Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the rate of breastfeeding and factors which affect late preterm infants' (LPIs) breastfeeding according to gestational age. Methods: Participants were LPIs of 34 weeks (n=70), 35 weeks (n=75), and 36 weeks (n=88). Data were collected from July to December, 2011 from four university hospitals in D city. Descriptive statistics and odds ratio were used to compare three groups. Results: The rate of breastfeeding at 1 week after LPIs' discharge was 32.9%, 37.3%, 23.9% at 34, 35 and 36 weeks, respectively. The tendency to breastfeed in LPIs of 34 weeks was lower for LPIs born by Cesarean-section, while it was higher for LPIs with a longer period of breastfeeding during hospitalization and higher body weight at the first day of feeding. The prevalence of breastfeeding in LPIs of 35 weeks and 36 weeks was higher for infants with a history of more frequent breastfeeding during hospitalization. Conclusion: The rate of breastfeeding in LPIs of 36 weeks was the lowest. This study suggests that nurses should give more customized education to mothers with LPIs of 36 weeks during their stay in hospitals.
The influence of stage of lactation on the moisture. total soilds, ash, calcium, phosphorus and Ca/P ratio of human milk was studied. A total number of 32 lactating mothers provided 101 samples collected at 4 consecutive stages of lactation : days o to 5 postpartum(colostrum); days 6 to 10 postpartum(transitional): days 25-35 postpartum(mature). and days 55-70 postpartum(mature). Moisture and total solids concentrations showed a little but significant difference at the 25-35 day stage as compared with those of colostrum and then remained stable, but ash levels decreased significantly with the elapse of lactation period. Calcium levels increased significantly from colostrum to transitional milk stage with a further less significant increase at mature stages. Between colostrum and transitional stages, phosphorus concentration showed a significant increase $(9.9\pm2.4$ vs $15.5\pm4.9$ mg/100 ml, p<0.001)but between the 25-35 day and the 55-70 day stage phosphorus values did not change significantly. Ca/P ratios for colostrum. transitional, the 25-35 day and the 55-70 day stages were 2.28, 1.76, 1.68 and 1.95, respectively. No significant relationship was found between ash. calcium, phosphorus or Ca/P ratio of milk and maternal parity. When modified milk formulas were reconstituted using the total solids of human mature milk as amount of the modified milk formula in 100 ml of infant feeding solution. ash, and Ca/P ratio were similar to those of human milk. However considerably higher concentrations of calcium and phosphorus exist in the reconstitution fluid than those observed in human milk.
The aim of this study was to assess the nutrient intakes from infant formula and supplemental foods of 246 healthy infants fed infant formula, aged from 5 to 18 months. Subjects were devided into two groups depending on supplemental food type for weaning, Domestic supplemental foods (mainly home-made, n = 129) and Delivery supplemental foods (mainly commercially-delivered, n = 117). Four subgroups were assigned to 5-6 months, 7-8 months, 9-11 months, and 12-18 months by ages, respectively. Dietary assessment was carried out using 24-hour-recall method. Formula intakes in the delivery group tended to decrease accordingly with the ages. However, in the domestic group, formula intakes up to 8 months were similar and decreased after 9 month. Energy, protein, calcium and iron intakes from infant formula and supplemental foods were assessed. Energy intake at 12-18 months were lower than the RDA in both groups. Daily intake of protein and calcium at all ages were much higher than the RDA in both groups. Therefore, protein and calcium overnutrition were elucidated. Especially, protein intake at 5-6 months, calcium intake at all ages from infant formula was higher than the RDA in both groups. Iron intake at 5-6 months from infant formula were higher than the RDA. Consequently, as for infant formula, it was suggested that not only formula intakes but also nutrient content in formula should be reconsidered. On the other hand, nutrient intakes from supplemental foods in the domestic group tended to be higher than that of the delivery group. Especially at 9-11 months, significant differences between the two groups were observed. This may be due to high dependency on commercial powdered baby food in the domestic group. This study revealed that daily nutrient intakes of formula-fed infants are desirable but nutrient intakes from infant formula are too high. Conclusively, this study suggests that as the age of infants increases, formula intakes should be controlled and various supplemental foods besides commercially powdered baby food should be appropriately provided.
Purpose: This study was done to investigate the types of breastfeeding visits by mothers twenty-four months after birth and to identify the factors that increased breast feeding rates. Methods: The subjects of this study totaled seven hundred and seventy-four mothers with infants aged 2 years or less who had visited national medical institutions including Sanhujori service facilities, breastfeeding care service facilities, and community health centers. Data was collected from June 22 to July 31, 2009. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, $x^2$ test, ANOVA with a post hoc Scheffe test, and multiple logistic regression. Results: Major findings of this study were significant differences of planned length of breastfeeding and breastfeeding self-efficacy in relation to the differing types of breast feeding community visits by mothers. In multivariate logistic regression, baby's age, exclusive breastfeeding at hospital, utilization of breastfeeding care service facility, planned length of breastfeeding, and breastfeeding self-efficacy were independent predictors of the feeding type. Conclusion: In order to increase breastfeeding rates, programs provided by public health care services and medical facilities should start education on breast feeding in the hospital before mothers are discharged and then continue through the use of Sanhujori service facilities and workplace at 3 month and 6 month postpartum.
Concentrations of 5 major minerals(Na, K, Ca, P, Mg) and 3 trace elements(Mn, Mo, Ni) were measured in human milk samples collected from 21 highly selected healty lactating women at 2-5 days and at 1, 2, 4, 6 and 12 weeks postpartum. Significant decrease in contents of the major minerals and trace elements were found with time postpartum. Sodium contents decreased from 293.01ug/N at 2-5 days to 194.27ug/N at 12 weeks. Potassium contents also decreased from 436.18ug/N in colostrum to 358.51ug/N in matured milk at 12 weeks. The Ca/P ratios of colostrum transitional and matured milk were 3.39, 281 and 2.45 respecti-vely. Mean manganese levels of colostrum and transitional were 0.024ug/N and those of matured milk were 0.014ug/N. Molybdenum concentrations in the breast-milk collected at 1, 2, 4 weeks were higher than those in the milk samples at 2-5 days and 12 weeks Nickel content of colostrum was 0.062ug/N and those of trnsitional matured milk were 0.22ug/N and 0.017ug/N, These determinations will provide the basic information on the variability of minerals and trace elements as lactation proceed and the comparison of the components between term and preterm milk.

Effect of the oil mixture on physical properties in soft capsule preparation with ginseng extract contained $36{\pm}1%$moisture content was investigated. The optimum condition was reached when it was emulsified for 5 minutes in $40^{\circ}C$ water bath at 10.000 r.p.m. by mixing with both palm shortening oil and corn oil in equal amount under agitation. Addible amount of ginseng extract was 50% for the total.
Purpose: This study was carried out to investigate the awareness of the weaning of food using questionnaires, and the relationship with the weight gain in young infants. Methods: From September 2005 to December 2005, we performed a survey on 141 guardians of young infants aged from 6 to 18 months, who visited the pediatric out-patient department at Dongguk University Medical Center. We calculated the total score for each responder from ten questions on the weaning of food and assessed the body weight percentile of each of the young infants. Results: The most commonly reported information source for weaning food was 'the friends around' by 62 respondents (44.0%); 54 (38.3%) responded that the definition of weaning food was the preparatory step before starting a solid diet. Most used a spoon (90.8%) to feed when weaning food with a thin gruel of rice (78.7%). The time for weaning of food was before breast or infant formula feeding (55.3%). Addition of cow's milk was around 12 months (77.3%). The mean score was 6.21; however this did not show a statistically significant correlation with weight gain in young infants. Conclusion: The overall awareness of weaning of food has improved; however, information from doctors has decreased. Although the relationship between the awareness of weaning of food and the growth of young infants was not statistically significant, further studies on weaning of food, with larger and controlled sample sizes may provide important information.
Lipie peroxide formation, antiperoxidative s system and body adaptability for handling lipid p peroxide were examined in the first and second g generations of rats fed fish oil. Mackerel oil(MO) was used and four other dietary oils and fat, i.e. soybean oil(SO), perilla oil(PO), rapeseed oil(RO) and beef tallow(BT) were also employed to compare the effect of fish oil. Synthetic diets containing these five dietary fats at the level of 1O%(w/w), were given to the correspondm ing groups of male and female rats weighing about 70 grams. After 34 days of feeding, male a and female rats were mated and their offsprings were raised throughout suckling (17, 26 days) and weanling (39 days) periods. Liver lipid perox xide level was highest in MO group of both first (mother rats after lactation) and second generat tions of 17 and 26 days old, but not of 39 days old. During suckling period, liver lipid peroxide level was well matched to total unsaturation of dietary fat. Brain lipid peroxide levels were not different among five groups. Liver $alpha$-tocopherol a and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels were lowest in MO fed first generation. In second generation, $alpha$-tocopherol level was also low in MO group, although the effect was less pronounc ced, but GSH level was not different from other groups. Oxidized glutathione (GSSG) level did not consistently vary by change in dietary fat. Glutathione peroxidase activity increased as young rats grew up to 39 days. Superoxide d dismutase activity change was insignificant by a age, but was shown as lowest in MO group. At the age of 26 and 39 days, liver glutatione peroxidase activity was increased as was level of lipid peroxide, suggesting that this is the one of the mechanisms responsible for body adaptab bility for protection against the accumulation of lipid peroxide.
This study evaluated the effect of the nutrition education about infant feeding on the change of mother's knowledge, attitude and practice of weaning. The subjects consisted of treatment group (n=54) and control group (n=34). The treatment group participated in 6 times nutrition education and 5 times surveys. Nutrition education for weaning of the treatment group improved nutrition knowledge, attitude and practice in infant feeding. Before education, mean scores of control group and treatment group were 7.3 and 7.5 respectively but there was no significant difference. Both group got low score in a statement about weaning period, but they got good score in a statement about weaning method. After education, treatment group got better score(9.1) than control group(8.3) significantly (p<0.05). Treatment group was more desirable than control group specially in a use of Sun-sik, sugar, salt and weaning food mixed with formula after education (p<0.05). Practice of spoon feeding was more frequent in treatment group after education, however, control group used sugar and commercial weaning food more frequently than treatment group(p<0.05). Intake frequency of cow's milk and cookies of infants at age 9-12 month in control group was higher than treatment groups(p<0.01). Thus the nutrition education to mother seems to be effective in achieving desirable dietary behavior of infants.
Dietary intakes of 57 college women were measured by 7-day weight food records(7WR) Nutrient intakes of 7WR were compared with results of using 1-day weighted food records(1WR) and 2-day weighed food records(2WR), 7WR were recorded for 7 consecutive days by subjects and its first two days were chosen to provide 1WR and 2WR Mean nutrient intakes of the group were not significantly different between 1WR or 2WRand 7WR. Within-person variations were found to be greater than between-person variations. The ratio of within- and between-person variability was lowest for the vitamin A and highest for the calcium. Data on 7WR were analyzed to estimate the number of recording days needed to ensure r$\geq$0.9 between observed and turn mean intakes. The 11 to 13 days needed for energy sugar protein and vitamin A and 20 days for calcium The results indicated that the number of days needed varied substantially among individuals for the same nutrient and within individuals for different nutrients.
