comparison of light-cured composite resin polymerization of various light-curing systems composed of plasma arc, halogen, LED curing units and pluse-delay curing with FTIR. From this experiment, The following results were obtained : 1. From FTIR, the degree of conversion(DC) of composite resin was 34.52-49.31%, DC of composite resin used in Flipo was $39.36{\pm}1.22%$, CrediII $45.64{\pm}1.34%$, XL3000 $43.48{\pm}1.34%$, VIP(mode 4) $44.31{\pm}0.72%$, LUXOMAX $49.31{\pm}2.37%$, Elipar Freelight $44.51{\pm}0.62%$ and $34.52{\pm}0.85%$ in pulse-delay curing. 2. The degree of conversion of composite resin in each light-curing unit was highest DC of the LUXOMAX system, lowest DC of the pulse-delay curing. 3. Compared with other curing system, Flipo, LUXOMAX, and pulse-delay curing were significant difference(p<0.05). 4. In same curing method group, the differences of each light-curing unit were no significace in halogen(conventional) curing method(p>0.05), but significance in plasma arc curing and LED curing method(p<0.05).
Vinyl acetate (VAc) was polymerized at 30, 40, and 5$0^{\circ}C$ using 2,2'-azobis (2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile) (ADMVN) and tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA) as the initiator and the solvent, respectively. High molecular weight (HMW) atactic poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was prepared by saponifying the poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) synthesized. The effect of polymerization conditions were investigated in terms of conversion, degree of branching for acetyl group of PVAc, and molecular weight of both PVAc and PVA. The polymerization rate of VAc in TBA was proportional to the 0.49th power of ADMVN concentration in good accordance with the theoretical value of 0.5. HMW-PVA with high yield could be obtained successfully, probably due to lower polymerization temperature and decreased chain transfer reaction rate which was achieved by adopting ADMVN and TBA. PYAc having average degree of polymerization (P$_{n}$) of 10000~13000 was obtained at the conversion of 35~70%. Saponification of so prepared PVAc yielded PVA having P$_{n}$ of 2400~6100. The syndiotactic diad content increased with decreasing polymerization temperature and increasing VAc concentration due to a steric hindrance effect of TBA during polymerization.
To evaluate the dental restorative application of polymer composites filled with hydroxyapatite (HAP) which is an inorganic component of human bone material, dental properties of the polymer composites were investigated. A visible light system was utilized to activate the acrylate resin matrix of the composites. Maximum loading percentage of HAP in composite was 65 wt% and the depth of cure was 6.0 mm which can be applicable for dental restoration. With increasing the HAP content, degree of conversion of polymer composites was slightly decreased, however, polymerization shrinkage value was not varied. Diametral tensile strength value was enhanced with an increase of HAP content, however, there was no strict trend between flexural strength and HAP concentration. Anyhow, polymer composites prepared herein have superior mechanical properties sufficient specifications applicable to dental materials.
In order to study the radiation curing behavior of poly(ethylene glycol 400) dimethacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, we investigated the influence of temperature and photoinitiator concentration by photo-DSC. As the number of ethylene glycol unit, the concentration of photoinitiator, and the reaction temperature increased, the reaction speed of PEG400DMA and EGDMA increased. Although the reaction speed of PEG400DMA was lower than EGDMA, the overall conversion of PEG400DMA was high.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effect on oxygen inhibition layer(OIL) for the interfacial bonding between resin composite layers, including shear bond strength, fracture modes and degree of conversion. The first layer of specimen was filled with Z-250(shade A3) and was cured for 40s. The second layer of specimen was filled with same composite(shade A1) and was cured for 40s. The first layer of specimens for each group were prepared by methods as followings. Control(curing in atmospheric air), Group1(curing against Mylar strip), Group2(scrubbed with a acetone-soaked cotton), Group3(using Tescera light cup), Group4(using Tescera heat cup), Group5(stored in disti1led water for 30days at $37^{\circ}C$), Group6 (using bonding agent). The results were as follows: 1. There was no statistically significant different shear bond strength between control and group 1(p>0.05). 2. Group 2 showed significantly lower shear bond strength than control and group 1(p<0.05). 3. The observation of the fracture surface leads to the evidence that a major difference occurs in the case of control, group1 and group 3 samples which break mainly cohesively while the other groups break in majority adhesively. 4. The results of FTIR showed that the degree of conversion was the highest in group 2 and the lowest in control group(p<0.05). It can be concluded that an OIL is not necessary for bonding with composite resin. But if a reduced critical amount of the unreacted monomer is present, it was detrimental to bonding additional layers of composite. Further study, such as the quantitative analysis of the unreacted monomer are required.
Dental properties of polymer composite loaded with hybrid filler of barium silicate (BaSi) and hydroxyapatite, which is a principal component of human bone material, were investigated. A visible light system was utilized to activate the acrylic resin matrix of the composite. Based on the experimental results, it was found that mechanical strength of the composite was consistently increased with an increase of BaSi content in the hybrid filler. And those value rose above the dental specification enough to apply for dental materials. However, abrasion resistance was slightly decreased with increasing BaSi content in the filler. Depth of cure value was 6 to 9 mm applicable for dental restoration irrelevant to hybrid filler composition. On the other hand, there was no strict trend between filler composition and polymerization shrinkage as well as degree of conversion.
A transformat Alcaligence eutrophus GA5 harboring phbC gene from A. latus was cultivated for production of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-4-hydroxybutyrate)[P(3HB-4HB)] containing high molar fraction of 4-hydroxybutyrate(4HB)] containing high molar fraction of 4-hydroxybutyrate(4HB). Transformation did not influenced significantly on total cell growth, on total cell growth, concentration, and content of P(3HB-4HB), however, significantly influenced on 4HB molar fraction in P(3HB-4HB) increasing from 12.3 to 23.5 mol% after 48 h cultivation in two-stage using 1.0%(W/V) of ${\gamma}$-butyrolactone as a precursor compare to parent strain. Above increment may be due to the accelerated polymerization between 3HB and 4HB converted from precusor compound by amplified phbC gene. Citrate increased remarkbly total cell mass and P(3HB-4HB) concentration, but did not influenced on the molar fraction of 4HB, meanwhile, magnesium ion influenced on P(3HB-4HB) concentration and 4HB molar fraction significantly. The two-stage cultivation method was modified, in such a way minimizing P(3HB) accumulated inside of cell grown at first-stage, consquently, 26.3% of P(3HB-4HB) containing 61.0 mol% of 4HB fraction was obtained after 72hr. Furthermore, semi-homopolymeric P(4HB) containing 92.0 mol% of 4Hb was obtained, and its structure was confirmed by $^1$H-NMR.
In this study, Ultraviolet (UV) curable urethane acrylates for ink binder was prepared by reaction of IPDI, polyether polyol and HEA. The UV curing behavior of compositions with HEA/PETA ratio on UV irradiation time was investigated by FT-IR spectrophotometer, probe tack tester and Photo-DSC. Conversion % and gel content were increased with increasing UV irradiation time, but probe tack was decreased. Storage modulus, tensile strength and decomposition temperature were increased as PETA content increased. In case of HEA/PETA ratio was 30/70, adhesion property of UV-cured composition on PMMA sheet was excellent.
