The settlements by liquefaction seldom occur uniformly because of soil homogeneity, however differential settlements are major cause of the damages to structures. From the past researches, author paid attention to the fact that stress history during undrained cyclic shear process affects greatly on the volumetric strains of the post-liquefaction. Therefore, the effect of the residual shear strain in cyclic shear process was examined in this study. The experiment apparatus based on strain control with volumetric strain control device was used for the study to investigate the effect of the residual strain on the relationship between volumetric strain and effective stress of clean and granite sandy soil. It could be seen an insignificant difference in the volumetric strain after liquefaction under various residual shear strain conditions in the case of clean sand. On the other hand, in granite sandy soil, the volumetric strain after liquefaction was small when the lower level of the residual shear strain was applied. And, the residual shear strain during cyclic shear affected the shape of the relation curve between effective stress and volumetric strain as well.
The shear failure modes of FRP strengthened concrete beams are quite different to those of the beams strengthened with steel stirrups. When the beams are externally wrapped with FRP composites, many beams fail in shear due to concrete crushing before the FRP reaches its rupture strain. In order to predict the shear strength of such beams, the effective strain of the FRP must be blown. This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the performance of reinforced concrete beams externally wrapped with FRP composites and infernally reinforced with steel stirrups. The main parameters of the tests were FRP reinforcement ratio, the type of fiber material (carbon or glass) and configuration (continues sheets or strips). The experimentally observed effective strain of the FRP was compared with the strain calculated using a proposed method.

The bridge bearings are devices absorbing the displacements of the superstructure. KS F 4420 relative to the design of elastomeric bearings in Korea allows shear deformation up to 70% of total rubber height. For the elastomeric bearings to fulfill their shear function required in the design, the stability of allowable shear strain of elastomeric bearings relative to the shear failure should be guaranteed. Moreover considering the possibility that elastomeric bearings are applied to the seismic design together with isolation devices, elastomeric bearings is supposed to display higher shear performance. In this paper ultimate shear performance tests were performed. The measured ultimate shear strains were over 200%. Therefore an allowable shear strain provision becomes safe. But elastomeric bearings expected to show their performance in one united body reveled the separation of components near 200% shear strain. These separation in elastomeric bearing can cause unexpected impact or concentrated stress to bridge system considering to application of seismic design. Therefore provision relevant to separation problem is necessary.
Both resonant column (RC) and torsional shear(TS) tests were performed at small to intermediate strain levels to investigate deformational characteristics of cohesive soils. The effects of variables such as strain amplitude, loading frequency, and number of loading cycles were studied. Plasticity index was found to be an important variables in evaluating these effects. Soils tested include undisturbed silts and clays and compacted subgrade soils. At small strains below the elastic threshold, shear modulus is independent of number of loading cycles and strain amplitude. Small strain material damping exists wi th ranges be tween 1.1% and 1.7% for 75 tests. The elastic threshold strain increases as confining pressure and plasticity index increases. Above the cyclic threshold strain, the modulus of cohesive soil decreases with increasing number of cycles while damping ratio is almost independent of number of load cycles. Moduli and damping ratios of cohesive soils obtanined by RC test are higher than those from 75 test because of the frequency effect. Shear modulus of cohesive soil increases linearly as a function of the logarithm of loading frequency.
In order to evaluate the behavior of overall range from small strain to failure, the triaxial compression tests with LVDTs were performed for local displacement measurements. According to the result it was possible to evaluate the total range behavior from 0.001% to 10% and both secant moduli of undisturbed and disturbed weathered soils had a similar result in the small slain level. The normalized shear moduli$(G/G_{max})$ in the undrained triaxial compression tests were similar to those of resonant column tests but the maximum shear moduli$(G/G_{max})$ were strongly affected by the ratio of saturation. As a result of parametric study a constitutive model with anisotropic hardening could predict the behavior of total strain range.
Recently, testing equipment which can run resonant column test altogether with the torsional shear test at the very highly controlled condition was developed at the University of Texas at Austin(U.S.A). With this equipment, the effects of high amplitude pre-straining vibrations on the dynamic properties of clean sands were studied. Tests showed the following results. Low amplitude shear modulus was gradually increased with little void ratio change as the number of high amplitude vibration cycles increased. Variation of volumetric strain with confining pressure for the pre -strained specimen under vibration was smaller than that of fresh specimen. Also the slope of the diagram for shear modulus and confining pressure relationship of the prestrained specimen was smaller than that of fresh specimens. These results agreed well with the analytical results.
Shear characteristics of soils can be investigated using various types of shear stress measuring apparatus. Ring shear tests are often applied for examining the residual shear strength under the unlimited deformation. This paper presents drainage-consolidation-shear velocity dependent undrained shear strengths measured in terms of water leakage. A series of ring shear tests were performed under the constant normal stress (50 kPa) and controled shear velocity ranging from 0.01~1 mm/sec under the undrained condition. As a result, undrained shear strengths are dependent on shear velocity. It exhibits that straining hardening behavior is observed for the shear velocity lower than 0.1 mm/sec; however, the strain softening behavior is observed for the shear velocity higher than 0.1 mm/sec. Water leakage can cause the increase in shear stress irrespective of shear velocity. Shear stress increases with increasing amount of water leakage. It is due to the fact that the small grains and water flow out through the rubble edge in the ring shear box. Repetitive saturation and consolidation processes may minimize the error.

In simply supported concrete beams with concentrated load, there is arch action that the internal lever arm length varies through shear span. Recently shear analysis model considering this effect has been developed, but the analysis algorithm is so complicated. Moreover, the variation of internal lever arm length is not considered on the shear compatibility condition. In this study, the shear analysis model is developed more simply and the variation of internal lever arm length is considered on the shear compatibility condition. From these modifications, an actual shear behavior of RC beams subjected to concentrated load could be expected from the results of the proposed analysis model.
This paper presents on the shear behavior prediction of reinforced concrete beams using Transformation Angle Truss Model (TATM). The TATM can evaluate the stress-strain relationships for cracked concrete by transforming stresses and strains for principal plane into those over the crack surfaces. This proposed analytical method simplifies the Fixed Angle Softened Truss Model (FA-STM) and removes the limitation of applicability of the FA-STM. The shear.strength and strain of reinforced concrete beams are predicted by using the TATM. For the verification of proposed method, experimental results of reinforced concrete beams were compared with theoretical results by the TATM, FA-STM and Rotating Angle Softened Truss Model (RA-STM).
To simulate two-dimensional plane-strain conditions in the laboratory model test, the side frictional resistance between the soil and thick glass or plastic sheet of the soil container should be reduced as much as possible. However, in fact this side friction cannot be removed completely. In this paper, the ground model simulated as a multi-sized aluminium rod mixture was introduced to get rid of the side frictional resistance and applied to the laboratory shear box test. In addition, an application of the close range photogrammetric technique to the shear box test was validated. As a result, it was found that a mean value of dilation angle from the close range photogrammetry was close to the dilation angle defined by the curve of shear strain vs. volumetric strain.
