  • The purpose of this study is to observe and compare the dynamic change of artificially demineralized enamel by remineralization solutions of different degrees of saturation at pH 4.3. In this study, 30 enamel specimens were demineralized artificially by lactic acid buffered solution. Each of 10 specimens was immersed in pH 4.3 remineralization solution of three different degrees of saturation (0.22, 0.30, 0.35) for 10 days. After demineralization and remineralization, images were taken by a polarizing microscope (${\times}100$). The density of lesion were determined from images taken after demineralization and remineralization. During remineralization process, mineral deposition and mineral loss occurred at the same time. After remineralization, total mineral amount and width of surface lesion increased in all groups. The higher degree of saturation was, the more mineral deposition occurred in surface lesion and the amount of mineral deposition was not much in subsurface lesion. Total demineralized depth increased in all groups.

  • Recycling nutrient solutions in closed hydroponic production systems is usually accompanied by an imbalance of nutrient solutions when concentration is controlled according to electrical conductivity (EC) levels. This study investigated whether it was possible to automatically control the concentrations of five essential elements nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) using only N, K and Ca ion sensors. N, P, K, Ca, and Mg uptake was measured in the nutrient solution, and relationships between absorbed ions were analyzed through twice-repeated experiments in lettuce. Results confirmed that the pattern of $PO_4$ ion uptake was similar that of N, and the pattern of Mg ion uptake was similar that of Ca. $PO_4$ ion uptake was most highly correlated with N, and Mg was most highly correlated with Ca. Regression coefficients of N and $PO_4$ were significantly different at 1.04 and 0.55, respectively, but were similar between Ca and Mg at 0.35 and 0.40, respectively. Additional experiments were conducted to measure nutrient uptake in pak choi and rose plants, both to confirm the results from the first experiment in lettuce, and to assess possible application to other crops. Coefficients of determination both for N and $PO_4$, and Ca and Mg were considerably high ($R^2=0.86$) in cultured pak choi, and similar results were observed in cultured rose ($R^2=0.87$ and 0.73, respectively). Regression coefficients for cultured pak choi were 0.56 and 0.24, respectively, and for rose were 0.51 and 0.16, respectively. Although the results obtained for N and $PO_4$ were not consistent between the lettuce experiments, N and $PO_4$ have similar regression coefficients for all crops. No common coefficient was found between Ca and Mg.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the chemical properties of rainwater in Taean area. Rainwater was collected during seven months from April to October in 2000, and analyzed for its chemical composition. The pH of rainwater at April and May were higher than those from June to September. Occurrence rate of rain above pH 5.6 was 42.1%, which showed the highest ratio from rainwater samples during investigation periods. Those of pH $5.0{\sim}5.6$ and $4.5{\sim}5.0$ range were 21.1 and 31.6%, respectively. The major cation in rainwater were $Ca^{2+}$ and $NH_4\;^+$, and $SO_4\;^{2-}$ was more than 50% of total anion composition. Monthly variation of acidity neutralization capacity by $Ca^{2+}$ and $NH_4\;^+$ was decreased during rainy season. The $nss-SO_4\;^{2-}/NO_3\;^-$, ratio was 2.0 which means $SO_4\;^{2-}$ contributed to acidity of rainwater two times more than $NO_3\;^-$.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the chemical properties of rainwater in the Suwon area. Rainwater was collected from April to October in 1999 and 2000, and its chemical composition was analyzed. The pH of rainwater in April was higher than that of the months after June. Occurrence frequency of rain above pH 5.6 was 45.1%, which showed the highest ratio from rainwater samples during the investigation periods. Those of pH 5.0∼5.6 and 4.5∼4.9 range were 31.4 and 19.6%, respectively. The major cations in rainwater were $Ca^{2+}$ and N $H_{4}$$^{+}$, and S $O_{4}$$^{2-}$ made up more than 50% of total anion composition. Monthly variation of neutralization capacity of rainwater acidity by $Ca^{2+}$ and N $H_{4}$$^{+}$ decreased during the rainy season. The ratio of non-sea salt sulfate to nitrate (nss-S $O_{4}$$^{2-}$/N $O_{3}$$^{[-10]}$ ) was 2.1, which means anthropogenic S $O_{4}$$^{2-}$ contributed to acidity of rainwater two times more than N $O_{3}$$^{[-10]}$ . .

  • In order to know the electrochemical decomposition characteristics of ammonia to nitrogen, this work has studied several experimental variables on the electrolytic ammonia decomposition. The effects of pH and chloride ion at $IrO_2$, $RuO_2$, and Pt anodes on the electrolytic decomposition of ammonia were compared, and the existence of membrane equipped in the cell and the changes of the current density, the initial ammonia concentration and so on were investigated on the decomposition. The performances of the electrode were totally in order of $RuO_2{\approx}IrO_2>Pt$ in the both of acid and alkali conditions, and the ammonia decomposition was the highest at a current density of $80mA/cm^2$, over which it decreased, because the adsorption of ammonia on the electrode surface was hindered due to the evolution of oxygen. The ammonia decomposition increased with the concentration of chloride ion in the solution. However, the increase became much dull over 10 g/l of chloride ion. The $RuO_2$ electrode among the tested electrodes generated the most OH radicals which could oxidized the ammonium ion at pH 7.

  • A method to determin Fe(II) and Fe(III) ion in aqueous solution by chemiluminescence method using a stopped flow system has been studied. The method is based on the increased chemiluminescence intensity with the addition of Fe(III) ion to a solution of lucigenin and hydrogen peroxide. The effects of KOH concentration, flow rate of reagents, $H_2O_2$ concentration and citric acid concentration used for the masking of Fe(II) ion on the chemilu-minescence intensity have been investigated. The calibration curve for total Fe was linear over the range from 1.0${\times}$$10^{-6}$ M to 1.0${\times}$$10^{-4}$M, coefficient of correlation was 0.996 and the detection limit was 1.0${\times}$$10^{-7}$M under the optimal exper-imental conditions of 4.0 M, 2.0 M, 3.5 mL/min for the concentration of $H_2O_2,$ KOH and flow rate of reagents, respec-tively. The calibration curve for Fe(Ⅲ) was linear over the range from 1.0${\times}$$10^{-6}$M to 1.0${\times}10^{-4}$ M, the coefficient of correlation was 0.997 and the detection limit was 5.0${\times}$$10^{-7}$M under the optimal experimental conditions.

  • This study was conducted to find out the relationship between microflora in groundwater and its physico-chemical environmental factors at the 59 sites, where distributed at 3 cities and 18 counties in Jeonranam-Do, Korea. The average values of environmental factors were as followings; pH 6.9, temperature 20.1 $^{\circ}C$, dissolved oxygen 6.5 mg/1, the depth of wells 80.1 m, and nitrate 10.7 mg/1. The average value of microbial population size; Heterotrophic bacteria-NA (HPC-NA) and heterotrophic bacteria-YEPD (HPC-YEPD) were 1.4${\times}$10$^3$CFU/ml and 0.59${\times}$10$^3$ CFU/ml respectively HPC-YEPD numbers were 42.1% of HPC-YEPD. Coliform bacteria were detected at 16 sites, and its average numbers were 6.7 CFU/ml. General fungi were detected at 14 sites, and its had average numbers were 3.9 CFU/ml. The correlation coefficient was calculated value as relation index between the microbial population sizes and environmental factors in groundwater. In case of HPC-NA, the correlation coefficient value with dissolved oxygen was 0.087 But it showed negative correlation coefficient with other factors. In case of HPC-YEPD, the correlation coefficient value with pH, temperature and nitrate were 0.0957, 0.0019 and 0.0151 respectively. It was concluded that the population size of HPC-NA were influenced by the order of temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and the depth of wells and that HPC-YEPD were influenced by the order of pH, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, the depth of wells and temperature.

  • Biogeochemical characteristics involving redox processes in groundwater from a riverine alluvial aquifer was investigated using multi-level monitoring wells (up to 30m in depth). Anaerobic conditions were predominant and high Fe ($14{\sim}37mg/L$) and Mn ($1{\sim}4mg/L$) concentrations were observed at 10 to 20 m in depth. Below 20 m depth, dissolved sulfide was detected. Presumably, these high Fe and Mn concentrations were derived from the reduction of Fe- and Mn-oxides because dissolved oxygen and nitrate were nearly absent and Fe and Mn contents were considerable in the sediments. The depth range of high Mn concentration is wider than that of high Fe concentration. Dissolved organics may be derived from the upper layers. Sulfate reduction is more active than Fe and Mn reduction below 20 m in depth. Disparity of calculated redox potential from the various redox couples indicates that redox states are in disequilibrium condition in groundwater. Carbonate minerals such as siderite and rhodochrosite may control the dissolved concentrations of Fe(II) and Mn(II), and iron sulfide minerals control for Fe(II) where sulfide is detected because these minerals are near saturation from the calculation of solubility equilibria.
