The transition zone of the railway is the section which roadbed stiffness is suddenly varied like as tunnel-earthwork, bridge-earthwork and concrete track-ballasted track. There are about 450 tunnel-bridge transition sections on Kyungbu high-speed railway line. It is very important to pay careful attention to construction of these transition zones, in order to secure the train running safety. So, we developed a finite element model of the moving wheel loading to simulate the behavior of bridge-earthwork transitions in this paper. The most distinctive characteristics of the model proposed is to simulate the real wheel behavior on rail. And the main analysis object is to evaluate and compare the deformation characteristics of the transition zone according to the reinforcement methods and length of transition zone which is adopted to high-speed railway. Based on the analysis results, we assessed the effect of the reinforcements on the transition zone of high-speed railway.
In this study, the absorbing boundary condition was adopted to prevent elastic wave propagation due to abrupt load condition changes in moving force analysis. It was proven to be effective in reducing inappropriate noise components. Furthermore, to verify whether fixed point excitation in a laboratory test can simulate train movement effectively, the results of dynamic analysis for fixed point excitation and moving force conditions were analyzed. The dynamic stability of an asphalt track structure under a KTX train condition was also studied. Additionally, the dynamic safety of asphalt tracks was verified by comparing the results of a moving force analysis under a KTX train load and a quasi-static analysis under the design standard Korean train load.
Rail is the main track component, playing the most important role in safe railways. For the sake of safety, it is strictly required to secure reliability against fatigue and destruction of rail. In this paper, by field measurement on concrete track, it is confirmed that the rail surface roughness and rail bending stress are linearly correlated with each other; the bending stress of rail can be presented as a function of train speed, track support stiffness, and rail surface roughness. The fatigue life of rail can be estimated by deriving the S-N curve through the fatigue test.
In general, it is difficult to measure dynamic responses of a bridge with stepwise increasing speed of a train during commercial service on a high speed railroad. However, before opening the 2nd stage of the Gyeongbu high speed railroad, there was an opportunity for field tests and measurements of the bridge with stepwise increasing speed(from 170km/ h to 315km/h). The measured responses were compared with the results of a developed bridge/train interaction analysis. Although good agreement was found throughout almost the entire range of speeds, relatively large differences were found in the vicinity of the critical speed at which resonance behavior of the bridge occurs. To investigate the cause of this, reanalyses are performed with re-estimated damping ratios from field tests.
The rail fastening system, which provides a structural connection between the rail and the sleepers, is a main track component that plays an important role in retaining the rail gauge within acceptable tolerances, as well as in passing the train load to the roadbed through the sleepers. In this paper, a modal test was first performed to evaluate the dynamic characteristics (e.g., natural frequency) of the clips of the railway fastening system under the condition of rail corrugation in urban railway operation. The corrugation-induced passing frequency was then compared with the natural frequency of the clips to investigate any resonance effect during train passage. Furthermore, a field test under train passage was conducted to measure the accelerations on the rail and the rail fastening clips as well as the strains on the rail fastening clips in the rail corrugation condition. The field measurements indicated that the accelerations on the rail and the rail fastening clips have a close relationship with the rail corrugation, but they had a minimal effect on the strains of the rail fastening clips.
The transition is the zone where support stiffness suddenly increases in the railway industry. If the support stiffness increases, differential settlement will occur at the transition due to difference of stiffness, and the differential settlement causes problems for the train running safety and the roadbed that supports the track. In particular, a study on differential settlement at bridge-earthwork transition was only conducted to considering railway load in most cases. However, these studies have not taken account of earthquake despite earthquake has been occurred frequently in the recent, and it is necessary to consider earthquake. Therefore, in this study numerical analysis has been performed by changing the inclination of approach block, which determines the shape of the transition, and earthwork in order to verify the effect of the shape of the transition on the dynamic behavior at the bridge-earthwork transition. The result shows that the dynamic behavior at the bridge-earthwork transition was affected by the shape of transition.

Currently, large-scale, deep construction is being carried out adjacent to subway tracks in korea. when excavating adjacent to each other, it is very important to ensure the safety of earth retaining structures and underground structures. therefore, we are managing the safety of the subway by introducing an automated measurement system. deformation of the subway track during adjacent excavation may affect train running stability. this is a factor that can be linked to train derailments. however, current subway track safety evaluation using automated measurement systems relies only on the maximum value of measured data. therefore, a method to improve the usability of automated measurement system results is needed. in this study, we utilized a technique that can quantitatively evaluate the measurement results of a large amount of subway track deformation. a safety evaluation was conducted on subway track deformation due to adjacent excavation using a vast amount of data using probabilistic statistical analysis techniques.
Rail vibration in city zone is becoming a serious environmental problem. In order to make a reduction plan for rail vibration, the research was conducted in which many experiments to measure actual rail vibration along the railroad through the central Deajeon area. A digital vibration level meter was used to measure rail vibration. Vibration levels of Z-axis were measured at every second for the duration of the train passing. The measuring station was placed at every 5m for the distance of 55m. A total of 353 different sets of vibration level were obtained. The signals were processed to get $L_{10}$ value and analyzed in terms of distance, train velocity, and number of trains. As a result, it has been found that rail vibration exceed the allowable vibraton limit of 60 dB, at the point of 25 m far from the railroad center, which is regulated by the las of vibration and noise. Train velocity was found to affect a little for vibration level within the zone. It was also found that a trench installed along a railroad could reduce vibration level up to approximately 10 percent. A model test was conducted to investigate the influence of the location and size of trench, on the transfer of vibration. A heavy steel ball was used to generate vibrations. On the basis obtained from this study, it could be concluded that the application of distance-attenuation and the installment of a trench along railroad could be applied as a reduction plan for rail vibration. Because limitions might exist to depend on the effect of distance attenuation, trenchs excavated along a railroad might be suggested as the most efficient solution to reduce railroad vibration.

This paper presents the ERRI design diagrams of KTX and HEMU applicable to simply supported single span bridges, and analyzes the dynamic characteristics and design considerations of the bridges under KTX and HEMU using the diagrams. The design diagrams of KTX and HEMU are calculated for the bridges with 25m, 30m, 35m and 40m span lengths, which are widely used for simple bridge in Korea. From the design diagrams, the dynamic characteristics of the bridges with the selected span lengths are analyzed. In addition, the design consideration is discussed to satisfy the design requirement of acceleration. It is desirable for the bridge with 25m span length to avoid resonance both for KTX and HEMU. Since larger responses are expected for HEMU in the bridge with 30m span length, and for KTX in the bridge with 35m and 40m span length, the bridges should be planned to have enough mass satifying acceleration requirement at resonance, or to avoid the resonance.

So far today, there is a speed limit by the radius of curve based on operation regulation in domestic railway, however a study for the maximum running speed at the curved section without any derailment would be necessary. The two major factors related to the running safety of railway vehicle are classified as the railway vehicle condition and the track condition. In terms of the rail inclination among many other factors, the determination of rail inclination within the possible limit is necessary for the geometrical structure of the optimum track. The disregard of the geometrical parameter related to the rail inclination may cause a serious problem to the running safety of railway vehicle. This study is focusing on the analyzing of running safety regard to the change of rail inclination among the many other parameters to improve derailment safety, so that there is an affection analysis of the running safety regard to the change of rail inclination in the ideal and geometric track condition. Also There is an affection analysis of the running safety regard to the simultaneous change of rail inclination and the running speed at the curved section. According to analysis results of running safety, In case that the left and right rail inclination are 1/40, the running safety of this condition defined than other conditions. Also, the rail inclination of conventional lines is 1/40, Therefore, the railway vehicle passing through curve is safe when the railway vehicle runs in conventional lines.
