  • As the customer's interest for sidewalk block in the street or apartment complex is increasing, the materials of block which had been a concrete block exclusively are varied to clay paver, native rock and wood etc. Especially, the sales volume of clay paver which is environment-friendly and ergonomic is dramatically increasing every year with two digits growth rate, however, many problems like "Edge Cracking" "Freezing Breakage" "Bending Breakage" "Joint Gap" are happening frequently within a couple of hours after installation due to the durabilities. Because of the characteristics of Ceramic products, clay pavers are very easy to be broken when they are bumped against each other. In addition, they are relatively fragile by a freezing expansion breakage when exposed to water due to hydrophilic property as well as the intensity and absorptance of the products are varied with small difference from the production process such as production equipment and process control. Therefore, it costs a lot of money to repair the breakdown unless production and installation is carried out according to the strict criteria of the quality control. In this study, the symptoms of breakdown frequently happened in clay paver are classified by each type and finally the solution for this problem in the production of brick, installation and criteria of quality control through compressive strength and absorptance test is suggested.

  • This study was conducted to search possibilities of the use of sludge from waterworks industry in the manufacturing of red clay bricks. Different compositions of the sludge were added into the raw materials of the bricks and required engineering characteristics of the manufactured bricks were examined. Compressive strength, plasticity, and surface absorption of the recycled bricks were analyzed and were compared with the bricks quality standard rules and regulation for quality assurance of the product. Compressive strength of the bricks made in a ratio 75% clay, 5% sludge and 20% silica was found 261.3 $kg_f/cm^3$ and that was comparable with first grade bricks standard. Compressive strength of the bricks made in a ratio 70% clay, 10% sludge, and 20% silica was found 249.9 $kg_f/cm^3$ while it was decreased to 217.3 $kg_f/cm^3$ when bricks were made in a ratio 65% clay, 15% sludge and 20% silica. However, these values of compressive strength were in agreement with the bricks quality standard. Surface absorption of the bricks made by the mixing of 20% silica with varying amount of sludge, i.e., 5%, 10%, and 20% was found 10%, 9.65% and 10.92% respectively. These values satisfied the quality standard of bricks of grade 1 and 2. Recycling of proper amount of sludge in bricks making could produce bricks of high engineering characteristics.

  • This paper aims to recycle red mud from a byproduct in the alumina industry as an alternative raw material for depleted natural resources. In order to apply red mud as a ceramic material, red mud ceramics were prepared according to mixing and temperature in a laboratory environment. Compared with KS L 4201 in terms of compression ratios and absorptions, it is found that two kinds of conditions for one type and three conditions for two types meet the standard. When red mud is used as a clay brick raw material, the substitution ratio of red mud is 10% or less, and the firing temperature is considered to be appropriate at $1200^{\circ}C$. In order to apply red mud to clay brick raw material in actual field, various samples and firing temperature should be considered in the future.

  • The carbon dioxide($CO_2$) emissions that result from construction are one of the main factors causing a global warming problem. It is therefore necessary to make efforts to reduce $CO_2$ emissions in the construction industry. Some researchers have studied $CO_2$ emissions in the industry ; however, there has been a lack of study on $CO_2$ emissions cost. Therefore, in this study, the construction costs, including the $CO_2$ emission cost, of masonry wall type, which is a common brick wall, concrete brick wall, and fired brick wall, were examined. The purpose of this study is to compare the construction costs of masonry wall types, including $CO_2$ emission costs. The study found that the $CO_2$ emission costs were highest for the fired brick wall, followed by the concrete brick wall. This research could provide basic information that can be used in other engineering methods to convert $CO_2$ emissions to $CO_2$ emission cost.

  • This study was conducted to recycle flotation tailings as non-sintered construction materials considering the economic and eco-friendly treatments. The particle size distribution( median $220\;{\mu}m$) of flotation tailings from Soon-shin mine was confirmed to be larger than that(median $140\;{\mu}m$) of tailings from Sam-kwang mine. Thus we investigated the properties of non-sintered eco-brick producted with the tailings from Sam-kwang mine and non-sintered water permeable block producted with the tailings from Soon-shin mine. Compressive strength of non-sintered water permeable block which was made with less than 25 wt% of tailings from Soon-shin mine was met with products class(over 14.70 MPa) of water permeable concrete(EL 245) from KEITL. Meanwhile, the coefficient of its permeability wasn't met with the products class( over $1.0{\times}10^{-2}\;cm/sec$). The properties of non-sintered eco-brick with less than 40 wt% of tailings from Sam-kwang mine were satisfied with third class in sintered clay brick products standard(KS L 4201). The non-sintered eco-brick as a result of leaching test on heavy metals by KSLT was verified to be environmentally stabile.
