  • This study has developed the index for diagnosis on possibility that typhoons (TYs) affect Korea. This index is closely related to the strength of the western North Pacific high (WNPH), which is calculated as a difference in meridional wind between at the highest correlation area (around Korea) and at the lowest correlation area (sea southeast of Japan) through a correlation analysis between TC frequency that affects Korea and 500 hPa meridional wind. In low frequency years that selected from Korea affecting TC index, anomalous northeasterly is strengthened from Korea to the South China Sea because the center of anomalous anticyclonic circulation is located to northwest of Korea. Thus, TCs tend to move westward from the sea east of the Philippines to the mainland China. On the other hand, in high frequency years, anomalous southwesterly serves as steering flow that more TCs move toward Korea because the center of anomalous anticyclonic circulation is located to sea east of Japan. Consequently, this study suggests that if this index is calculated using real time 500 hPa meridional winds that forecasted by dynamic models during the movement of TCs, the possibility that TCs approach Korea can be diagnosed in real time.

  • We need to use the strength of each Species Distribution Model(SDM) because presence location data were only collected due to time and economic limitations in Korea. This study investigated and compared GAM(Generalized Additive Model) which is one of presence-absence models with Maxent(Maximum Entropy Model) which is one of presence only models according to location data(presence/absence data). The target species was Fisher(Martes pennanti) which is an endangered species in California, USA. We implemented environmental data such as topography, climate and vegetation, and applied models to sub-regions and study area. The results of this study were as follows. Firstly, GAM which used real presence and absence data was better than GAM which used pseudo-absence data and Maxent which used presence-only data. Secondly, Maxent was better than GAM when presence-only data were used. Lastly, each model which applied to different regions didn't predict other area well due to the difference of habitat environment and over-predicted outside of study area. We need to select an optimal model to predict a suitable habitat according to the type and distribution of location data.

  • To analysis effect of environment factors on productivity of sweet pepper according to greenhouse covering material (glass, plastic film), this was investigated. In glasshouse, outside light was positively correlated with yield as that $100MJ{\cdot}m^{-2}$ of outside light increased $300{\sim}500g{\cdot}m^{-2}$, also cumulative temperature was same tendency. On possibility of model development for yield estimate cumulative temperature was high than outside light. According to covering material, leaf photosynthesis, productivity per out-side light and term in glasshouse was more high 13%, 46%, and 47% compared with plastic film house, respectively. Result of analysis of effect of light, temperature, and $CO_2$ on yield, relative yield coefficient, yield increment coefficient, and yield reduction coefficient in glasshouse were more high 25%, 73%, and 34% compared with plastic film house, respectively. Hence, sweet pepper's growing in glasshouse compare with plastic film house had more productivity, but that had more sensitivity to charge of environment factors.

  • Ground reaction curve is a very important information for evaluating the side wall displacements and installation time of the tunnle support. The ground reaction curve can be estimated by analytical closed form solutions derived on the supposition of circular section and isotropic stress condition. The conditions of stress field and tunnel configurations, however, are quite different in practice. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the effects of stress anisotropy and tunnel configurations in order to use simply in practical design. This paper describes a study of influence factors in the ground reaction curve. In order to evaluate the applicability of analytical closed form solution in practical design, two sets of parametric studies were carried out by numerical analysis in elastic tunnel behaviour: one set of studies investigated the influence of the K and the other set investigated the influence of the tunnel configurations such as circular and horse-shoe shape. In the studies, K value varies between 0.5 and 3.0, initial ground vertical stress varies between 5~30MPa far each K values. The results indicated that the self-supportability of ground is larger in the ground having lower K value. However, it is suggested that the applicability of closed form solution may not be adequate to determine directly the installation time of the support and self-supportability of ground. It is necessary to consider stress anisotropy and tunnel configurations.

  • This study aimed to explore the effects of private tutoring expenses, parents' monitoring affection, their children's learning value and self-regulated learning abilities on middle-school boys' and girls' English Math academic achievement. The subjects were the 3rd middle-school 1,123 students taking the private tutoring of English and Math who participated in the Korea Child Youth Panel Surveys(KCYPS). The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, correlations and hierarchical regressions. The main results of this study were as follows. Firstly, regardless of middle-school students' sex, as monthly average private tutoring expenses were more, the levels of parents' monitoring, and their children's learning value self-regulated learning abilities were higher, so middle-school students' academic achievement was higher. Secondly, regardless of middle-school students' sex, their self-regulated learning abilities were the highest predictors of English Math achievement. Also, their learning value and parents' monitoring influenced middle-school boys' English Math achievement in order. On the other hand, monthly average private tutoring expenses influenced middle-school girls' English Math achievement. Furthermore there were no moderating effects of parents' monitoring affection, their children's learning value and self-regulated learning abilities between monthly average private tutoring expenses and middle-school boys' and girls' English Math achievement. Finally, based on the results, the importance of parents and Home Economics was suggested in attaining middle-school students' higher academic achievement. Especially, Home Economics can play an important role of enhancing middle-school students' self-regulated learning abilities and learning value necessary for middle-school students' higher academic achievement.

  • Disaggregation techniques are widely used to transform observed daily rainfall values into hourly ones, which serve as important inputs for flood forecasting purposes. However, an important limitation with most of the existing disaggregation techniques is that they treat the rainfall process as a realization of a stochastic process, thus raising questions on the lack of connection between the structure of the models on one hand and the underlying physics of the rainfall process on the other. The present study introduces a nonlinear deterministic (and specifically chaotic) framework to study the dynamic characteristics of rainfall distributions across different temporal scales (i.e. weights between scales), and thus the possibility of rainfall disaggregation. Rainfall data from the Seoul station (recorded by the Korea Meteorological Administration) are considered for the present investigation, and weights between only successively doubled resolutions (i.e., 24-hr to 12-hr, 12-hr to 6-hr, 6-hr to 3-hr) are analyzed. The correlation dimension method is employed to investigate the presence of chaotic behavior in the time series of weights, and a local approximation technique is employed for rainfall disaggregation. The results indicate the presence of chaotic behavior in the dynamics of weights between the successively doubled scales studied. The modeled (disaggregated) rainfall values are found to be in good agreement with the observed ones in their overall matching (e.g. correlation coefficient and low mean square error). While the general trend (rainfall amount and time of occurrence) is clearly captured, an underestimation of the maximum values are found.

  • A mathematical model was proposed to analyze the vibration of diaphragm, such as the contact lenses fitted on the eyes, being subjected to the external sinusoidal pressure. The model incorporates the differential equations and their numerical solution program, based on the wave equations. Turbo-C and graphic software, formulated to describe the dependence of the various parameters involved in the vibration. The model predicts the radial distribution of amplitude, frequency dependence of both average displacement amplitude and the power of diaphragm whose edge is being either simply supported or rigidly clamped in vibration. The effect of variables such as thickness, radius, damping coefficients on the vibration characteristics was illustrated by the computer simulation of the derived program. As the frequency of driving pressure increases above the certain value determined by the boundary conditions and parameters the wave shape or pattern changes from simple arc to belly or loops having double antinode. It seems that the effect of outer antinode progressively increases as the frequency increases. If this kind of phenomena occurs to the contact lens on the cornea in vivo, it may cause an abnormal correction power in the lenses or pull off the eye due the increased rise of outer part of the lens.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the risk factors for posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) and to evaluate the association between Epstein-Barr viral load and the development of PTLD in pediatric heart transplant recipients. Methods: We reviewed children aged <18 years who underwent heart transplantation and quantitative analysis of blood Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) viremia at our institute from January 2006 to March 2015. Clinical characteristics and EBV viral loads were compared according to the presence of PTLD. Results: Over 9 consecutive years, a total of 40 heart transplant recipients, were included. Among 28 children with available EBV viral load measurements, seven patients (25%) had EBV viremia only defined as at least one time of ${\geq}457copies/mL$. PTLD occurred in three recipients (7.5%) 4.3, 6.3, and 17.0 months after transplant and all PTLD cases had preceding EBV viremia. The median age at transplant was 5.3 years (range, 0.5 to 6.0 years) in the PTLD group, compared with 11.9 years (range, 0.3 to 17.8 years) in the non-PTLD group (P=0.021). The median values of the peak EBV levels in the PTLD group were 3,452,170 copies/mL (range, 46,750 to 7,622,910 copies/mL); the peak EBV levels in the non-PTLD group were 3,112 copies/mL (range, 2,250 to 103,000 copies/mL). Conclusions: Younger age at transplant and presence of EBV viremia were associated with the development of PTLD in pediatric heart transplant recipients. A prospective study will be required to determine the blood EBV load for predicting the development of PTLD in these patients.

  • Purpose : $Henoch-Sch\ddot{o}nlein$ Purpura(HSP) is a self-limited systemic small vessel vasculitis, however, renal involvement is considered to contribute to the outcome of this disease. Therefore, identifying the renal risk factors in HSP and prevention of renal involvement are important. The aim of this study is to investigate whether early steroid administration in HSP could reduce the rate of renal involvement. Methods : We retrospectively studied two hundred children with HSP. We had administrated steroids orally to resolve of severe abdominal pain, joint and scrotal symptoms. We analyzed the relationship between the steroid therapy to relieve systemic symptoms and the subsequent renal involvement in HSP. Results : There were no significant differences in the incidence and duration of renal involvement according to steroid administration and its duration. In HSP patients with renal manifestations, steroid administration group showed a tendency of hematuria and steroid non-administration group showed a tendency of proteinuria, however, we could not find statistically significant differences in each group. There was no significant difference in the duration of purpura presence according to steroid administration. However, persistent purpura increased the incidence and the duration of renal involvement. Conclusion : Early steroid administration did not reduce the risk of renal involvement, there-fore, steroid could not prevent delayed nephritis in children with HSP On the other side, Persistent Purpura, known to be not related to steroid therapy, was associated with renal involvement. We suggest that early steroid administration could not be useful in preventing the renal involvement in HSP. (J Korean Soc Pediatr Nephrol 2007;11:185-194)

  • Changes in the flavor of muskmelons stored at different temperatures were examined to judge aroma patterns during storage. A mass-spectrometry based electric nose was used to distinguish the subtle differences in the muskmelon's volatile compounds. The data were used for a discriminant function analysis (DFA), and then the partial least square algorithm was used for a quantitative analysis. Volatile components in the muskmelons increased with storage, and the first discriminant function score (DF1: $r^2$=99.88%, F=3072.5) moved from a positive position to a negative position as the storage period increased. The proper point of maturity was anticipated as the $28^{th}$ day at 0$^{\circ}C$, $21^{st}C$ day at 4 and 7$^{\circ}C$, and $14^{th}$ day at 10$^{\circ}C$. Also, using the DF1 score we could predict the general tendency (vitamin C, stem moisture, acidity) of the muskmelons. The electronic nose revealed that the major volatile compounds that changed during storage of the melons were ethyl ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, nonanol, dodecanoic acid, hexadecanoic acid and tricosane. The amount of volatile compounds detected increased during storage.
