  • This study explores effective ways to improve the happiness of the primary caregiver of disabled children based on the comprehensively identification of their influencing factors. Based on the results of a comprehensive review of the relationship between the influencing factors, this study seeks to explore directions and policy alternatives that are effective in improving the happiness of the primary caregiver of disabled children. The effects of social support, parenting stress, family strength, and happiness were examined in this study using data collected from 430 primary caregivers of disabled children in three regions of Jeollabuk-do. The main findings of the analysis are as follows: First, it was discovered that social support has a direct effect on the happiness of the primary caregiver of disabled children, as well as an indirect effect via family strength. Second, the primary caregivers of disabled children's family strength was discovered to have a partial mediating effect on the relationship between social support and happiness. Convergence suggestions were presented based on the research findings to promote social support, family strength, and feelings of happiness for primary caregivers of children with disabilities.

  • The current study aimed to examine how the caregivers and speech language pathologists (SLPs) would perceive the important communication contexts for 3~6 year-old children in the script-based intervention. Analytic Hierarchy Process analyses were conducted for the obtained survey data from SLPs and caregivers. Results showed that caregivers perceived 'educational and social life' and SLPs perceived 'family life' as the most important contexts from among three high-level contexts. Within each high-level context, 'meal time' in 'family life', 'playing with friends' in 'educational and social life', and 'playground' in 'culture and leisure life' were the most important communication contexts. Also, from among 35 global priority rank, caregivers perceived 'playing with friends' while SLPs perceived 'meal time' as the most important contexts, and 'family life' was high priority among first five ranked context both in caregivers and SLPs. In caregiver groups by children's age, 3 year- and 6 year-caregiver groups perceived 'family life' and 4 year- and 5 year-caregiver groups perceived 'educational and social life' as the most important contexts. There were also slight differences between caregiver groups by age in the rank order of communication contexts across the high level contexts. These results suggest that SLPs may need to consider not only child's age and developmental level but also caregiver's demands in selecting the appropriate communication contexts when delivering the script-based speech language intervention.

  • The primary goal of the current study was to investigate the longitudinal relationship between household income, main caregiver depression, and youth aggression from the interactionist perspective. The data were derived by combining the 2006, 2009 and 2012 survey waves from the Korean Welfare Panel Study. This data set covered the full span of adolescence from elementary to high school. The study utilized 561 families as the final sample and conducted autoregressive cross-lagged analysis. As a result, the early income status, main caregiver depression and youth aggression were likely maintained over time. Second, the results provided support for a reciprocal relationship between income and main caregiver depression. On the other hand, the reciprocal relationship between main caregiver depression and youth aggression was not found in the current study. Finally, the mediating effect of main caregiver depression between income and youth aggression was not found in the present study. In conclusion, the results of this study support the interactionist model in that the association between family income and main caregiver depression involves reciprocity and mutual influence across time. These findings have major implications for policy and interventions in regards to low-income families.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the mutual relationship between parenting stress and children's problem behaviors among those participating in dream start services. In order to verify the effect of parental and child effects on child's problem behavior and parenting stress based on repeated measures from the first grade of elementary school to the third grade of elementary school among children participating in dream start services, autoregressive cross-lagged modeling was applied. As a result, the stability coefficient showed that the two variables were significantly stable for 3 years. In other words, the measurement was maintained at a similar level with time. The causal relationship between parents 'parenting stress and child' s problem behavior was generally explained by the parental effect. In other words, parental stress is related to the child's problem behavior. These results show that the economic stress of poverty increases parents' parenting stress, which can negatively affect the adaptive development of children in the process of raising children.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediating effect on intellectual wellness between the physical and emotional wellness of the caregivers of children with disabilities and to provide the relevant data necessary for the response of the caregivers of disabled children. The study subjects were 177 caregivers of children with disabilities, and data were collected from June 2019 to November 2019. Data analysis was performed using the PROCESS macro. Independent sample t-test and one-way batch analyses were conducted to analyze the general characteristics and variables of the collected data. Through this, Scheffé's post-test was performed for variables with statistically significant differences. The relationship between variables was analyzed by Pearson correlation and hierarchical multiple accounting analyses. The results of the study indicate that the physical and intellectual wellness of the main caregivers of children with disabilities provide a direct effect on their emotional wellness as well, and that intellectual wellness provides a mediating effect between physical wellness and emotional wellness. It was found that the influence of the physical environment of children with disabilities is also important, but emotional wellness can be improved only when the main caregivers are provided with an appropriate and sufficient intellectual education. Therefore, the expansion of various educational programs for the main caregivers of children with disabilities could contribute to the improvement of their own overall wellness.

  • The present study aimed to assess the perception of a child's primary caregiver on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of dental treatment under general anesthesia (GA) or intravenous sedation (IV-SED) in pediatric dental patients. Self-administered questionnaires were completed before dental treatment under GA or IV-SED by 52 primary caregivers of healthy pediatric patients (10 years old or younger), and 43 (84%) of these caregivers completed the same questionnaires within 6 months after treatment. The Korean version of Child Oral Health Impact Profile (COHIP) and the Family Impact Scale (FIS) were used to assess OHRQoL in the questionnaires. The scores of COHIP and FIS improved after dental treatment. Demographic variables such as gender did not affect the improvement of COHIP and FIS, and age did not affect that of COHIP. However, baseline FIS score of younger patients was better than that of older patients before dental treatment. Regardless of the treatment variables, all COHIP and FIS scores were improved after dental treatment. COHIP score improved more in cases with pulp treatments compared to those without the treatments. On the other hand, FIS score improved less in cases with posterior stainless steel crown restorations compared to those without them. Anterior esthetic restorations and anterior teeth extractions did not affect the degree of improvement. Based on the primary caregiver's perceptions, the OHRQoL of healthy pediatric patients was improved by dental treatment under GA or IV-SED.

  • This research studied the social-emotional competence of children whose primary caregiver was a single-mother or single-father alone compared with children living with a single-parent but the primary caregiver was a non-parent (e.g. a grandparent). Subjects were 208 children (105 boys, 103 girls) from 10 elementary schools in 3 metropolitan cities. Instruments were the Adaptive Behavior Checklist constructed by the researcher, Self-esteem Inventory (Kim, 1987) and Emotional Competence Scale (Kim, 1998). Results showed that children in single-mother families were more social-emotionally competent than children in single-father families. Children whose primary caregivers were non-parents had higher self-esteem than children whose primary caregivers were single parents alone. There were interaction effects of caregiver variables on children's peer relationships and awareness/expression of their own emotion.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to measure the parenting behavior of primary caregivers of children in early childhood. Methods: An instrument was developed according to Devellis's instrument development process. The participants in this study who completed the main survey were 370 mothers and grandmothers. The survey was conducted from June 1 to July 30, 2014, and collected data were analyzed using item analysis, half-split reliability and Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ coefficient, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, convergent validity. Results: The factor structure of the instrument showed the cumulative variance as 55.7% in the factor analysis. As a result of a confirmatory factor analysis, a four-factor structure was found to be appropriate, and the construct validity and convergent validity of the instrument were thereby confirmed. The finalized parenting behavior instrument consisted of 26 items and four independent factors: affectionate, laissez-faire, educational and impulsive. A five-point Likert scale was employed, and a higher score in a particular factor showed that most of the behaviors belonged to the factor. Conclusion: The instrument developed in this study was found to be reliable and valid, and can be used to develop parent-child relationship building.

  • This study was to establish a framework to provide the necessary caring knowledge in preparental period by analyzing the effects of an experience of being a child-care teacher in a field based on child-care knowledge from university. The data were collected from 5 in-depth interviews for 7 weeks from July to August, 2015. The results showed that mothers who used to be child-care teachers put conversation first in the child rearing process, made a room environment similar to the activity space in a kindergarten, and evaluated themselves as mothers with a burden that their children should be different from the others. This means that they perform child rearing in a positive way by re-creating their experience and knowing the child rearing process.
