  • The effect of delayed initial feeding (1, 3, 5, 7 days) and starvation on morphological change, mortality and cannibalism on larvae of Siniperca scherzeri was examined by laboratory rearing. The larvae of S. scherzeri began to feed on Artemia nauplii at 4 days after hatching. In case of unfed and 7-days delayed groups, all of the larvae died at 12 days after hatching. The larvae of 1 day delayed feeding survived and grew as almost same as the control group, and 3-days delayed groups showed $33\%$ survival rate at the end of experiment (12 days after hatching). In case of the unfed group, total length of the starved larvae showed lower growth rate than the control group, and they did not reached at the same size of the larvae of the control group. Cannibalism were more common in the unfed group and the delayed fed group than the control group. The highest rate of daily mortality caused by cannibalism in the delayed fed group was $23\%$ at 8 days after hatching.

  • The effects of starvation on the growth, survival and hepatocyte nuclear size of the just hatched grass puffer, Takifugu niphobles larvae were studied. The total length of the larvae showed increase up to 3 days after hatching (DAH), however, 3th to 6th DAH, the starved group grew, slower than the fed group, significantly. The body weight of the fed group grass puffer showed increase steadily during experimental period. The body weight of the starved group showed increase until 3th DAH, however, after 3th DAH the growth of body weight showed minute decrease. The survival of starved group decreased more significantly lower than that of the fed group and all the larvae died on the 6th DAH (p < 0.05). The nuclear area of the hepatocytes in the starved group were not significantly different from those of the hepatocyte nuclei in the fed group to 3th DAH, however, the starved group showed histological differences with smaller hepatocyte nuclear size compared with the fed group from the 4th to 6th DAH. Results form this study can be used as an indicator of the nutritional status of grass puffer larvae.

  • To minimize the damage caused by summer season such as high temperature and red tide, this study was conducted to investigate the effect of feeding and starvation on the survival rate, growth, growth restoration and physiological response of red seabream Pagrus major which were reared in marine net cage ($6m{\times}6m{\times}6m$). The feeding group was fed throughout the experiment for 10 weeks, whereas starvation group was not fed for 6 weeks and subsequent refeeding for 4 weeks. Survival rates of feeding and starvation groups were 94.4% and 98.1% respectively. The growth rate of starvation group was significantly lower than feeding group during starvation period, but recovered rapidly after feeding. The nutritional status such as albumin, total protein, total cholesterol, triglyceride also showed similar tendency to the growth data. Hematocrit and hemoglobin levels were higher in the feeding group than the starvation group during starvation period. Aspartate aminotransferase, glucose and total cholesterol were rapidly increased at the same time (in 5 week) in feeding group, whereas starvation group did not significant difference during starvation period. It was shown that the feeding group is more sensitive to stress than the starvation group. Thus, starvation can be applied as a rearing management plan of net cage fish farm in summer season.

  • In order to elucidate the effect of dietary n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3HUFA) on the changes of body weight and chemical compositions in the Korean rockfish during starvation, the fish were not fed for 9 weeks after fed different levels $(0\~1.5\%)$ of n-3 HUFA for 10 weeks. The higher level of n-3HUF A was contained in the diets, the slower body weight loss was resulted (P< 0.05). The decreasing rates of the body nutrients of the fish were significantly higher in the fish fed n-3HUF A deficient diets than those of the fish fed n-3 HUF A sufficient diets. Protein and lipid contents of the whole body were decreased with starvation whereas moisture content was increased. Decrease of lipid was mainly due to the decrease of nonpolar lipid. Amounts of polar lipid in the whole body were almost constant throughout the starvation, meaning not being affected by dietary n-3HUF A levels. Percentage of 22: 6n-3 was increased in the polar lipid fraction, but monoenic acids (16:1, 18:1), n-3 series (18:3, 18 4, 20:4) and n-6 series (20:2, 22:4, 22:5) were decreased with starvation. Fatty acid compositions of nonpolar lipid were not changed with starvation. These results suggest that all fatty acids of nonpolar lipid are equally utilized for energy during starvation.

  • The study was conducted to investigate the effects of practical variations in feed restriction, pre-slaughter handing and chilling regime on pork quality during ageing. A total of twenty male landraces were allocated into three treatments(i.e., pre-slaughter feeding, stress and chilling regime) in a factorial arrangement. pH, temperature, free calcium ions, WB-shear force, sarcomere length, cooking loss, drip loss and objective color were determined during rigor development and/or 1, 3, 7 d postmortem. Pre-slaughter chasing stress for approximately 15 min had no effects on pH/temperature profile and objective meat quality. There was an interaction(P < 0.05) between the fasting treatment and chi1ling regime for muscle temperature at pH 6.2. Sarcomere length indicated that the current experiment conditions did not induce muscle shortening, with 1.7 to 1.8 ${\mu}m$, in spite of a significant effect of the fasting treatment (P<0.01). Pigs fed until the morning of slaughter showed a low WB-shear force(P < 0.05) until 3 d at I "C. The treatment also resulted in a higher Hunter L* and a*(P < 0.05) at 24 h and 7 d. Fasted pigs showed a significantly(P < 0.05) reduced cooking loss. The current results indicated that feeding upon the morning of slaughter became detrimental on meat color and the negative effect on cooking loss were linearly elevated with increased ageing time. On the other hand, WB-shear force did not distinguishable after 3 d. Collectively, it appeared that feed restriction from a day before slaughter could produce more a desirable meat quality at the time of consuming. However, the limited effect of animal handling and chilling rate on meat quality is not necessarily to extend to that these do not affect pork quality, as that largely depends on experimental design.

  • Growth and activities of digestive enzymes in slime flounder (Microstomus achne) larvae were measured from hatching to near the end of larval development (day 58). Larvae reared under starved and fed conditions and the changes of acid phosphatase (ACPase) specific activity, alkaline phosphatase (ALPase) specific activity, trypsin-like enzyme activity and pepsin-like enzyme activity were described with growth and developmental stage of larvae. Total length of the starved larvae was gradually increased for 7 days post hatching and then almost unchanged. Total length of the fed larvae ranged from 5.13$\pm$0.178 mm at the day of hatching to 13.43$\pm$1.395 mm at 58 days after hatching. In starved group, dry body weight decreased from 0.l0$\pm$0.020 mg at the day of hatching to 0.05$\pm$0.012 mg at 12 days after hatching. Dry body weight of fed larvae decreased during the prelarva stage like starved group and then gradually increased. ACPase and ALPase specific activity in the starved larvae increased until all larvae died, however those activities in the fed larvae increased until 20 days and then decreased until 58 days after hatching, with no significant difference between groups. Trypsin-like enzyme activity in the starved larvae was unchanged until 3 days and then was the highest on 5 days after hatching, but not detected after completion of yolksac absorption. Those of fed larvae decreased until 3 days and sharply increased until completion of yolksac absorption. The highest trypsin-like enzyme activity in the fed group was observed at 20 days after hatching. Trypsin-like enzyme activity in the fed larvae was significantly higher than that in the starved larvae from 8 days after hatching. Pepsin-like enzyme activity was increased in 5 days after hatching in both groups. There was significant difference at 8 and 10 days after hatching between both groups. Based on above results, digestive enzyme activities were correspondingly changed to a growth and morphological transformation. Trypsin-like enzyme and pepsin-like enzyme activities are able to be a useful indices for health and growth status in larval slime flounder, because there was significant difference in digestive enzyme activities with developmental stages, growth or feed supply.

  • In order to minimize the damage on the red sea bream Pagrus major by a harmful dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides, we investigated the effect of feeding, starvation and stocking density on the survival rate, growth, growth restoration and physiological response of P. major exposure to C. polykrikoides. The experimental groups were divided into three groups such as F-HD (feeding and high density with $6.4kg/m^3$), S-HD (starvation and high density with $6.4kg/m^3$) and S-LD (starvation and low density with $3.2kg/m^3$) according to stocking density and starvation in marine cage ($11m{\times}11m{\times}5m$). The F-HD was fed throughout the experiment for 9 weeks, whereas S-HD and S-LD were not fed for 5 weeks and then refeeding for 4 weeks. Survival rate was the lowest in F-HD (85.5%) and S-LD was the highest (97.3%). The growth rates of S-HD and S-LD were significantly lower than F-HD during starvation period for 4 weeks, but rapidly recovered after feeding. The nutritional status such as ALB, TP, TCH, TG were similar to tendency of growth data. Ht, Hb, AST, ALT and GLU levels were significantly higher in the F-HD than in the starvation groups at the same time (in 3 week) during starvation period. But starvation groups did not differ during starvation period. As a result, F-HD is more sensitive to stress than S-HD and S-LD. Thus, during C. polykrikoides bloom period, starvation and stocking density control can help survival and growth restoration of the red sea bream.

  • The stuff was carried out in order to investigate the effect of level of feed input on AME (AME$\_$F/) and TME (AME$\_$FC/) values and of diet types of experiment on TME values of corn. yellow and soybean meal Experimental diet was fed as type of balanced diet instead of single ingredient at the level of 25. 50 and 75gm The results obtained were as follows : 1. The AME and AME$\_$F/ values of corn ana soybean meal were significantly different (P<.05) at each level of feed input. especially at 50gm feed input. the AME and AME$\_$F/ values of corn and soybean meal were the highest of all treatments and the AME of corn between 50gm and 75gm of feed input was not found significant difference(P>.05). 2. The TME and AME$\_$FC/ values of corn were not significantly different (P>.05) at each feed input but those of soybean meal differed greatly (P<.05) the fact that AME$\_$FC/ and TME values of soybean meal were the highest at 50gm of feed input was indicative that there were problems to measure AME$\_$FC/ and TME values of soybean meal. 3. There was not found significant difference (P>.05) according to the type of diet when fed single and balanced diet.

  • The effects of different dietary lipids on growth, body chemical composition, and nutrient partition of the Korean rockfish (43 g of initial mean weight) were studied. Fish were fed three experimental diets containing 1) $4.5\%$ squid liver oil, 2) $1\%$ squid liver oil and $3.5\%$ beef tallow, and 3) $1\%$ squid liver oil and $3.5\%$ soybean oil. Growth and feed efficiency were detarmined during a 19-week feeding period at water temperature of $15.5^{\circ}C$, and at the end of which body chemical compositions were analyzed. Remained fish were fasted for 45 days, and four fish were taken at 6, 12 and 24 hours, and 3, 15 and 45 days after the fasting to determine tissue compositions and hematological changes. Growth, feed efficiency, protein and lipid retention efficiency, hepatosomatic index(HSI), viscerosomatic index (VSI), and chemical composition of whole body and dorsal muscle were not affected by the different dietary lipids. Liver moisture content of fish fed squid liver oil diet was higher than that of fish fed beef tallow or soybean oil diet. Liver lipid content of fish fed beef tallow diet was higher than that of fish fed the other diets. Fatty acid composition of dorsal muscle and liver were affected by the different dietary lipids ; high levels of 20 : 5n-3 and 22 : 6n-3 from fish fed the diet containing squid liver oil, 18 : 1 from fish fed the diet containing beef tallow, and high 18 : 2n-6 and 18 : 3n-3 from fish fed the diet containing soybean oil were observed. Both HSI and VSI of fish fed three diets decreased with time after the begining of starvation. Liver glycogen did not change during the first 15 days of starvation and decreased thereafter, and that was not affected by the different dietary lipids. Lipid and protein contents in the dorsal muscle of fish decreased up to 15 days of starvation and remained unchanged thereafter, these were not different from each other. Glucose, free fatty acid, triglyceride and phospholipid concentrations in Fish serum were varied for the first 15 days of starvation, after that the concentrations of fish serum remained relatively stable in all the treatment groups with prolonged starvation. The results indicate that Korean rockfish can utilize fish oil, animal fat or vegetable oil equally as energy source when n-3HUF A is adquate.

  • This work was conducted to evaluate the effects of induced-molting methods on visceral organs and blood stress indicators in laying hens. One hundred fifty of 63-wk-old White Leghorn hens, with over 85% of egg production and $1.7\;{\pm}0.4\;kg$ of average weight, were used in this study. Treatments were control (non-molt treatment), feeding molt treatment (FM), and starving molt treatment (SM). There were 5 replicates of 10 hens for each treatment. All treatment groups were fed basal diet (15% CP and 2,700 kal/kg of ME) for two weeks as adaptation period. Heart weights were 8.2, 7.9 and 7.5 g in control, FM and SM, respectively. Liver and oviduct weights were decreased in both molting treatments compared with control (P<0.05). Corticosterone (CS) concentrations were 4.48, 4.47 and $4.66\;{\mu}g/mL$ in control, FM and SM at 61 weeks, respectively, but increased to 7.32, 7.11 and $7.71\;{\mu}g/mL$ at 62 weeks, respectively (P<0.05). Heterophil to lymphocyte ratios were 0.27~0.29 in all groups at 61 weeks, but increased to 0.97~1.03 in SM at 62 weeks. Both CS concentrations and H:L ratios in SM were greater compared with those for the other groups. These results suggest that hens in feeding molting program in hens are less stressed than those in starving molting one.
