Subdomain-interface variational formulation is presented to solve a class of dynamic contact problems of composite structures. The penalty method is used for imposing inequality constraints on contact surfaces and for connecting finite element subdomains that satisfy interface compatibility conditions. As a result, any complex-shaped domain can be easily divided into independently modeled subdomains without considering the conformity of meshes on interfaces. Some advantageous features of the present method are shown through a set a numerical studies with a developed computer code.
Ammonia in water which is toxic to human, its concentration is regulated below 0.5 mg/L in drinking water. Current study aimed to develop appropriate models for ammonia stripping using hollow fiber membrane contactor. Two different models were developed during the study. Model 1 was assumed only free ammonia ($NH_3$) transfer in stripping process, whereas the Model 2 was assumed with total ammonia ($NH_3+{NH_4}^+$) transfer. Ammonium chloride ($NH_4CI$), sodium hydroxide(NaOH) were used to make ammonia solution, which was concentration of 25 mg as N/L at a pH of 10.5. The experimental conditions were such that, the liquid flow was in tube-side in upward direction and t he gas flow was on shell-side in downward direction a t room temperature. The experimental and modeling results showed that marginal difference were observed at low gas flux. However the difference between the both models and experimental value were increased when the gas flux was increased. The study concludes that the Model 1 with free ammonia is more appropriate when both models were compared and useful in ammonia stripping process at low gas flux.

The purpose of this research is to develop improved model for joints of tunnel based on Disturbed State Concept (DSC) model. DSC model is verified with respect to comprehensive laboratory tests performed by Schneider and back prediction results. Based on results of this research, it can be stated that DSC model is capable of characterizing the strain softening and dilative behavior of rough granite joints under four different constant normal stresses.

The objective of this paper is to suggest a nonlinear analysis process to predict the structural behavior and strength of composite basement wall member combined with H-Pile. Therefore, the structural behavior of composite basement wall is studied and the special nonlinear characteristics of each elements such as H-Pile, concrete wall, and shear connectors are idealized using ATENA program. Finally, the result is compared with previous test result. Research result shows that there is a good co-relation between analysis and test results even if analysis result has little bit higher initial stiffness than test result. It can be concluded that the nonlinear behavior of composite basement wall is suitably predicted by using the contact element model in ATENA program as shear connector element.

Linear roller bearing (LRB) is an important mechanical element that is widely used in precise positioning systems that are subjected to large loads. This paper presents a new model for estimating the displacement of an LRB subjected to external forces. For this purpose, assuming that the linear motion block (LM block) is rigid, the equilibrium conditions for the LRB were obtained by solving the equilibrium equations of the rollers and the rigid LM block using the iterative Newton-Raphson method. The contact loads between the rollers and raceways were determined considering the profiled rollers. Then, the structural deformations of the LM block, subjected to the contact loads from the rigid LM block model, were computed using a finite element model for the LM block. The displacements of the LRB were then determined by superposition of the rigid LM block displacements on the induced displacements due to the structural deformations of the LM block. The proposed method was verified through comparison with a program by the bearing manufacturer.

There has been global efforts to prevent the further spread of the COVID-19 and get society back to normal. 'Contact tracing' is a crucial way to detect the infected person. However the contact tracing makes another concern about the privacy violation of the personal data of infected people, released by governments. Therefore Google and Apple are announcing a joint effort to enable the use of Bluetooth technology to help governments and health agencies reduce the spread of the virus, with user privacy and security central to the design. However, in order to provide the improved tracing application, it is necessary to identify potential security threats and investigate vulnerabilities for systematically. In this paper, we provide security analysis of Privacy-Preserving COVID-19 Contact Tracing App with STRIDE and LINDDUN threat models. Based on the analysis, we propose to adopt a verifiable computation scheme, Zero-knowledge Succinctness Non-interactive Arguments of Knowledges (zkSNARKs) and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) to ensure both data integrity and privacy protection in a more practical way.
Rock physics serves as a useful tool for seismic reservoir characterization and monitoring by providing quantitative relationships between rock properties and seismic data. Rock physics models can predict effective moduli for reservoirs with different mineral components and pore fluids from well-log data. The distribution of reservoirs and fluids for the entire seismic volume can also be estimated from rock physics models. The first part of this report discusses the Voigt, Reuss, and Hashin-Shtrikman bounds for effective elastic moduli and the Gassmann fluid substitution. The second part reviews various contact models for moderate- to high-porosity sands. In the third part, constant-cement model, known to work well for the sand that gradually loses porosity with deteriorating sorting, was applied to the well-log data from an oil field in the North Sea. Lastly, the rock physics template constructed from the constant-cement model and the results from the prestack inversion of 2D seismic data were combined to predict the lithology and fluid types for the sand reservoir of this oil field.
Rolling noise is an important source of noise from railways; it is caused by wheel and rail vibrations induced by acoustic roughness at the wheel/rail contact. To reduce rolling noise, it is necessary to have a reliable prediction model that can be used to investigate the effects of various parameters related to the rolling noise. This paper deals with modeling rolling noise from wheel and rail vibrations. In this study, the track is modeled as a discretely supported beam by regarding concrete slab tracks, and the wheel vibration is simulated by using the finite element method. The vertical and lateral wheel/rail contact forces are modeled using the linearized Hertzian contact theory, and then the vibration responses of the wheel and rail are calculated to predict the radiated noise. To validate the proposed model, a field measurement was carried out for a test vehicle. It was found that the predicted result agrees well with the measured one, showing similar behavior in the frequency range between 200 and 4000 Hz where the rolling noise is prominent.
Distinct element method is a powerful numerical tool for modelling the jointed rock masses. It is also a useful tool for modelling of later stage of blasting requiring large displacement. The distinct element method utilizes a rigid block idea in which the interacting force between distinct elements is calculated from contact displacement as elements penetrate slightly. The properties of joints defined as the boundaries of distinct elements are critical parameters to determine the block behavior, and affect the deformation and failure mode. However, regardless of real joint properties, joint stiffnesses have sometimes been selected without special concern just to prevent elements from penetrating too far into each other in some quasi-static problems. Depending on whether the main interest in the analysis is the prediction of the deformation with high precision, or the prediction of the block behaviour after failure, the input data such as joint stiffness may or may not have a significant effect on the results. The purpose of this study is to provide a sound understanding of the effect of the joint stiffness on the distinct element analysis results, and to help guide the selection of input data.

In order to prevent and block infectious diseases caused by the recent COVID-19 pandemic, non-contact biometric information acquisition and analysis technology is attracting attention. The invasive and attached biometric information acquisition method accurately has the advantage of measuring biometric information, but has a risk of increasing contagious diseases due to the close contact. To solve these problems, the non-contact method of extracting biometric information such as human fingerprints, faces, iris, veins, voice, and signatures with automated devices is increasing in various industries as data processing speed increases and recognition accuracy increases. However, although the accuracy of the non-contact biometric data acquisition technology is improved, the non-contact method is greatly influenced by the surrounding environment of the object to be measured, which is resulting in distortion of measurement information and poor accuracy. In this paper, we propose a context-based bio-signal modeling technique for the interpretation of personalized information (image, signal, etc.) for bio-information analysis. Context-based biometric information modeling techniques present a model that considers contextual and user information in biometric information measurement in order to improve performance. The proposed model analyzes signal information based on the feature probability distribution through context-based signal analysis that can maximize the predicted value probability.
