  • Considered is non-symmetric contact traction induced by the tilting of a contact body and/or by a far field bulk tensile load to the other body. The problem is under the regime of plane strain. General profile of the contact end is incorporated and partial slip condition is supposed. As an example contact configuration, an indentation of a punch with rounded corners onto a half plane is studied. The variation of the internal stress field due to the tilting and the bulk tension is investigated. An edge crack problem is analyzed to examine the influence of the non-symmetric traction. It is shown that the tilting of a punch does not influence the behaviour of the crack. Rather, the effect of the bulk tension on the cracking behaviour is found considerable.

  • To restrain contact failure, present study investigates the influence of edge machining of an indenter (punch). As for the edge machining, rounding, chamfering, and chamfering and rounding are considered. Contact mechanics is consulted to examine the traction profile and the size of the contact region which are directly influenced by the end profile of the indenter. The effect of rounding size (i.e., radius) in the case of the chamfering and rounding edge-indenter is studied. Shear traction is also evaluated within the regime of partial slip. Size of slip region and its expansion rate due to the increase of shear force are considered to investigate the shape effect of the indenter on contact failure.

  • A new CVT, the inner spherical traction CVT (ISCVT) is introduced. Transmission of the most scooters is the self-controlled variable pulley-belt type of CVT having some disadvantages in the fuel consumption and the limitation of the transmittable power due to the slippage between the belt and pulley. Unlike this, ISCVT controlled directly by driver is more efficient and the contact mechanism having the same line of contact normal of the spherical rotors of different radii on common center causes that the power density and torque capacity are remarkably improved. The prototype with the specifications of 50cc scooter is designed and tested.

  • The normal and tangential belt forces for two types of flat belts are measured and compared. From friction theory, ti was assumed that tangential friction is proportional to the actual contact area $A_{a}$ and $A_{a}$ is proportional to normal pressure P; i.e., $A_{a}$ .var.P$^{n}$ . For a flat belt with cloth backing, the n=2/3 is obtained for the constant of belt surface model. For a flat belt with rubber backing, the n=0.9 to n=1.0 is suggested as a surface model constant. The theoretical equation developed in this paper showed agood with the experimental results.
