This study was carried out to investigate variation of heavy metal contents for feed materials during composting and to evaluate the effect of pre-treatment methods on heavy metal analysis. Dry ashing, $HNO_3-HClO_4$, aqua-regia, HCl reflux, $HNO_3-HClO_4-HF$, autoclaving methods of $HNO_3$, HCl, and $HNO_3(2+1)$ were used as pre-treatment for heavy metal analysis. In analyzing standard material SRM 2781, recovery efficiencies of pre-treatment methods were 50-60% for Cr and Zn, >100% for Ni, and 80-90% for Cd and Cu. Recovery efficiency of dry ashing for SRM 2781 was the lowest. In composting raw material, Cd concentration by autoclaving methods was 3 to 4 times higher than the other methods and recovery efficiency of dry ashing was also the lowest. During composting, Cd content was the highest in autoclaving. Cr and Cu concentrations were the lowest in dry ashing and aqua-regia, respectively. Variation coefficients of Pb and Zn between pre-treatment methods were generally low.

This study carried out a human risk assessment of Cu, Pb, Zn and Ni contained in soil contaminated by improperly buried heavy metal wastes in railway sites. The purpose of the human risk assessment is to derive the need for soil remediation and factors that should be considered during soil remediation. Risk assessment was performed in accordance with the Environment Ministry's Risk Assessment Guidelines. The results of the human risk assessment of contaminated heavy metal soil contaminated by improperly buried waste in the railway site were presented after the process of determining exposure concentration, calculating exposure, and determining carcinogenic hazards. The heavy metal content of soil is 621.3 Cu mg/kg, 2,824.5 Pb mg/kg, 1,559.1 Zn mg/kg and 45 Ni mg/kg, which is the exposure concentration of the target contaminant. The results of human exposure according to exposure pathways were high in the order of soil outdoor dust >soil ingestion >soil contact, and Pb >Zn >Cu >Ni were higher in order of contaminant. The carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks of soil contaminated with heavy metal waste were higher than the allowable carcinogenic risks (TCR> $10^{-6}$) and the risk index (Hi < 1.0) suggested by USEPA. Therefore, the site needs to be remediated.

For treating tannery wastewater containing high sulfate and heavy metals, test was performed to assess their performance, competition between SRB (sulfate reducing bacteria) and MPB (methane producing bacteria), and the activity of MPB according to change of chromium concentrations. COD removal efficiency was above 70% at VLR (volumetric loading rate) of 2.0 gCOD/I.day and HRT (hydraulic retention time) of 18hrs at $35^{\circ}C$. In the competition between SRB and MPB, about 15% of the removed COD was utilized by SRB in the begining, but it became 43% at the end. It indicated that MPB was strongly suppressed by the occurrence of significant sulfate reduction since a large electron flow was uptaken by SRB. For the entire experiment, removal efficiencies of chromium concentration were more than 90%. Despite high removal efficiencies of chromium concentration, performance of reactor did not change significantly during the experimental periods. Expecially, chromium (III) is tannery wastewater is less toxic than chromium (VI).

There are approximately 500 abandoned mining sites in Korea. Abandoned mines cause various environmental and safety problems such as landscape damage, soil, groundwater and stream pollution by heavy metal, acid mine drainage and soil erosion. According to the survey, there are significant numbers of mines causing environmental problems in Korea. For a environmentally sound management of abandoned mines, the Soil Pollution Control Act should include the regulation concerning soil pollution and recovery standards of the abandoned mines. Also, comprehensive survey about abandoned mines, setting-up of tile recovery priority, finance for clean-up are necessary.

This study was performed to prove that vitrified slag can be utilized as sound absorbing materials by investigating on heavy metal elution and the properties of sound absorbing rate according to the thickness. The heavy metal elution experiment indicated that heavy metal was not eluted since it was fixed stable in the slag. Vitrified slag generally exhibited a maximum sound absorbing rate around at 600Hz-1kHz and 3kHz in the low and high frequency range, respectively. On the other hand, the absorbing rate increased beyond the range of 7kHz again. The sound absorbing rate varied a little according to the thickness of the material. However, Vitrified slag is likely to the effective as a sound absorbing wall material since it has a sound absorbing rate clover 80% in the low and high frequency region when used as a wall. The results obtained in this study showed that vitrified slag has the recyclable material properties and therefore, highly applicable to sound absorbing materials.

A study on the removal of heavy metals using sawdust was performed. Among heavy metals such as lead, copper and cadmium ions, uptake capacity of lead ions was the highest as about 0.22 mmol/g-dry mass at pH 4. The surface condition and existence of lead ions onto the sawdust was confirmed by the FT-IR, SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), and EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray) instrumental analyses. When 0.5g of sawdust was added to initial lead solution (100ppm) removal efficiency was approximately 90%. Isothermal adsorption curve for lead ions was described by the Langmuir model equation and experimental data well fitted to model equation. Most adsorption for lead ions was also completed within 60min and pH of lead solution from 5.8 to 4.5 decreased with time.

The purposes of this research were to evaluate the character of laboratory wastewater, and to examine the utilization of waste egg shells for neutralization and removal of heavy metals. Waste egg shells are excellent at neutralizing acidic wastewater, because they have alkaline minerals such as calcium. It must be seemed that removal rate of heavy metals were very influenced by adsobent dosage and adsorbate concentrations, because waste egg shells acted as precipitation and adsorption. If we reflected the adsorption capacity(k) and adsorption(1/n) of Freundlich isotherm, we couldn't consider waste egg shells as a good adsorbent. In view of these results, it showed that wastes containing the similar compositions as waste egg shells could utilize the neutralization, precipitation and adsorption of heavy metals in laboratory wastewater.

Effects of acid ($HNO_3$ and HCl) modification on the adsorption properties of Pb(II) and Cu(II) onto bamboo-based activated carbon (BAC) were investigated through a series of batch experiments. The carbon content increased and oxygen content decreased with acid treatment. $HNO_3$ induced carboxylic acids and hydroxyl functional groups while HCl added no functional group onto BAC. The pseudo-second order model better described the kinetics of Pb(II) and Cu(II) adsorption onto experimented adsorbents, indicating that the rate-limiting step of the heavy metal sorption is chemical sorption involving valency forces through sharing or exchange of electrons between the adsorbate and the adsorbent. The equilibrium sorption data followed both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The adsorption capacities of BAC were affected by the surface functional groups added by acid modification. The adsorption capacities were enhanced up to 36.0% and 27.3% for Pb(II) and Cu(II), respectively by the $HNO_3$ modification, however, negligibly affected by HCl.

This study was carried out to estimate the amount and the characteristics of sewage sludge disposed of in the Nanjido sludge landfill site. Boring test was conducted to estimated the landfill volume and to get sludge samples to be analyzed. Total analysis and leaching test were performed to find the characteristics of sewage sludge. The Nanjido sludge landfill site had the surface area of $50,000m^2$ and the average depth of 15m. The estimated sludge volume was 600,000ton. Sewage sludge in Nanjido sludge landfill site was very stable. Results of total analysis of heavy metals indicated that the sludge could be classified as a non-hazardous waste according to the California state regulation. The sludge also could be used as compost based on compost quality criteria of foreign countries. Results of Korea Extraction Procedure showed that sewage sludge in Nanjido sludge landfill site was not a hazardous waste.

In this study, the sewage sludge dryer is installed before and after dehydration of the sludge and aqueous phase composition, the heavy metal content, and measurement and analysis were investigated. The removal efficiency of water content of sewage sludge was about 95.7% in the sewage sludge dryer. The removal efficiency of water content for primary dryer was designed for 35% of primary drying, secondary drying to remove the water content to 10%, but as the measurement revealed that 20.8% of primary drying, the second dryer 3.3% a better effect to the actual operation respectively. Before the installation of the sewage sludge dryer, the content of heavy metal was as follows, Cu:352~614 ppm, Hg: 1.3~1.44ppm, Cd : 1.1~1.86ppm, Pb : 17.25~ 28.93 ppm, As : 1ppm. And after the installation of the sewage sludge dryer, the content of heavy metal changed to as follows, Cu : 340~350 ppm, Hg : 0 ppm, Cd : 0~0.021 ppm, Pb : 0 ppm, As : 0~0.043 ppm which is Also below the legal limits. Also, the sewage sludge dryer produce 1/4 of the sewage sludge into dried sludge.
