  • The gridless (or meshfree) methods, such as MPS, SPH, FPM an so forth, are feasible and robust for the problems with moving boundary and/or complicated boundary shapes, because these methods do not need to generate a grid system. In this study, a gridless solver, which is based on the combination of moving least square interpolations on a cloud of points with point collocation for evaluating the derivatives of governing equations, is presented for two-dimensional unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes problem in the low Reynolds number. A MAC-type algorithm was adopted and the Poission equation for the pressure was solved by successively in the moving least square sense. Some weighing functions were tested in order to investigate the up-winding effect for the convection term. Some typical problems were solved by the presented solver for the validation and the results obtained were compared with analytic solutions and the numerical results by conventional CFD methods, such as FVM.

  • The compression molding is widely used in the automotive industry to produce products that are large, thin, lightweight and stiff. The molded product is formed by squeezing a fiber-reinforced plastic composites. During a molding process of fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites, control of filling patterns in mold, orientation and distribution of fibers are needed to predict the effects of molding parameters on the flow characteristics. It is the objective of this paper to develop an isothermal compression molding simulation that can handle both thin and thick charges and motion of the flow front, and can predict pressure distributions and accurate velocity gradients. The composites are treated as an incompressible Newtonian fluid. The effects of slip parameter $\alpha$ and extensional/shear viscosity ratio $\zeta$ on the mold filling parameters are also discussed.

  • In this study, blood flow in a carotid artery supplying blood to the human's brain has been numerically simulated to find out how the blood flow affects the genesis and the growth of atherosclerosis and arterial thrombosis. Velocity Profiles and hemodynamic parameters have been investigated for the carotid arteries with three different stenoses under physiological flow condition. Blood has been treated as Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid. To model the shear thinning properties of blood for non-Newtonian fluid, the Carreau-Yasuda model has been employed. The result shows that the wall shear stress(WSS) increases with the development of stenosis and that the wall shear stress in Newtonian fluid is highly evaluated compared with that in non-Newtonian Fluid. Oscillatory shear index has been employed to identify the time-averaged reattachment point and this point is located farther from the stenosis for Newtonian fluid than for non-Newtonian fluid The wall shear stress gradient(WSSG) along the wall has been estimated to be very high around the stenosis region when stenosis is developed much and the WSSG peak value of Newtonian fluid is higher than that of non-Newtonian fluid.

  • A parametric study has been accomplished to figure out the effects of the elliptic cylinder thickness, angle of attack, and Reynolds number on the lift and drag forces exerted on the elliptic cylinder. A two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes flow solver is developed using SIMPLER method to analyze the unsteady viscous flow over elliptic cylinder. Thickness-to-chord ratios of 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 elliptic cylinders are simulated at different Reynolds numbers of 400 and 600, and angles of attack of $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, and $30^{\circ}$. Through this study, it is observed that the elliptic cylinder thickness, angle of attack, and Reynolds number affect significantly not only the time-mean values and the amplitudes of the drag and lift forces but also the frequencies of the force oscillations.

  • In this paper, the submarine model, called DARPA SUBOFF model, has been numerically analyzed to investigate the aerodynamic forces variation in terms of angle of attacks and yaw angles. The SUBOFF model is consisted of the three parts : axisymmetric body, fairwater, and four symmetric stern appendages. Three dimensional unsteady incompressible Wavier-Stokes equation was used on curvilinear multi-block grid system. To validate the present code, the SUBOFF tare hull and an ellipsoid at angle of attacks of $10^{\circ}\;and\;30^{\circ}$ were simulated and a good agreement with experiments was obtained. After the code validation, the flows over SUBOFF model were simulated at three different angle of attacks and yaw angles. The variation of aerodynamic forces in terms of angle of attack and yaw angle were calculated. Also, to understand the flow features around a submarine with variation of yaw and attack angle, the pressure contours and streamlines were plotted.

  • Numerical computations are carried out to analyze characteristics of flow fields around an Wigley hull form which is advacing in the incoming waves. Navier-Stokes equations are solved by a finite difference method and a MAC method is used for coupling of pressure and velocity fields, and O-H grid topology is used.

  • Two-dimensional Stokes flow due to the line source and line sink of same strength in semi-infinite flow region with free surface is analysed using complex variable theory and conformal mapping. Surface tension effects are included while gravity is neglected. From the results of analysis, flow pattern and free surface shape are obtained and velocity distribution on the free surface is determined with 2 independent parameters Ca (capillary number) and h (non-dimensionalized distance between source and sink). When the location of the sink is above the source, velocity on the free surface converges and a cusp occurs on the free surface for the value of Ca above some critical capillary number.

  • Three-dimensional incompressible turbulent flow fields within the passage of the steam turbine nozzle with/without tip clearance have been simulated by solving the Navier-Stokes equations with SIMPLE scheme. The extended k-e model is applied to modeling the Reynolds stresses. Grids in the computational domain are generated by solving the Poisson's equations to improve the smoothness and orthogonality. Flow losses, secondary flow, velocity profiles, and deviation angles are obtained. The computated results without tip clearance show good agreement with the experimental data.

  • Two-dimensional Navier-Stokes code has been developed for analysis of turbomachinery blade rows and other internal flows. The Navier-Stokes equations are written in a Cartesian coordinate system, then mapped into a generalized body-fitted coordinate system. All direction of viscous terms are incorporated and turbulent effects are modeled using the Baldwin-Lomax algebraic model. Equation are discretized using finite difference method on the C-type grids and solved using implicit LU-ADI decomposition scheme. Calculations are made at a VKI turbine cascade flow in a transonic wind-tunnel and compared to experimental data. Present numerical scheme is shown to be in good agreement with the previous experimental results and simulates the two-dimensional viscous flow phenomena.

  • A numerical study of unsteady mixed convection in a cavity with high viscous fluid is presented. Finite volume method was employed for the discretization and PISO algorithm was used for calculating pressure term. The parameters governing the problem are the Rayleigh number ($10^3\;{\leq}\;Ra\;{\leq}\;10^5$), the Reynolds number (0 < Re $\leq$ 1), and the aspect ratio (0.5 $\leq$ AR $\leq$ 2). The fluid used is silicon oil, a high prandtl number fluid, Pr = 909.1. The results show velocity vectors and temperature distributions. It is found that the periodic flows in a cavity are observed at very low Reynolds numbers, and the period of periodic flow decreases with increasing Reynolds and Rayleigh numbers, and increases with increasing aspect ratio. Also, the Reynolds number range of periodic flow increases with increasing Rayleigh numbers and aspect ratio.
