  • Thermo-fluid characteristics in coke oven, sintering machine and blast furnace in iron-making facility are key processes related to the quality and productivity of the pig iron. Solid material in the processes usually forms a bed in a gas flow. For simulation of the processes by mathematical model, the solid beds are idealized to be a continuum and a reacting solid flow in the gas flow. Governing equations in the form of partial differential equations for the solid material can be constructed based on this assumption. Iron ore sintering bed is simulated and limited amount of parametric study have been performed. The results have a good agreement with the experimental results or physical phenomena, which shows the validity and applicability of the model.

  • Current iron and steelmaking operation was re-evaluated on the basis of slag engineering technology to optimize slag operations. In blast furnace process, increase in the basicity of slags (C/S) could obtain progressed fluidity and hot metal quality. COREX process would be stabilized in view of slag fluidity and hot metal quality by reducing input content of $SiO_2$and $A1_2$$O_3$In STS-AOD process, addition of small amount of lime could improve refining capacity of the slag; also calcium aluminate flux could be taken into account as a potential substitute for fluorspar, without degradation of operation efficiency and steel quality.

  • The efficient steam drum should be required to reduce carbon oxide emissions and heat recovery in oxygen converter hood system. However, steam generation is limited to the time of the oxygen blowing period, which is intermittent or cyclical in operation of steel-making process. Thus, steam drum should be optimized for an effective steam generation during the oxygen blowing portion of the converter cycle. In this study, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model has been developed to describe the impacts of changing various operating conditions and geometric shape on thermo-fluid characteristics and performance of the steam drum. This model encompasses not only fluid flow and heat transfer but also evaporation and condensation at the interfacial surface in the steam drum by using VOF (Volume of Fluid) method. To validate the prediction performance of this model, comparison of the steam flow rate between numerical and experimental result has been performed, resulting in the accuracy of the relative error by less than 3.2%.

  • The hot stove system is a process that is continuously and constantly generating the hot combustion air required for the blast furnace. The hot stove process is considered as a main energy consumption process because it consumes about $20\%$ of the total energy in steel making works. So, many researchers have interested in the improvement of the heat efficiency of the hot stove to reduce the energy consumption. But they have difficulties in improving the heat efficiency of the hot stove because there is no precise information on heat transformation occurring during the heating period. In order to model the relationship between the operating conditions and heat efficiencies, we propose a neural network using feature extraction as one of experimental modeling methods. In order to show the performance of the model, we compare it with Partial Least Square (PLS) method. Both methods have similarities in using the dimension reduction technique. And then we present the simulation results on the prediction of the heat efficiency of the hot stove.
