  • It is well-known that when single rock fractures undergo shear displacement, they are influenced by the boundary conditions and fracture roughness. In this case, aperture geometry will change by means of dilation due to the shear displacement. As fractures become the flow paths, fluid flow through rock fractures is affected by the void geometry. In this study, therefore, the influence of roughness on shear behavior of fractures has been investigated, and the resulting hydraulic behavior has been analyzed. In order for this study, a statistical method has been used to generate rough fractures, and they have been adopted into new conceptual models fur fracture shearing and flow calculations. The main contributions of this study are as follows: firstly, fracture shear behavior becomes less brittle with decreasing fracture roughness and increasing normal stress. Then, the characteristics of aperture distribution becomes those of roughness of fractures indicating its hydraulic significance. Finally, it is observed that with decreasing fracture roughness the breakdown of channel flow occurs more slowly.

  • This study investigates the horizontal shear behavior of an interface between precast concrete (PC) and topping concrete(RC), and evaluates the horizontal based on the investigations by the experimental. Horizontal shear strength in connected surface is determined by the roughness an interface and the shear reinforcement or not. In this study, the main experimental parameters are the shear reinforcement types in the shape of loop-type and lattice-type, rebar spacing. A total of four specimens were shear strength tested and manufactured. As a result, the horizontal shear strength of reinforced connected surface was found to be controlled by deformation in vertical direction. Comparison of reinforcement shape, the mean initial crack load loop type specimens, the average maximum load and the junction of the average in terms of initial stiffness, respectively 33.7%, 45.9% and 55.2% were large enough. Evaluation results for shear strength equation of existing standard domestic, the loop-type reinforced 2.32 to 4.23 times, lattice-type reinforced 1.65 to 3.06 times appears to be higher. Behavior of interface or strength of structural design criteria was fairly safe side. It does not have any problems in the applied field is considered.

  • Samples of Hangdeung granite and Berea sandstone containing sliding planes were prepared by saw-cutting and polishing using #100 or #600 grinding powders. Their basic friction angles were then measured directly in direct shear tests and triaxial compression tests, and also in tilt tests, which measure the angles indirectly. Although the angles measured by the direct methods were generally accurate, those measured along certain planes were greatly different from the others depending on the condition of the plane. The tilt tests yielded similar angles regardless of the sliding plane condition or the rock type; however, the error range was relatively wide. Sliding planes polished by the grinding powders yielded more accurate results than those cut by the saw and tested without polishing, as polishing ensured consistent conditions among all the planes. Sliding planes polished using #100 grinding powder yielded better results than polishing with #600 grinding powder. Therefore, the basic friction angles measured along the sliding planes polished using #100 grinding powder, as obtained in direct shear and triaxial compression tests, were the most reliable. The angle could also be measured satisfactorily by tilt testing along sliding planes polished with #100 grinding powder.

  • In this study, important characteristics were identified for the Geosynthetic-soil interface using overburden pressure and saltwater and fresh water to evaluate silt shear behavior of the Geosynthetic-soil interface. In addition, waste landfill can secure spaces for waste disposal in the sea and this spaces can be used for additional facilities which will be necessary in the future. Analysis of behavior characteristics on interface of Geosynthetic-soil shows that, if analyzed using standard consolidometers, the consolidation stress of fresh water increased significantly more than saltwater. When analyzed using cyclic shear apparatus, saltwater and freshwater in both conditions, the displacement value increases as the wire gauges become closer to the lower module, and the shear fracture tends to occur radically under saltwater conditions than fresh water. Therefore, seawater, fresh water that act on the interface of geosynthetic-soil, and installation of facility using geosynthetic should be considered as important parameters that are essential for the dynamic design factor of the water controlling facility.

  • Recently, the use of transfer slab system has increased greatly. However, several construction problems are being encountered owing to its excessive thickness. Therefore, in this study, a transfer slab system that uses a reverse drop panel, which can utilize the facility space of the pit floor by reducing the transfer slab thickness, was considered. To investigate the shear behavior of transfer slab system that uses the reverse drop panel, the two-way shear strength of transfer slab-column connection with the reverse drop panel was analyzed using nonlinear FE analysis. In addition, the two-way shear strength evaluations of transfer slab with the reverse drop panel conducted using the existing evaluation methods were verified by comparing the strengths predicted by those methods with the results of nonlinear FE analysis.

  • In masive concrete placement, cracking problem due to hydration heat is frequently encountered. One of measure to solve this problem is to make a construction joint. However, it is cumbersome to make it by chipping the surface of joint. In this study, push-out test for 18 specimens was conducted to compare the interface shear strength of consturction joints whose surfaces were prepared with three methods; chipping, rib-lath, folded rib-lath. Compared to the specimens made with conventional surface chipping, those with rib-lathe showd excellent preformance increasing shear resistance capacity and the role of shear key conceived by folding rib-lath played important role in enhancing shear resistance.

  • Although a number of constitutive models have been proposed to define the behavior of geotechnical materials including elastic, plastic, and dynamic response, flew numerical models have been developed for the cyclic shear behavior of rock joints or interfaces. Such realistic constitutive models play an important role in analyzing and predicting the response of joints under dynamic loads. The purpose of this research is to verify the constitutive model modified for rough granite joints based on Disturbed State Concept(DSC) model, which has been successfully verified with respect to other materials such as dry sand-steel interface and wet sand-concrete interface. Furthermore, DSC model is compared and verified with respect to cyclic shear tests and numerical analysis results based on Plesha model. Based on the results of this research, it can be stated that DSC model is capable of characterizing the cyclic shear behavior of rough granite joints under dynamic loads.

  • The needs for the utilization of space in the urban ara due to the increasing population and traffic volume. A Double-deck tunnel can be an appropriate solution. Geosynthetics are inevitably installed between ground and tunnel lining, therefore, geosynthetic-soil interface is also comprises. Dynamic shear behavior of geosynthetic-soil interface affects the dynamic behavior of tunnel, and experimental study is required since the behavior is very complicated. In this study, chemical factors such as acid and basic element in the groundwater and temperature are considered in the laboratory test. Multi-purpose Interface Apparatus(M-PIA) is utilized and submerging periods are 60 and 960 days. Consequently, dynamic shear degradation of geosynthetic-soil interface considering chemical and thermal factors are verified.
