This study explores differential value implications of R&D expenditure across firms, especially in terms of growth potential of small businesses. Analyzing Korean listed firms for the period from 1982 to 2014, we document the followings. First, large firms, defined as the top quintile group based on market capitalization, have spent higher R&D expenditure compared to small (bottom quintile group) and medium (middle quintile groups) firms and the difference between groups has enlarged over time. Relatedly, the persistence of R&D spending, measured by the association between current R&D expenditure and cumulative future R&D expenditure over the next five years, is lowest in small firms. Second, R&D of large (small) firms are more (less) likely to generate operating profits over the next five years. Additional analyses suggest that the relation between R&D and gross margin is strongest in large firms, suggesting that R&D underlies their competitiveness in the product market. Third, small firms have borne the highest uncertainty related to R&D investment proxied by the association between current R&D and volatility of future earnings. As a result, the likelihood of R&D leading to future patents is also lowest in small firms. Fourth, the probability of moving up to the next size group within the next five years is significantly lower in small firms than others. Finally, we find that the divergence in R&D expenditure between large and small firms is positively associated with product market concentration. Overall, our findings confirm the small business growth trap in relation to R&D investment.
This study investigates and analyzed to whole public offering listed company whether enterprise's integration information system exercises some influence on business users. Many medium and small enterprise introduce and operate new integrated system, but there was difficulty in Productivity Analysis that is real by unstableness of system, preservation and insufficiency of management control etc. Therefore, in this study, designed study model and research hypothesis laying stress on information strategy, system quality, information quality of information support agents to measure integration information system to relative stable enterprise. This study may become data that is useful in stable system introduction in various field of industry hereafter medium and small enterprises. This study Was construed by thing which degree that give influence of positive in user satisfaction as findings information system quality, quality of service, information support agents is good in study analysis is very high. The other side, information strategy was expose for factor that do not exert big influence on user's satisfaction, and got sequence that is affected in some degree if user satisfaction is high in details article.
This study analyzed the effect of small and medium businesses' R&D intensity and patents on their price-earnings (P/E) ratios. Regression analysis was conducted on a sample of manufacturers listed on the Korean Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (KOSDAQ) for the past decade (2000~2009). The result is summarized as follows. First, a negative correlation was identified between companies' R&D intensity and their P/E ratios, but no significant relationship was found between their numbers of domestic patent applications and registrations and P/E ratios. Second, the analysis of the effect of the companies' R&D intensity on their P/E ratios resulted in a negative correlation of -1%. Third, the analysis of the effect of the companies' number of domestic patent applications and registrations on their P/E ratios showed that they did not have any significant relationship. Fourth, high-tech firms' R&D intensity had a negative correlation of -1% with their P/E ratios, but had a positive correlation of 1% with their numbers of domestic patent applications. Furthermore, the R&D intensity of middle-to-high and middle-to-low tech enterprises had a negative correlation of -1% with their P/E ratios, whereas their numbers of domestic patent applications and registrations had no significant relationship with their P/E ratios. The above results suggest that to produce successful outcomes from their R&D investment and patents, individual firms need strategies for technological innovation that relate to their technological level.
This study examine the relation between small and medium firm's stability and tax avoidance. We use some financial data of small and medium IT firms in KOSDAQ during 2001 to 2009. Following previous research(Desai and Dhamapala 2006), we estimate corporate tax avoidance. And we use quick ratio and current ratio as a short-term stability and equity ratio as a long-term stability. Empirical results follows as. First, It was not significant statistically between short-term stability and corporate tax avoidance. Second, it was significant statistically between the long-term stability and corporate. As corporate tax avoidance increases, the long-term stability(equity ratio) was low. Our analysis provides the empirical evidence between long-term stability and tax avoidance. It offers implications of corporate tax avoidance to small and medium IT firms in KOSDAQ. But this results is difficult generalization because of sample limits.

Since the KONEX market was launched in 2013, many studies of the market have focused on policy reports and management of the market. In this study, we analyzed the impact of training and employee benefits expenses on business performance in the KONEX market in comparison with firms in the KOSDAQ 100. The expenses associated with employee training and benefits can have an overlapping power when explaining the business performance. To determine the net effect of each variable on business performance, we used regression by successive orthogonalization. The training and the employee benefits expenses in both markets showed a positive effect on business performance. However, in the KONEX market, we found that the lag effect of training expense to business performance was relatively smaller than in the KOSDAQ 100. This difference may be related to problems such as short continuous service and frequent turnover of SMEs in Korea, and implies that overall human resource management should be implemented to increase the efficiency of training expenses.
The proportion of small and medium sized enterprises based on the number of corporations in China is 99%, the number of employees is 80%, and the proportion of GDP is 60%. These facts show that small and medium sized enterprises have an very significant effect on the economic growth of China. However, most of the researches conducted so far have studied large corporations, thus, there are relatively insufficient researches on the determinant of the capital structure of small and medium sized enterprises. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to confirm the factors that determine the capital structure of small and medium sized enterprises in China. To achieve this purpose, we performed multiple regression method to 45 small and medium sized manufacturing enterprises listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange of China. Results of this study are as follows. First, the growth appeared to have a significant positive effect to the debt ratio in 1% significance level. Second, the profitability appeared to have a significant negative effect to debt ratio in 1% significance level. Third, the firm size appeared to have no effect on the debt ratio. Fourth, the secured value and tax shield effect by non-debt appeared to have a weak positive effect on the debt ratio, however these variables showed statistical insignificant.
This study examines the effects of entrepreneurial orientation and external oriented organizational culture on the firm perfornamance focusing on mediating effects of open innovation. The survey was conducted on Korean manufacturing firms with 100-5,000 employees among listed companies and external auditing companies. The validity of the research model and hypotheses was verified through analysis of structural equation model for 283 valid responses. Empirical results show that entrepreneurial orientation positively affects both open innovation and firm's performance. The external oriented organizational culture of firms appears to be positive effects on open innovation, but the effect between the external oriented organizational culture and firm's performance shows no statistical significance. Open innovation have positive effects on firm performance. In addition, a test for mediation effects of open innovation reveals that a full mediation exists between the external oriented organizational culture and firm's performance, while there is a partial mediation effect between entrepreneurial orientation and firm's performance. This study contribute to the literature by deepening understanding on the open innovation. We propose an integrated model for examining antecedent factors, open innovation and performance.
This study analyzed the accounting conservatism of companies listed on KONEX. The analysis of the existing accounting conservatism presents the analysis results for the KOSPI market or the KOSDAQ market. However, in July 2013, Korea opened a new publicly traded market called KONEX, which has been continuously operated to increase the possibility of SMEs' financing. However, research on KONEX has not been conducted relatively actively, and the current prior research is also focused on earnings management. This study differs from previous studies in that it analyzes accounting conservatism, which is one of the accounting policies. For this purpose, the period from 2014 to 2020 was set as the analysis period, and empirical analysis was conducted using the asymmetric timeliness models, Ball and Shivakumar (2005) and Basu (1997). As a result of the analysis, conditional conservatism was also confirmed in the KONEX market. That is, it was confirmed that the timeliness of the bad news was higher than the good news. Second, no significant difference was found in the results of analyzing whether there is a difference in the conservatism of KONEX companies according to the size of the auditor. In other words, it was confirmed that the size of the auditor in the KONEX market is not a significant variable. This study expanded the existing research in that it analyzed accounting policies targeting the KONEX market.
This study empirically analyze the effect of government R&D investment to find out whether it complements or substitutes for the firm R&D. In order to do it panel data set was constructed for the period of three years from 2012 to 2014 based on the number of 1301 data by utilizing national technology information service(NTIS) and publicly announced financial statement. Analysis was implemented in consideration of size of the firm(large corporation, small and medium sized firm) of which sample was obtained from only listed company. The result of two-way fixed effect model and two-way random effect model is as follows. In case of large corporation, government R&D investment has an effect of substitute for the company's R&D on the other hand, small and medium sized firm shows an complementary effect. It verifies that current R&D policy is appropriate. Therefore government's direct subsidy is expected to be successful to fertilize firm's innovation by allocating government R&D budget efficiently.
When I examined the corporate financing statistics in Korea, I have recognized that there are several trends of them. First, large enterprises use bank loan and direct financing like corporate bond as debt. Second, small and medium companies mainly use bank loan only. So I argue that there is sample selection bias in corporate debt choice and using sample selection methodology is more adequate when analysing the behavior in corporate debt choice. Therefore I have tested panel sample selection model, using the listed korean firm data from 1990 to 2013 and I have found that the panel sample selection model is appropriate.
