  • The purpose of this study is to identify the trends of emotion-related mathematics education research conducted in Korea so far, and compare them with those of international studies, and explore the desirable directions for future emotion-related mathematics education research. Emotion-related domestic research was collected from domestic academic journals, analyzed, and then it was used as data for international comparative study. The findings of the Eligio(2017) were used as counterpart research data. This study compares the number of publications, research subjects and research topics of domestic and international studies on emotion. Findings indicate that it has generally shown similar patterns to international research although it was difficult to determine the trends due to the lack of the number of domestic studies. The future directions of domestic mathematics education research on emotion were proposed as follows. Since it is difficult to collect reasonable and reliable data on pure emotion due to the nature of emotion in mathematics education research, it is suggested to introduce the concept of emotional intelligence, which is the combination of emotion and cognition. Also, it was recommended to utilize the concept of meta-emotion for future study on emotion-related research.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating effects of mothers' beliefs about emotional guidance on the relations between children's emotionality and parenting stress. The participants were 213 mothers of 3~5 year old children from early childhood educational institutions located in Gyeonggi province and Daejeon, Korea. Mothers completed questionnaires regarding children's emotionality, beliefs about emotional guidance and parenting stress. The main results of this study are as follows. First, children's gender, age and mothers' age was related to parenting stress. And maternal parenting stress was positively related to children's negative emotionality and mothers' beliefs that children learn emotion by themselves and negatively related to beliefs that parent should coach children's emotion. Also, the relations between negative emotionality of children and parenting stress were significantly moderated by mothers' beliefs about emotional guidance. That is, higher levels of children's negative emotionality predicted higher parenting stress especially for mothers who believe that children learn emotion by themselves. The findings of this study suggested the importance of mothers' emotion related beliefs to reduce parenting stress.

  • Behavioral studies of emotion recognition in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have yielded mixed results. Most of the studies focused on emotion recognition abilities with regard to ASD using stimuli with unisensory modality, making it difficult to determine difficulties in real life emotion perception in ASD. Herein, we review the recent behavioral and cognitive neuroscience studies on emotion recognition functions in ASD, including both unisensory and multisensory emotional information, to elucidate the possible difficulties in emotion recognition in ASD. In our study, we discovered that people with ASD have problems in the process of integrating emotional information during emotion recognition tasks. The following four points are discussed: (1) The restrictions of previous studies, (2) deficits in emotion recognition in ASD especially in recognizing multisensory information, (3) possible compensation mechanisms for emotion recognition in ASD, and (4) the possible roles of attention and language functions in emotion recognition in ASD. The compensatory mechanisms proposed herein for ASD with regard to emotion recognition abilities could contribute to a therapeutic approach for improving emotion recognition functions in ASD.

  • It is crucial to process not only social cognitive information but also various emotional information for appropriate social interaction in everyday life. The processing of emotions embedded in social stimuli is affected by various context and external factors and the features of their own. Emotion discrimination tasks using point-light biological motion were conducted in this study to understand the factors influencing emotion processing and their effects. A target biological motion with angry or happy emotion was presented in the first task in red, green, white, or yellow color. A white angry, happy, or neutral "cue" biological motion was displayed simultaneously. Participants judged the emotion of the target relative to the cue stimulus by comparing the target with the cue. The second task used only emotionally neutral stimuli to find effect by the color itself. The results indicated an association between the specific color of the target and emotion. Red facilitated processing anger, whereas green appeared to facilitate happy emotion. The discrimination accuracy was high when the emotions of the cue and the target were identical in general, but the combination of red color and anger yielded different results compared with the rest of the conditions. Some illusory emotional responses associated with the target colors were observed in the second task. We could observe the effects of external factors in this study, affecting the emotional processing using biological motion rather than conventional face stimuli. Possible follow-up studies and clinical research were discussed.

  • In this research, students majoring in public health were tested with their interpersonal and emotional intelligence and its impact on psychological well being, studied by identifying the factors to promote and foster the students' emotions. The survey was conducted from May 15, 2003 for two weeks using only students majoring in Public Health. Factor analysis, emotional intelligence, emotion regulation, self-emotional awareness, emotions, taking advantage of others and emotional awareness was divided into four sub-factors. Emotional regulation and emotional advantage and recognition had a positive impact on interpersonal relationships, psychological wellbeing and emotional self-awareness. Emotional impact showed a positive advantage. On emotional intelligence, interpersonal factors that influence others and emotional awareness was highest in the psychological process. Students improve their interpersonal relationships and promote a more psychological well being as the emotion of anger and ability to set goals and to motivate efforts to strengthen the emotional awareness is more important. College students studying in Department of Health Services, as well as medical professionals provide better health care services for the sake of happiness that can inspire a systematic program development and is considered to require constant attention.
