  • In Korean high yielding varieties developed by crosses between indica and japonica rice, the most limiting factor for yield increase may be attributed to the less number of tillers per unit area. The goal of this study is to find out the effect of the environmental factors as well as cultivation practice on the development and increase of tillers of Dasanbyeo, the high yielding indica / japonica hybrid cultivar. The effect of temperature was examined with 3 different light intensity, 220,600, and 1220 $\mu$㏖/s/$m^2$, respectively. For all the experiments, the leading japonica variety in Korea, Hwaseongbyeo, was used fur the check cultivar for the comparison with Dasanbyeo. The increase of the tillers was more prominent in Dasanbyeo than in Hwaseongbyeo at 220 $\mu$㏖/s/$m^2$ of light intensity, while the similar increase of tiller no. was found at 600 $\mu$㏖/s/$m^2$ of light intensity treatment. However, Hwaseongbyeo showed more rapid increase of tiller at 1220 $\mu$㏖/s/$m^2$ of light intensity. The mean number of the primary tiller ranged 5 to 7 in Dasanbyeo, and 2 to 7 in Hwaseongbyeo, showing greater variation in the latter case. However, the secondary tiller number ranged from 2 to 13 for the former, and 2 to 12 for the latter. The earliest initiation of tiller node of Dasanbyeo and Hwaseongbyeo was observed on 6 and 4 days after transplanting(DAT), respectively, at 600 $\mu$㏖/s/$m^2$ of light intensity, while 10, and 7 DAT, respectively, at 1,220 $\mu$㏖/s/$m^2$. No cultivar difference was observed at 600 $\mu$㏖/s/$m^2$ with the 18 DAT. The ratio of effective tiller was lower in Dasanbyeo, ranging from 47 to 55% than in Hwaseongbyeo, ranging from 72 to 100%.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the different DIF (day/night temperature differential) treatments on early growth of sweet pepper plants (Capsicum annuum L.) after planting. The DIF treatments were thus as follows. DIF levels are DIF-6 ($20-26^{\circ}C$) and DIF 0 ($23^{\circ}C$), DIF 3 ($24.5-21.5^{\circ}C$) and DIF 6 ($26-20^{\circ}C$). The DIF 3 and DIF 6 treatments significantly increased plant height of the sweet pepper plants during ten weeks after planting compared to DIF-6 and DIF 0. Leaf area per plant of DIF 3 treatment constantly increased and the level was greatest leaf area at ten weeks after planting. Fresh weight per plant treated with DIF-6 was lower and was reduced 74-77% range compared to other treatments. DIF 0 and DIF 3 treatments significantly affected dry weight and percentage of dry matter compared to DIF-6 and DIF 6. Especially DIF 6 treatment significantly decreased from eight weeks after planting. Percentage of dry matter of the leaf treated with DIF 0 and DIF 3 consistently increased from six weeks after planting, however, DIF-6 and DIF 6 treatments dramatically decreased from eight weeks after planting. High levels of DIF management cause growth retardant on early growth of sweet pepper plants, especially when night temperature is higher than day temperature, plants are indicated to be greater growth retardant.

  • This study was carried out to determine the forage production and quality of Italian ryegrass (IRG) and forage barley developed by Korea in Suwon, 2009~'10. The nine treatments were two IRG varieties (Kowinearly with early maturity and Kowinmaster with medium maturity), five barley varieties (Youngyang, Wooho, Yuyeon, Dami and Youho), and two mixtures (Kowinearly + Yuyeon and Kowinmaster + Yuyeon). The heading dates of Kowinearly and Kowinmaster were 14 May and 18 May, respectively. The growth stage of barley investigated at 22 May were late milk in Youngyang and Wooho, early dough in Dami and early to medium dough in Yuyeon and Youho. Plant length of IRG in IRG + barley mixtures was 117~118 cm, which was longer than those of IRG monoculture of 98~101 cm, and no lodging was found in mixtures. The dry matter (DM) percentage at harvest was 20.7~25.4% in all treatments. The botanical composition of IRG in mixtures was 43.1%. The percentage of spike per barley plant was become high according to progressed maturity, as a 35.7%, 44.1%, 54.8% and 57.2% in late milk, dough, yellowish and full ripeness stage, respectively, and the spike percentages of Youngyang and Wooho were tends to high. The crude protein (CP) content of IRG as 9.0~10.0% was higher than that of barley (7.0~8.5%), and the contents of NDF and ADF of barley were lower than those of IRG, and in vitro DM digestibility were 64.4% in Kowinearly, 64.1% in Kowinmaster, 64.5% in mixture, and 60.2% (Youho) to 66.4% (Wooho) in barley. The yields of DM, CP and in vitro digestible DM were high in Kowinmaster+barley mixture as a 11,508 kg, 1,046 kg and 7,422 kg per ha, respectively (p<0.05). However, no significant differences in forage yield were observed among cultivar of IRG, and barley, although Wooho was tends to high in digestibility and forage yield among five barley varieties. In conclusion, the mixture cultivation of IRG Kowinmaster + forage barley was recommended, because of preventing of IRG lodging, higher plant length of IRG, increasing of forage yield, and stable production. Selection of suitable winter forage species and variety for district, climate environment, and utilization type of farm was also important.

  • This study was conducted to establish an in vitro propagation system for sea-milkwort (Glaux maritima L.), which is an endangered coastal plant species with high horticultural value. Two phenotypes, 'Red type (RT)' and 'Pistachio type (PT)' based on the colors of stem and flower, were obtained from a personal horticulturist in 2009 and used for this study as plant materials. The stock plants showed typical morphologies in flower, capsule, and seed appearances as previously reported. Low temperature treatment at $4^{\circ}C$ for four or more weeks after in vitro sowing maximized seed germination percentage, indicating that imbibition of seed and subsequent low temperature treatment are crucial for its germination. The in vitro seedlings had phenotypic variation, falling into 'RT' and 'PT' classes like the stock plants. Although slight differences depending on genotype and medium were recognized, the fourth or fifth nodes detached from the in vitro seedlings revealed the best multiplication efficacy when estimated on the basis of total number of nodes of newly developed axillary shoots. In addition, the nodes from 'RT' and 'PT' regenerated the most shoots on medium supplemented with $0.5mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA alone and $0.5mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA plus $0.5mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ IAA, respectively. The node culture-derived plantlets were well acclimatized in a culture room ex vitro and completed the pseudo-annual life cycle coincident with that in the natural salt march habitat with the current cultivation method of applying fresh water-irrigation under an inland environment. This work represents the first report of in vitro propagation of sea-milkwort. Thus, our study will contribute to exo-habitat conservation and natural habitat restoration of this endangered species in addition to development of a horticultural product.

  • The present study investigated the plant growth characteristics, dormancy breaking, yield, and biological activity properties (contents of flavonoid and phenolic compounds, nitrite scavenging activity, and the survival rate of lung cancer) of four asparagus cultivars. It aimed to examine selection possibilities for high efficacy cultivar to promote biological activity in asparagus cultivation in South Korea. The results showed that the number of asparagus buds and root fresh and dry weight of 'Jersey Giant', 'Jersey Supreme', and 'NJ953' were higher than those of 'UC157' cultivar, and there were no differences in the number of roots. The dormancy breaking period of 'Jersey Supreme' was prolonged compared to the other cultivars. 'Jersey Giant' and 'NJ953' had more total spears, and greater spear diameter, and yield than other cultivars. Total flavonoid content was unaffected by cultivar and was higher in ethanol extraction than in hot water extraction. Total phenolic compound content was the lowest in 'NJ953' for both hot water and ethanol extracts, whereas in the ethanol extraction, 'UC157' had the highest, with $39.23mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. 'Jersey Giant', 'Jersey Supreme', and 'NJ953' all showed greater than 70% nitrite scavenging activity. In the case of ethanol extraction, the survival rates of lung cancer in extracts from 'Jersey Giant', 'Jersey Supreme', and 'UC157' were lower than 'NJ 953' cultivar, regardless of extraction concentration. The survival rate of lung cancer was lower in hot water extraction than in ethanol extraction, so that the consumption of asparagus is also expected to be helpful in preventing lung cancer. The growth characteristics and biological activity effects of edible asparagus that were identified in the present study are expected to be useful in selection of high efficacy cultivars for biological activity and utilization.

  • This study was performed to investigate the role of plant growth substances on the bulbing of cold type of garlic (Allium sativum L. cv. Uiseongmaneul) during long and short day conditions. The change in endogenous plant hormones such as abscisic acid (ABA), jasmonic acid (JA) and sugar contents in leaf blade and sheath was examined during the growth stage from bulb differentiation (starting at April 16) to bulbing (April 24 to May 18) in cold type of garlic. In the long day condition, ABA contents were higher than short day condition and ABA contents of leaf sheath were higher than leaf blade. ABA contents of growth stage in garlic were not changed during growth stage from April 16 to May 2, however it rapidly increased during bulbing (May 2 to May 18). On the other hand, endogenous JA contents in short day condition did not change in long day condition, it increased from April 16 to May 2. JA contents in the leaf sheath (33.85-62.04 $ng{\cdot}g^{-1}$ DW) were higher than leaf blade (15.39-30.04 $ng{\cdot}g^{-1}$ DW). These results showed that garlic bulb differentiation and bulbing was induced by JA in leaf sheath. In long day condition, total sugar contents in the leaf blade were increased from bulb differentiation (April 16) to bulbing (May 4) and it was decreased during bulbing (May 4 to May 18) while the total sugar content in leaf sheath were gradually increased from bulb differentiation (April 16) to bulbing (May 18). In conclusion, our results showed that there is a significant correlation between the bulb development of garlic and hormonal content in the leaf sheath.

  • This study was conducted to find out the effect of $SiO_2$ treatment on the $SiO_2$ concentration in guttation liquid, the amount of guttation liquid exudated from the margin of rice leaves, and the relationships between $SiO_2$ concentration in guttation liquid and foliar burn during the rice seedling stage, using two rice varieties;Nagdong-byeo (a Japonica) and Samgang-byeo (a - Indica - Japonica hybrid). Seedlings were cultivated in water solution and enveloped in polyvinyl case ($50cm{\times}150cm{\times}70cm$). $SiO_2$ treatment increased the amount of guttation liquid, the amount of guttation liquid (Nagdong-byeo:4.30mg/plant, Samgang-byeo:4.34mg/plant)) treated with 200ppm of $SiO_2$ was greater than any other level, decreased over 200ppm of $SiO_2$. $SiO_2$ concentration in guttation liquid was increased as application rates of $SiO_2$ increased, showing the positive correlation, and $SiO_2$ in guttation liquid/$SiO_2$ in culture ratio decreased over 100ppm of $SiO_2$. The highest concenitration of $SiO_2$ (Nagdong-byeo:172.6ppm/lcc, Samgang-byeo:199.8ppm/lcc) in guttation liquid was obtained at 12 hrs after $SiO_2$ applied. Foliar burn seemed to be closely related with $SiO_2$ concentration in guttation liquid.

  • A new rice cultivar "Keumo 3" was developed for adopting under double cropping system with after or before cash crop cultivation. It was selected from the cross-combination between YR17202 $F_2$/Shinkeumobyeo//YR15727-B-B-B-102. The parent, YR17202 $F_2$ individual plant, was used for tolerance to lodging, it derived from a cross between Nonganbyeo/Shinkeumobyeo. Nonganbyeo is well known to lodging tolerance cultivar, as well as biotic stress, because it was developed by crossing with Tongil type. And the YR15727-B-B-B-102 line used as another parent with short growth duration, likewise highly resistance to rice blast disease. The pedigree derived from the cross-combination YR17202 $F_2$/Shinkeumobyeo//YR15727-B-B-B-102 were generated to $F_7$, and a best line among them named as Milyang 201. After a series of yield trials, including local adaptability test conducted throughout the peninsular of Korea, Milyang 201 was registered with the name of "Keumo 3" in 2005. The cultivar belongs to a early maturing group and heads 4 days earlier than Keumobyeo, a standard cultivar. It has short culm, and less spikelet number per panicle than Keumobyeo. However, its milled rice yield grown under extremely late transplanting time, 10. July, over the 3 local sites for 2003-2005 years, averaged 4,48 MT/ha, which is 6% higher than the standard, Keumobyeo. "Keumo 3" has showed a durable resistance to leaf blast disease during fourteen blast nurseries screening covered from south to north in Korea for 2003-2007 years. And it was confirmed harbours pi-zt, a durable blast resistance gene. Moreover it was incompatible with 19 blast isolates under artificial inoculation, except one isolate, K1101. Additionally, "Keumo 3" exhibits resistance to $K_1$, $K_2$ and $K_3$ of bacterial blight pathogen, as well as strip virus disease resistance, and moderate resistance to dwarf virus disease. Consequently, the new rice cultivar "Keumo 3" would be well adopted where a bio stress makes a big problem annually.

  • This study was conducted to reduce the dependability of farmers on chemical fertilizers for rice cultivation. Soil chemical and biological properties were monitored before experiment and at the time of harvesting. The results showed that EC, available $SiO_2$, and exchangeable $Ca^{2+}$ were decreased at the time of harvesting while pH, OM, and exchangeable $K^+$ and $Mg^{2+}$ were remain unchanged, compared with soil before experiment. Population of aerobic bacteria, Bacillus sp., and fungi were also increased at the time of harvesting in the paddy field, compared with before fertilization, in the treatment of 50% soil-testing fertilizer+ 50% compost. Concentrations of N, P, and K in rice leaves increased with the fertilizers application, maximum increase was recorded in 50% soil-testing fertilizer+ 50% compost. Non-significant difference was observed in the morphological parameters of rice among the treatments. The chlorophyll contents of rice leaf increased in a similar fashion up to 60 days, thereafter, sharp decrease was observed in all the treatments. Maximum yield (per 10a) was recorded in the field treated with 50% soil-testing fertilizer+ 50% compost followed by standard applied fertilizer, 70% soil-testing fertilizer+ 30% compost, soil-testing fertilizer and unfertilized plot. Amylose content showed non-significant difference within the treatments. Protein content increased with the use of fertilizers and best protein content was recorded in the treatment of 50% soil-testing fertilizer+ 50% compost. It was concluded that the amount of the chemical fertilizer used was directly proportional to the protein content of rice grain. However, the palatability of rice grown in unfertilized field was better than the treatments but minimum yield was obtained. Hence, the treatment of 50% soil-testing fertilizer+ 50% compost, was the best among the fertilizer combinations for rice cultivation as supported by the yield, protein and palatability index.

  • Detailed information on soil characteristics is of great importance for the use and conservation of soil resources that are essential for human welfare and ecosystem sustainability. This paper introduces soil inventory of Korea focusing on national soil database establishment, information systems, use, and future direction for natural resources management. Different scales of soil maps surveyed and soil test data collected by RDA (Rural Development Administration) were computerized to construct digital soil maps and database. Soil chemical properties and heavy metal concentrations in agricultural soils including vulnerable agricultural soils were investigated regularly at fixed sampling points. Internet-based information systems for soil and agro-environmental resources were developed based on 'National Soil Survey Projects' for managing soil resources and for providing soil information to the public, and 'Agroenvironmental Change Monitoring Project' to monitor spatial and temporal changes of agricultural environment will be opened soon. Soils data has a great potential of further application in estimation of soil carbon storage, water capacity, and soil loss. Digital mapping of soil and environment using state-of-the-art and emerging technologies with a pedometrics concept will lead to future direction.
