This study investigated the feasibility of enhanced electrokinetic (EK) remediation of soil contaminated with approximately 20000 Pb-mg/kg. Enhanced EK remediation was evaluated by using mixed solution (0.3 M acetic acid and 0.03 M EDTA, EK-M) and by exchanging electrodes for preventing precipitation of metal hydrate. For the EK-M, the lead removal efficiency was only 2% lower than the case where 0.03 M EDTA was solely used (EK-Blank, EK-B). Considering the costly expense of EDTA, the application of EK-M would be economically viable. The efficiency of of EK-E was higher by 2% than the EK-B method. More impertantly, the pH values of entire soil packed column presented to be neutral (7~8) in the EK-E process. Unlike to EK-B and EK-M, the deposition of heavy metals to any specific area was avoided in the EK-E process.

Populus euramericana and Betula platyphylla var. japonica have been identified as possible species for use for phytoremediation of landfills. To identify the capacity of waste leachate absorption in Populus euramericana and Betula platyphylla var, japonica, four different treatments were applied to these seedlings: leachate solution (100% leachate), 50% dilution (50% leachate: 50% water, v/v) and 25% dilution (25% leachate: 75% water, v/v) were applied to these two species. After the experiment, concentrations of heavy metals in tree biomass were analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma emission spectrometer (ICP). These two species can take up the hazardous parts of the leachate such as heavy metals. Especially, these species showed good absorption capacity of Al, Cr, and Fe elements. The result of this study suggested that these two species can take up the toxic materials through their roots and transport them to stems or leaves.

Recently photochemical smog has become a serious urban air pollution. And VOC is the major pollutant for it. With the advance of industrialization and urbanization, MSWI fly ash and sewage sludge and melting slag were generated. It is necessary to de-toxificate ashes, because they contain many toxic constituents and probably lead to contaminate the environment. The objective of this research was to prepare multi-functional brick which is able to remove VOCs in ambient air. The bricks were made of MSWI fly ash, sewage sludge and slag. The benzene adsorption experiment by brick was acted to evaluate its adsorptivity. And also photocatalyst material was coated to enhance its adsorptivity and the endurance on the brick. According to the result, the benzene showed 74~96%. The removal efficiency was increased and the breakpoint time was lengthened by coating a brick.

This study was performed under four operational conditions for nitrogen removal in metal finishing wastewater. The conditions include electrode gap, reducing agent, the recycling of treated wastewater in 1st step and the simultaneous treatment of nitrate and other materials. Result showed that the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ was highest at the electrode gap of 10 mm. As the electrode gap was shorter than 10 mm, the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ decreased due to increasing in concentration polarization on electrode. And, in case that the electrode gap was longer than 10 mm, the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ increased with an increase in energy consumption. Because hydrogen ions are consumed when nitrate is reduced, reducing reaction of nitrate was effected more in acid solution. As 1.2 excess amount of zinc was injected, the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ increased due to increasing in amount of reaction with nitrate. As the effluent from 1st step in the reactor was recycled into the 1st step, the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ increased. Because the zinc were detached from the cathode and concentration-polarization was decreased due to formation of turbulence in the reactor. The presence of $NH_4{^+}-N$ did not affect the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ but the addition of heavy metal decreased the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$. As chlorine is enough in wastewater, the simultaneous treatment of nitrate and ammonia nitrogen may be possible. The problem that heavy metal decrease the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ may be solved by increasing current density or using front step of electrochemical process for heavy metal removal.
This study was carried out to find heavy metal contents in soil and in native plant in the regions near by zinc-mines, located at the Chilgok and Uljin Gun in Kyeongpook area. In the heavy metal contents during the to growth of native plants, Cd was contained in the order perennial > biennial > annual plant, but Cu was annual > perennial > biennial plant, and there was no difference in Zn contents. The native plants contained heavy metal highest were Osmunda japonica in Cd, Persicaria thunbergii H.G in Cu and Equisetum arvense L. in Zn. Cd was contained highest in Pteridaceae, Cu in Equisetaceae and Zn in Polygonaceae. In the heavy metal contents by the part of plant of Equisetum arvense L. and Erigeron canadensis, Cd and Zn were much contained in the order leaf > stem > root, but Cu was in the order root > leaf > stem. The average contents of Cd, Cu, Zn in soil were 1.27ppm. 12.04ppm. 64.28ppm in Chilgok, and 3.30ppm. 72.93ppm. 194.04ppm in Uljin respectively. There were positive correlations between Cd contents of heavy metals(Cd, Cu, Zn) in soil and in native plant, but not significant. It was estimated that Osmunda japonica, Pteridium aquilinum (KUHN) var and Equisetum arvense L. which most absorbed heavy metal have effect of exclusion of heavy metals near by zine-mines region.
The study is to determine the feasibility of activated red mud as an anti-red tide material. The red mud, a byproduct of Bayer process for the production of alumina from bauxite, contained hematite, boehmite, calcite, sodalite, quartz, zircon, anatase and an unknown phase. In the adsorption study of the red mud, its adsorption efficiencies for heavy elements were close to $100\%$ except $92\%$ In As. These results seem to be attributed by the high adsorption ability of iron oxides for heavy elements. As a result of leaching tests with the red mud at various pHs (pH $1\∼13$), the high leaching efficiencies for As, Cu and Zn at low pHs (at acidic condition) were obtained. It indicated that removal efficiency of heavy elements could be excellent in acidic treatment of red mud. The activated red mud, red mud reacted with acid, contained hematite, boehmite and so on, and desorption of heavy metals from the activated red mud increased with increasing temperature. The grain of the activated red mud was tens nm in size. The removal efficiency for 5 types of plankton was generally in inverse proportion to pH, especially to final pH. Of five plankton types, Prorocentrum minimum and Alexandrium tamarense promptly were removed more than $90\%$ as soon as the activated red mud was sprayed and $100\%$ after 30 minutes. These results indicated that the activated red mud seems to be a promising anti-red tide material.
Heavy metal removal by Z. ramigera 115 and soluble slime polymer producing mutant Z. ramigera 115SLR was investigated. Both strains showed similar tolerance against $Cd^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$ and $Fe^{2+}$. When cells were cultivated in the presence of 500 ppm $Cd^{2+}$, the mutant strain removed 1.5 fold more metal than the wild type did at same biomass. Metal adsorption capacities were in the order of Z. ramigera l15SLR polymer > Z. ramigera 115 polymer > Z. ramigera 115 cell >Z. ramigera l15SLR cell. The optimum pH for metal adsorption was 7.5. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms indicated that Qmax and 1/n of Z. ramigera l15SLR polymer were 164.2 mg $Cd^{2+}$/g dw and 0.496, respectively. These results showed that the polymer of Z. ramigera l15SLR could be used as an effective metal adsorbate.
In this study, the rhizoremediation of petroleum and heavy metal-contaminated soil was characterized employing Zea mays and two plant-growth promoting rhizobacteria, Gordonia sp. S2RP-17 and Serratia sp. SY5 which have petroleum-degrading activity and heavy metal-resistance, respectively. After 51 days, the average dry weights of Zea mays' root without and with the inoculation of rhizobacteria were $1.9{\pm}0.2$ and $5.6{\pm}0.7\;g$, respectively. Compared with initial TPH concentration in soil ($21,576{\pm}3,426\;mg-TPH{\cdot}kg-dry\;soil^{-1}$), the residual TPH concentrations were $220{\pm}98\;mg-TPH{\cdot}kg-dry\;soil^{-1}$ in soil planted with Zea mays, and $20{\pm}41\;mg-TPH{\cdot}kg-dry\;soil^{-1}$ in soil planted with Zea mays and inoculated with rhizobacteria. These results indicated that the inoculation of S2RP-17 and SY5 could promote TPH removability in soil as well as the growth of Zea mays' root. There was little positive effect of the rhizobacteria inoculation on the removability of heavy metal such as Cu, Cd and Pb in soil planted with Zea mays.
In remediation of the contaminated soil, it requires to select at least more than two remediation technologies depending on the fate and transport phenomena through complicated reactions in soil matrix. Therefore, methodologies related to develop the integrated remediation technology were reviewed for agricultural soils contaminated with heavy metals. Pneumatic fracturing is necessary to implement deficiency because soil washing is not effective to remove heavy metals in the subsurface soil. But it needs to evaluate the characteristics such as essential data and factors of designated technology in order to effectively apply them in the site. In the remediation site, the important soil physical and chemical factors to be considered are hydrology, porosity, soil texture and structure, types and concentrations of the contaminants, and fate and its transport properties. However, the integrated technology can be restrictive by advective flux in the area which remediation is highly effective although both soil washing and pneumatic fracturing were applied simultaneously in the site. Therefore, we need to understand flow pathways of the target contaminants in the subsurface soils, that includes kinetic desorption and flux, predictive simulation modeling, and complicated reaction in heterogenous soil.
