After the Ferry Sewol accident, public interest in marine safety has increased. However, as the marine leisure tourism population increases, the number of casualties caused by marine accidents is increasing, so marine safety education is urgently needed. Since facilities related to marine safety education in Korea are geographically biased to the west, regional imbalances in education are significant. Therefore, this study suggested solutions to the problems of developing educational contents and securing budgets and professionals by using idle facilities of the Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology(KIMFT) located in Busan as a maritime safety education center. In addition, as a result of estimating demand using the gravity model, it was estimated that the demand would range from 150,000 to 130,000 per year. This study sufficiently proved social policy validity for policy suggestions using existing idle sites as maritime safety education centers based on objective verification methods and is expected to contribute substantially to policy promotion in the future.
The service sector comprises two thirds of world GDP in 2005 and takes 20% of the world trade. As the technologies such as telecommunication technologies advance, the long-distance trades in services is expected to increase. But there are few empirical research on the flows of services between regions. This paper studies the pattern of flows of long-distance trades in services across the regions. Since it is very hard to collect reliable data on long-distance trade in services, we collect data from regional input-output tables of Korea. The results shows that the hard service which can be consumed spatially separated from production tends to have more long-distance trade than the soft service which is consumed simultaneously with production. It also shows that regional gross domestic production is important factor for the pattern of trades in services.
This study attempted to examine whether the spread of infectious diseases and quarantine measures such as border blockade and restrictions on movement due to the global spread of the COVID-19 pandemic is the cause of a decrease in product trade. To this end, a gravity model analysis was conducted using commodity trade statistics from Korea and major trading partners. As a result of the analysis, it was empirically confirmed that in 2020, the time of the spread of COVID-19, the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic was an obstacle to reducing Korea's trade. However, in the case of 2021, it was not possible to confirm whether the impact of the pandemic had a significant effect on commodity trade. As the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021 is different, the commodity trade situation in 2022 when the COVID-19 epidemic is stably managed is also likely to change. Since factors such as response to COVID-19 and the spread of vaccines vary from country to country, it is thought that such various factors should be fully considered in the process of establishing policies to end the COVID-19 era
The South Korean government announced its plan to pursue membership in the CPTPP in 2022, aiming to establish a stable supply chain within the Asia-Pacific region. The CPTPP, led by Japan, was ratified in 2018 by 11 countries with the goal of eliminating tariffs and establishing new trade rules. According to our analysis, since the implementation of the CPTPP, there has been a trade promotion effect among Japan and member countries, with greater effects observed in countries with higher GDP per capita and closer geographical distance. As long as tariff elimination and reduction proceed as planned, the trade promotion effects are expected to expand gradually. However, the expansion of trade between Japan and CPTPP member countries may also indicate a relative contraction in trade with non-member countries, potentially posing a threat to the stable supply chain in the Korean industry within the Asia-Pacific region. As Japan is Korea's fourth-largest trading partner, it is necessary to carefully consider the impact of CPTPP on Japan's future trade with member countries and engage in discussions regarding Korea's participation and negotiation content based on a thorough examination of the matter.
This study examined the trade of the Central Asian CIS countries and the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region. These countries are rich in resources such as oil, natural gas and aluminum. These countries were switched to capitalist market economy after independence from the Soviet Union. So, these countries are considered as new emerging markets. This study analyzed the current status of trade between Daegu-Gyeongbuk region and Central Asian CIS countries. The result of analysis of the trade structure between the Daegu-Gyeongbuk and Central Asian CIS countries, and of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region exports to Central Asian CIS countries showed insufficience when compared with the total export of korea. In this study, we used the gravity model to analyze the trade volume of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region and Central Asian CIS countries. The result of analysis is that the globalization of Central Asian CIS countries appeared to be effective in increasing trade. In order to increase trade, Korea and CIS countries should strengthen their economic cooperation. Especially, these countries should try to implement FTAs for economic integration. The Central Asian CIS countries have an industrial structure that relies on resource exports. So, they have a blueprint for diversification of industries through national long-term plans. The Daegu-Gyeongbuk region's economy has been going through long-term stagnation. If the Daegu-Gyeongbuk companies can enter the Central Asian CIS countries, it can be a solution for the local economy.
The geologic structure of Gongju Basin, which is a Cretaceous sedimentary basin located on the boundary of Gyeonggi Massif and Ogcheon Belt, is modeled by using gravity data and interpreted in relation with basin forming tectonism. The electrical survey with dipole-dipole array was also conducted to uncover the development of fractures in the two fault zones which form the boundaries of the basin. In the process of gravity data reduction, the terrain correction was performed by using the conic prism model, which showed better results specially for topography having a steep slope. The gravity model of the geologic structure of Gongju basin is obtained by forward modeling based on the surface geology and density inversion. It reveals that the width of the basin at its central part is about $4{\cal}km$ and about $2.5{\cal}km$ at the southern part. The depth of crystalline basement beneath sedimentary rocks of the basin is about $700{\~}400{\cal}m$ below the sea level and it is thinner in the center than in margin. The fault of the southeastern boundary appears more clearly than that of the northwestern boundary, and its fracture zone may extended to the depth of more than $1{\cal}km$. Therefore, it is thought that the tectonic movement along the fault in the southeastern boundary was much stronger. These results coincide with the appearance of broad low resistivity anomaly at the southeastern boundary of the basin in the resistivity section. The fracture zones having low density are also recognized inside the basin from the gravity model. The swelling feature of basement and the fractures in sedimentary rocks of the basin suggest that the compressional tectonic stress had also involved after the deposition of the Cretaceous sediments.
The paper investigates the relation between importer's environmental regulation level and export of Korea by using the gravity model. We used the trade data of OECD for the year 2001 and environmental regulation indices of WEF. The main results of these empirical analysis are as follows. First, the influence of environmental regulation on export of whole industries have a significant result. Second, this effects matters at the industry level, too. But, the effects of the environmental regulation depends on the industries.
