<도서관문화> 4월호 특집란에서는 지난 몇 년간 도서관의 디지털화 과정에서 전자책 도서관 구축이 꾸준히 확산되고 있는 현 상황과 관련하여, '전자책'의 생산자, '전자책도서관'의 운영자와 이용자 등 각각의 입장을 통하여 '전자책' '전자책도서관'의 현황과 향후 과제를 알아보는 지면을 마련하였다. 현장 사서들에게 유용한 자료가 될 수 있기를 바라며, 편집실의 자문에 도움을 준 '북토피아'(www.booktopia.com)에 감사드린다.

The purposes of this study are to investigate the perception and satisfaction of parents about e-books and to suggest ways to improve library e-book services. A user survey of one hundred twenty parents is carried for library use, computer use, and e-book user / non user behavior, library e-book service evaluation, selection of children's e-books and so on. Based upon the results, proactive library e-book service promotion such as public relations and e-book user education, easy access to e-book collections, recognition of e-book services at libraries, positions for e-book librarians and their professional continuing education, and self-evaluation of library e-book services.

다소 먼 이야기이긴 하지만 1990년대에 전자책 시장이 형성되기 시작하면서 전자책이 단순히 책의 새로운 한 형태가 아니라 아날로그 도서의 대체재가 될 수 있다는 막연한 기대감은 당시 전자책에 대한 폭발적인 관심을 불러 일으켰다. 하지만 여러 가지 환경적인 조건과 콘텐츠 부재 등의 이유로 지대한 사회적 관심이 직접적인 전자책 산업의 발전으로 연결되지는 않았다. 최근 전자책 산업은 모바일 산업의 발전과 더불어 관련 하드웨어 및 소프트웨어의 지속적인 혁신으로 세계적인 시장이 급속도로 발전하고 있고, 이제 국내에서도 차츰 그 영향에 따라 전자책 산업이 활력을 되찾고 있는 모양새이다. 전자책 산업의 성장으로 영향을 받는 이해 관계자들은 저자와 출판사, 유통사 등 다양하게 존재하겠지만 도서관 또한 책을 둘러싼 구성원에서 빼놓을 수 없는 존재일 것이다. 본 고에서는 전자책의 발전 배경과 최근의 추세를 살펴보고, 도서관의 입장에서 전자책을 바라볼 때의 관점에 대해 개인적인 소고를 밝히고자 한다.

전자책은 장서 및 예산 규모면에서 이미 공공도서관의 중요한 서비스 영역으로 자리잡았으나 도입 방식 및 서비스 측면에서 아직 개선이 필요한 많은 과제들을 안고 있다. 본 연구에서는 도서관에서 전자책이 차지하는 규모를 살펴보고 국내외 전자책 구입 방식을 파악하여 향후 개선 방안을 모색해 보고자 하였다. 연구 결과 국외 도서관의 경우 상용전자책 구입시 도서관에서 전자책을 직접 보유하지 않는 ASP 임대 방식을 채택하는 사례가 높고, 도서관의 사명을 견지하며 다양한 방법들을 통해 개선점을 찾아나가고 있는 것을 알 수 있었다. 국내 도서관의 경우 전자책을 영구적으로 소유하는 방식을 따르고 있고, 카피수, 무상 유지보수 기간 등 기본적인 조건들이 기준이나 체계없이 독립적으로 적용되고 있어 개선이 요구된다고 할 수 있다.

This study aims to analyze the current status of e-book management and services in academic libraries and identify related issues in the provision of the services. To do that, it performed case studies with A and B university libraries. E-book usage statistics was collected from each library and interviews were conducted with librarians responsible for e-book management and services. The interviews included questions regarding obstacles to e-book management and services and current issues as well as budget and acquisition, access and catalogues, usage, and marketing for e-books. The results show that in both libraries, the usage of e-books is low compared with that of printed books and the usage of e-books has declined recently. This is because of lack of new books with shortage of budget. Also, the most important issue surrounding e-book services is academic library evaluation, enacted by Academic Library Promotion Act in 2015. This study discussed how the criteria for academic library evaluation influence the way the academic libraries acquire and manage e-books.

Electronic books offer various possibilities for expanding access as well as changing reading behavior in our life. However despite the considerable promise of e-book, e-book market was not vitalized than re expected. This study investigated the current e-book environment and suggest some guidelines for making e-books a viable part of libraries' collections and our reading life. Findings and issues about the status of the current e-book market and technologies, and some experience of libraries in the advanced countries give us a lesson for the Korean library societies.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the status of e-books usage in small university library and to suggest implications for e-book management policies. To do that, a survey was conducted with students in a local small university, and the valid responses of 259 people were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, the preference of paper books (71%) was higher than that of e-books (12%). However, satisfaction with e-books (45.6%) was higher than that of paper books (27.9%) if they had experience using e-books. In addition, satisfaction was highest when using e-books for general reading, and it was found that the use device preferred to use a tablet. Based on the results of this study, we proposed some suggestions; 1) establishment of e-books service policy and promotion plan, 2) use of e-books dedicated devices and development of user-friendly e-books using environment, 3) providing various topics of e-books, 4) formation of an association for joint use of e-books between small library universities.

The pandemic, which came unannounced, has caused people to feel the limitations of physical books and spaces, and discussions on library digital capabilities and sustainable library services are spreading. The e-book service of public libraries is at the stage of expanding to the autonomous district level and seeking to revitalize the service. In this study, a user satisfaction survey was conducted on the Gangdong district Library in Seoul to identify the current status of public library e-book services and suggest improvement measures. Based on the analysis results, improvement measures were derived in three aspects: expanding e-book content, strengthening user support services, and improving the e-book system management system.

The purposes of this study are to investigate the perception and use of e-books by librarians and children and to suggest important elements to improve e-book services at the children's libraries. User survey questionaries and interviews from fifty five librarians and thirty children were carried for the perceptions and the use of e-books at five children's libraries. Based upon the data analysis from two groups, three important elements for improving e-book services of the libraries were suggested as follows: providing enough e-book contents, facilities and spaces, developing e-book user education programs with proactive pubic relations, and providing professional continuing education programs regarding e-books to librarians.
