Pythagolas rule was used for investigation of static contact angle in particular figures. Static contact angle measurement was important to evaluate the wettability between solid and liquid. Optimum measurement method and standardization of calculation for static contact angle were investigated for practical application. Optimum diameter of droplet for static contact angle measurement was confirmed as 1 mm. Contact angle measurement using Pythagolas rule was also used to calculate advancing, receding angle and wettability of different surface condition. At last, it was concluded that the Pythagolas rule method was more accurate than general lineation method for static contact angle measurement.
To analyze the interfacial property between the fiber and the matrix, work of adhesion was used generally that was calculated by surface energies. In this paper, it was determined what types of contact angle measurement methods were more accurate between static and dynamic contact angle measurements. 4 types of glass fiber and epoxy resin were used each other to measure the contact angle. The contact angle was measured using two types, static and dynamic contact angle methods, and work of adhesion, Wa was calculated to compare interfacial properties. The interfacial property was evaluated using microdroplet pull-out test. Generally, the interfacial property was proportional to work of adhesion. In the case of static contact angle, however, work of adhesion was not consistent with interfacial property. It is because that dynamic contact angle measurement comparing to static contact angle could delete the error due to microdroplet size to minimize the surface area as well as the meniscus measuring error.

Atmospheric pressure plasma treatment on carbon nanotube (CNT) surfaces was performed to modify reinforcement effect and interfacial adhesion of carbon fiber reinforced CNT-phenolic composites. The surface changes occurring on CNT treated with plasma were analyzed by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscope (FT-IR). The significant improvement of wettability on CNT was confirmed by static contact angle test after plasma treatment. Such plasma treatment resulted in a decrease in the advancing contact angle from $118^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$. The interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber and CNT-phenolic composites increased by plasma treatment based on apparent modulus test results during quasi-static tensile strength. Furthermore, the proposed database offers valuable knowledge for evaluating interfacial shear strength (IFSS).
In this study, the behavior of water droplets on a solid-infused surface was evaluated by quantifying a water droplet's contact angle, sliding angle, and terminal velocity. The contact angle hysteresis and sliding angle of water on the solid-infused surface were measured to be lower than those of the hydrophobic PTFE surface. It led to the enhancement of the initiation of the water droplet's movement. When the capillary number was lower than Ca < 0.004, the terminal velocity of the water droplet on the solid-infused surface was higher than the PTFE surface due to the low contact line resistance. However, the transition of the droplet morphology from a hemispherical shape to a streamlined teardrop shape beyond Ca > 0.004 lost the effect of reducing frictional resistance on the solid-infused surface.
Interfacial evaluation and hydrophobicity of Ni-nanopowder/epoxy composites were investigated for self-sensing and actuation. Contact resistance and resistivity were measured using gradient micro-specimens. The actuation of the composites in the electromagnetic field was studied with three wave functions, i.e., sine, triangle and square functions. Due tothe presence of hydrophobic domains on the heterogeneous surface, the static contact angle of Ni-nanopowder/epoxy nanocomposite wasabout $100^{\circ}$, which was rather lower than that for super-hydrophobicity. The dynamic contact angle showed the similar trend of static contact angle. Ni-nanopowder/epoxy composite was responded wellfor both self-sensing and actuation in electromagnetic field due to the intrinsic metal property of Ni-nanopowder. Displacement of the actuator of Ni-nanopowder/epoxy composite was evaluated to obtain the maximum and the optimum performance using laser displacement sensor as functions of the wave type, frequency, and voltage. Actuation of Ni-nanopowder/epoxy composites also increased as functions of applied frequency and voltage. Actuated strain increased more rapidly at sine wave with increasing voltage compared to those of triangle or rectangular waves.
This investigation was performed to collect fundamental informations concerning the behavior of glass solders on ceramic joining process. The wettability of glasses on two types of alumina was evaluated by sessile drop method. SiO$_2$-CaO-Al$_2$O$_3$system glasses were selected as solder glasses, and alumina that have different purities were used for substrate materials. It is indicated that contact angles of glasses on 99% purity of alumina substrate do not change as increasing time at elevated temperature, however the contact angles on the 92% purity of alumina substrate exhibit the strong time dependency. The time-dependent property on 92% alumina was due to the interlayer reactions occurred between the glass solder and impurities on the substrate.

Dispersion and electrical resistance (ER) properties of polyurethane (PU) type topcoat were evaluated using carbon nanotube (CNT) with different CNT weight fraction. CNT was dispersed in PU type topcoat using ultra sonication dispersion method. CNT/PU topcoat was coated on carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite (CFRC) surface using gravity feed spraying method. Static contact angles of CFRC and CNT/PU topcoat were performed using 4 types of solvents to calculate the work of adhesion between CNT/PU topcoat and CFRC surface. Surface resistance of CNT added PU topcoat was measured to determine CNT dispersion. Adhesion property between CNT/PU topcoat and CFRC was determined via cross hatch cutting test based on ASTM D3359. The optimized condition of CNT weight fraction was found.
