  • This experimental study presents the fatigue evaluation of a precast deck connected using Ultra-High Performance, Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC). Four types of two identical large-scale specimens were fabricated with simplified splice rebar details which had a short splice length of ten times rebar diameter. The flexural behavior of each type of specimens until failure was investigated and fatigue behavior of the same type of specimens was then evaluated using two-million cyclic loading. In the flexural tests, tensile rebars exhibited the deformation exceeding yielding strain but failure mode related to the splice details was not observed in spite of such a short splice length. In the fatigue tests, damage was not appreciably accumulated by the cyclic loading except initial flexural cracks and the stress variations in tensile rebars was less than the allowable stress range. These experimental results demonstrate that all types of specimens exhibited acceptable fatigue performance and indicate that enhanced mechanical properties of ultra-high performance material permits to use a simplified splice details along with short joint width.

  • Integral and rigid frame bridges have advantages in bridge maintenance and structural efficiency by eliminating expansion joints and bridge supports. However, the detail of typical girder-abutment connection is rather complex and increases construction cost depending on construction detail. For the purpose of compensating disadvantages such as complexity and additional cost, a new type of bridge is proposed in this study, which improves the efficiency of construction by simplifying the construction detail of girder-abutment connection. The proposed bridge has the connection detail of steel girder and abutment integrated by prestressed PS bar installed in the connection. In this study, finite element analysis and fatigue load test are conducted to evaluate the fatigue capacity of the proposed girder-abutment connection. The results of the finite element analysis revealed that the possibility of the fatigue damage in the girder-abutment connection is very low. The results of the fatigue load test verified that the integrity of the girder and abutment connection is maintained after 2,000,000 cycles of fatigue loading.

  • In the 1994 Northridge earthquake, connection damage initiated from the beam bottom flange was prevalent. The presence of a concrete slab and resulting composite action was speculated as one of the critical causes of the prevalent bottom flange fracture. In this study, four seismic retrofit schemes are proposed in order to salvage welded steel moment connections with composite floor slabs in existing steel moment frames. Because top flange modification of existing beams is not feasible due to the presence of a concrete floor slab, three schemes of bottom flange modification by using welded triangular or straight haunches or RBS(reduced beam section), and beam web strengthening by attaching heavy shear tab were cyclically tested and analyzed. Test results of this study show that haunch and web-strengthened specimens can eliminate the detrimental effect caused by composite action and ensure excellent connection plastic rotation exceeding 5% rad. Design recommendations for each retrofit scheme together with supplemental numerical studies are also presented.

  • In this paper, the quantitative damage index for reinforced concrete (RC) columns with non-seismic details were presented. They are necessary to carry out the postearthquake safety evaluation of RC buildings under 5 stories without seismic details. The static cyclic test of the RC frame sub-assemblage that was an one span and actual-sized was first conducted. The specimen collapsed by the shear failure after flexural yielding of a column, lots of cracks on the surfaces of columns and beam-column joints and the cover concrete splitting at the bottom of columns occurred. The damage levels of these kinds of columns with non-seismic details were classified to five based on the load-displacement relationship by the test result. The residual story drift ratios and crack widths were then adapted as the quantitative index to evaluate the damage limit states because those values were comparatively easy to measure right after earthquakes. The highest one among the residual story drift ratios under the similar maximum story drift ratio decided on the residual story drift ratio of each damage limit state. On the other hand, the lowest and average ones among the respective residual shear and flexural widths under the similar maximum story drift ratio decided on the residual shear and flexural widths of each damage limit state, respectively. These values for each damage limit state resulted in being smaller than those by the international damage evaluation guidelines that are for seismically designed members under the same deformations.

  • The PCS system, which consists of precast concrete column and steel beam, is a kind of composite structural systems. In this paper, experimental study has been conducted to analyze seismic performance of bolted beam-to-column connections for the PCS system. Based on experimental results from the seismic testing of eight interior PCS specimens, it shows that behavior of PCS system is satisfactory to seismic performance criteria of ACI such as strength deterioration, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation capacity except initial stiffness. All of the specimens maintain their strength at large levels of story drift without significant loss of stiffness and show high ductility level for inelastic behavior. The energy dissipation capacity is two times greater than requirement of ACI criterion. But the initial stiffness of all specimens does not satisfy ACI criterion, and this phenomenon is similar to the other composite structural systems such as RCS, CFT system.

  • The mechanical reliability of flexible devices has become a major concern on their commercialization, where the importance of reliable bonding is highlighted. In terms of component materials' properties, it is important to consider thermal damage of polymer substrates that occupy large area of the flexible device. Therefore, room temperature bonding process is highly advantageous for implementing flexible device assemblies with mechanical reliability. Conventional epoxy resins for the bonding still require curing at high temperatures. Even after the curing procedure, the bonding joint loses flexibility and exhibits poor fatigue durability. To solve this problems, low-temperature and adhesive-free bonding are required. In this work, we develop a room temperature bonding process for polymer substrates using carbon nanotube heated by microwave irradiations. After depositing multiple-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) on PET polymer substrates, they are heated locally with by microwave while the entire bonding specimen maintains room temperature and the heating induces mechanical entanglement of CNT-PET. The room temperature bonding was conducted for a PET/CNT/PET specimen at 600 watt of microwave power for 10 seconds. Thickness of the CNT bonding joint was very thin that it obtains flexibility as well. In order to evaluate the mechanical reliability of the joint specimen, we performed lap shear test, three-point bending test, and dynamic bending test, and confirmed excellent joint strength, flexibility, and bending durability from each test.

  • We studied a bonding at low temperature using polymer bump and Non-Conductive Adhesive (NCA), and studied the reliability of the polymer bump/Al pad joints. The polymer bumps were formed on oxidized Si substrates by photolithography process, and the thin film metals were formed on the polymer bumps using DC magnetron sputtering. The substrate used was AL metallized glass. The polymer bump and Al metallized glass substrates were joined together at $80^{\circ}C$ under various pressure. Two NCAs were applied during joining. Thermal cycling test ($0^{\circ}C-55^{\circ}C$, cycle/30 min) was carried out up to 2000 cycles to evaluate the reliability of the joints. The bondability was evaluated by measuring the contact resistance of the joints through the four point probe method, and the joints were observed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The contact resistance of the joints was $70-90m{\Omega}$ before the reliability test. The joints of the polymer bump/Al pad were damaged by NCA filler particles under pressure above 200 MPa. After reliability test, some joints were electrically failed since thinner metal layers deposited at the edge of bumps were disconnected.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior of RC bridge piers and to provide the data for developing improved seismic design criteria. The accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process may be enhanced by the use of sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program. A computer program, named RCAHEST(reinforced concrete analysis in higher evaluation system technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. n boundary plane at which each member with different thickness is connected, local discontinuity in deformation due to the abrupt change in their stiffness can be taken into account by introducing interface element. The effect of number of load reversals with the same displacement amplitude has been also taken into account to model the reinforcing steel and concrete. In the companion paper, the proposed numerical method for seismic damage evaluation of RC bridge piers is verified by comparison with the reliable experimental results.

  • As the damage factors of the threestorey stone pagoda of the Bulguksa Temple in Gyeongju could cause a reduction in the historical and artistic value and accelerate the deterioration of the stone, an appropriate solution is needed. The aim of stone conservation is to conserve the original shape and convey originality from the ancestors to their descendants. This procedure includes a record of the condition, being available in the future. In particular, the damage assessment could be used in conservational research, educational data, conservational treatment, and preventive data. As a result of quantitative damage assessment, biological damage indicated 159 %, chemical damage 114 %, and physical damage 16 %. The west direction revealed 95 % because of the amount of sunshine, moisture, and expansion of rock. Complex factors and high range damage were observed on the foundation and body of the pagoda. Since the top of pagoda was restored in the 1970s, the state presented a good condition. By doing this, the number of organisms could be reduced by cleaning and the physical damage could be minimized by bonding. On the other hand, continuous monitoring will be needed because there is a possibility of reforming the damage in the future.
