  • Both resonant column (RC) and torsional shear(TS) tests were performed at small to intermediate strain levels to investigate deformational characteristics of cohesive soils. The effects of variables such as strain amplitude, loading frequency, and number of loading cycles were studied. Plasticity index was found to be an important variables in evaluating these effects. Soils tested include undisturbed silts and clays and compacted subgrade soils. At small strains below the elastic threshold, shear modulus is independent of number of loading cycles and strain amplitude. Small strain material damping exists wi th ranges be tween 1.1% and 1.7% for 75 tests. The elastic threshold strain increases as confining pressure and plasticity index increases. Above the cyclic threshold strain, the modulus of cohesive soil decreases with increasing number of cycles while damping ratio is almost independent of number of load cycles. Moduli and damping ratios of cohesive soils obtanined by RC test are higher than those from 75 test because of the frequency effect. Shear modulus of cohesive soil increases linearly as a function of the logarithm of loading frequency.

  • The ordinary differential equations governing free vibrations of elastic horizontally curved beams are derived, in which the effect of shear deformation as well as the effects of vertical, rotatory and torsional inertias are included. Frequencies and mode shapes are computed numerically for parabolic curved beams with the hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped ends. Comparisons of natural frequencies between this study and ADINA are made to validate the theories and numerical methods developed herein. The lowest three natural frequency parameters are reported, with and without the effect of shear deformation, as functions of the three non-dimensional system parameters: the horizontal rise to span length ratio, the slenderness ratio and the stiffness parameter.

  • A modeling method for the modal analysis of a rotating cross-ply composite beam based on Timoshenko beam theory is presented. To analyze the composite beam exactly, the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia are included. Linear differential equations of motion are derived using the assumed mode method. For the modeling, hybrid deformation variables are employed and approximated to derive the equations of motion. The effects of the dimensionless angular velocity and the slenderness ratio parameter on the variations of modal characteristics are investigated

  • The differential equations governing free, in-plane vibrations of non-circular arches with non-uniform cross-section, including the effects of rotatory inertia, shear deformation and axial deformation, are derived and solved numerically to obtain frequencies. The lowest four natural frequencies are calculated for the prime parabolic arches with hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped, and clamped-clamped end constraints. Three general taper types for rectangular section are considered. A wide range of arch rise to span length ratios, slenderness ratios, and section ratios are considered. The agreement with results determined by means of a finite element method is good from an engineering viewpoint.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the free vibration of stepped noncircular arches. Taking into account the effects of axial deformation, rotatory inertia and shear deformation, the governing differential equations are solved numerically for the elliptic and sinusoidal geometries with hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped, and clamped-clamped end constraints. The lowest four natural frequencies are presented as functions of four non-dimensional system parameters: the arch rise to span length ratio, the slenderness ratio, the section ratio, and the discontinuous sector ratio.

  • This article analyzed the dynamic compaction incuced vibration of man made waste landfill. General dynamic properties and compaction-condition-related dynamic properties were analyzed. from the results, it was turned out that the shear modulus G=17496-58320 t/m2, dannpln ratio D=14~58%, dominant frequency f=6-14Hz. Also, it was turned out that the propagation velocitis of low amplitude shear wave and compressive wave were increased as the number of impact increased, the relation between peak particle velocity, and impact distance was wpp=5.08.[D/r E]-1.4, the peak particle velocity was high at the lower part of the waste fill layer and the range of dynamically improved area was about 6-10m.

  • In this paper, we study the bending and free vibration analysis of nano plate, using a nonlocal elasticity theory of Eringen with a third-order shear deformation theory. This theory has ability to capture the both small scale effects and quadratic variation of shear strain and consequently shear stress through the plate thickness. Analytical solutions of bending and vibration of a laminated composite nano plate are presented using this theory to illustrate the effect of nonlocal theory on deflection of the nano plates. The relations between nonlocal third-order and local theories are discussed by numerical results. Further, effects of (i) nonlocal parameters, (ii) laminate schemes, (iii) directions of the fiber angle and (iv) number of layers on nondimensional deflections are investigated. In order to validate the present solutions, the reference solutions are used and discussed. The results of anisotropic nano plates using the nonlocal theory may be the benchmark test for the bending analysis.
