  • Cancer cell lysis at pulsed DC is realized using micromachined electrodes. In this research, quantitative analyses are performed on cell lysis results. The cell volume increasing at the pulses applied are analyzed in different medium conditions on osmotic pressure and conductivity, and the cell lysis procedures are studied in detail experimentally. Phosphate buffered saline (PBS) is used as the medium. To change the conductivity of PBS, NaCl concentration of PBS is adjusted, and inositol is used with PBS to control the effects of the osmotic pressure to cell lysis performance.

  • A numerical investigation is made of transient evolutionary prcocess of electroosmotic flow in a two-dimensional microchannel connected to a reservoir. The channel height is very small so that two electric double layers forming on the charged surfaces are overlapped. Transient transports of ions in the electrolyte solution are computed by integrating the Nernst-Planck equation together with the Poisson equation for electric potential. The numerical results illustrate that there are two distinct transient phases. The physical mechanisms and relevant time scales for the transient evolution are described.

  • The induced-charge electroosmosis (ICEO) is a kind of electroosmotic flow which is generated by the electrical charge induced by an externally-applied electric field. That kind of electrokinetic phenomenon provides a nonmechanical technique to handle microscale flows and particles. In this work, we report that the ICEO-like flow is observed around two kinds of circular-cylindrical rod submerged in a dielectric liquid. The conductivity of the solution is varied by adding a surfactant. The flow field is visualized by the PIV method, and average flow speed shows a remarkable dependence on electrical input frequency. Interestingly, the characteristics of the flow are quite different from the conventional ICEO with respect to the flow direction and the locations of center of vortices.

  • This paper presents the PDMS surface characteristic change after the plasma process and the electroosmotic flow control technique for the two-dimensional focusing in the micro channels made of PDMS and glass. The channels are fabricated by plastic molding and micromachining technique. To observe the surface characteristic change as time elapses, we measure the contact angle of water on the surface and the velocity of the electroosmotic flow in a channel. The electric field adequate for focusing of a core flow in a confluence channel is obtained by the experiment. The computer simulation is performed to obtain the width and the depth of the core flow for several junction angles of the confluence channel.

  • The effects of relative humidity, current density and temperature on the ionic conductivity were studied in PEMFC (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell). Water contents and water flux in the electrolyte membrane largely affected ion conductivity. The water flux was modelled and simulated by only electro-osmotic drag and back-diffusion of water. Ion conductivities were measured at membrane state out of cell and measured at MEA (Membrane and Electrode Assembly) state in condition of operation. The water contents in membrane increase as relative humidity increased in PEMFC, as a results of which ion conductivity increased. Current enhanced electro-osmotic drag and back diffusion and then water contents linearly increased. Enhancement of current density results in ion conductivity. Ion conductivity of about 40% increased as the temperature increased from $50^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, water distribution inside a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) was measured experimentally. Water distribution is non-uniform because of vigorous chemical reaction and mass transport and has been difficult to measure experimentally. Therefore, much research relied on indirect measuring methods or numerical simulations. In this study, several mini temperature-humidity sensors were installed at the channel for measuring temperature and humidity of the flowing gas throughout the channel. Only one of two electrode channels was humidified externally, and the humidity distribution on the other side was measured, enabling the observation of water transport characteristics under various conditions. Diffusion through the membrane became more vigorous as the temperature of the humidifier rose, but at high current density, electro-osmotic drag became more effective than diffusion.

  • Three different surfactants, APG, Brij30, and SDS, were tested to study the characteristics of sorption on soil surfaces, washing ability, biodegradability, and electrokinetic removal. Kaolinite and phenanthrene were selected as a model soil and a representative HOC, respectively. Phenanthrene was sorbed on kaolinite up to 2,200 mg/kg dry soil. The APG, Brij30, and SDS were sorbed on soil to 40, 7, and 4g/kg soil, respectively. The washing ability of phenanthrene was in order of Brij30>SDS>APG. The biodegradability tested with sludge was in order of APG>Brij30>SDS. In the electrokinetic test, the highest removal efficiency was obtained with APG that exhibited the highest electroosmotic flow. To increase the removal efficiency of HOC in the electrokinetic remediation, the most important factor was the selection of surfactant which maximized the electroosmotic flow.

  • We investigated the influence of the properties of substrate material on the separation efficiency in microchip electrophoresis. We fabricated the various microchips and studied separation efficiency in microchannels composed of a single material such as quartz, glass, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and polymethylmetha crylate (PMMA), as well as hybrid micro channels composed of different materials. New fabrication process for glass chip was suggested and some treatment is added to improve fabrication process in other chip. Separation efficiency was compared by measuring migration times and bandwidths of EOF and analytes in each microchip. The efficiency is the function of migration time, which is affected by the electroosmotic flow (EOF), and bandwidth of an analyte. EOF is highly dependent upon the characteristics of a microchannel wall surface. Migration time was more reproducible in silica chips than that of PDMS chip and more band broadening was observed in the microchip composed of hybrid material due to non-uniformity of surface charge density at the walls of the channel.

  • An interfacial instability has recently been observed for the DC- and AC-powered electroosmotic flows of the two miscible electrolyte layers having different concentrations in microchannels. It is rather contrary to our common belief that the flow inside a microchannel is generally stable due to the dominant role of the viscous damping. In this work, we visualized the electroosmotic flow inside a T-channel to validate the numerical predictions. It is clearly shown that the strong vortices (which characterize the interface shapes) are generated at the interface of the two fluids, as was predicted in the numerical analysis.
