  • The need to increase the reliability of a structural system has been significantly brought in the procedure of real designs to consider, for instance, the material properties or geometric dimensions that reveal a random or incompletely known nature. Reliability based design optimization of a real system now becomes an emerging technique to achieve reliability, robustness and safety of these problems. Finite element analysis program and the reliability analysis program are necessary to evaluate the responses and the probabilities of failure of the system, respectively. Moreover, integration of these programs is required during the procedure of reliability based design optimization. It is well known that reliability based design optimization can often have so many local minima that it cannot converge to the specified probability of failure. To overcome this problem, barrier function method in reliability based design optimization is suggested. To illustrate the proposed formulation, reliability based design optimization of a bracket is performed. AMV and FORM are employed for reliability analysis and their optimization results are compared based on the accuracy and efficiency.

  • The purpose of this paper is that it analyzes the historical development of the concept of trigonometric functions and discuss some didactical implications. The results of the study are as follows. First, the concept of trigonometric functions is developed from line segments measuring ratios to numbers representing the ratios. Geometry, arithmetic, algebra and analysis has been integrated in this process. Secondly, as a result of developing from practical calculation to theoretical function, periodicity is formalized, but 'trigonometry' is overlooked. Third, it must be taught trigonometry relationally and structurally by the principle of similarity. Fourth, the conceptual generalization of trigonometric functions must be recognized as epistemological obstacle, and it should be improved to emphasize the integration revealed in history. The results of these studies provide some useful suggestions to teaching and learning of trigonometry.

  • When the regression function is discontinuous at a point, the variance function is usually discontinuous at the point. In this case, we had better propose a test for the existence of a discontinuity point with the regression function rather than the variance function. In this paper we consider that the variance function only has a discontinuity point. We propose a nonparametric test for the existence of a discontinuity point with the second moment function since the variance function and the second moment function have the same location and jump size of the discontinuity point. The proposed method is based on the asymptotic distribution of the estimated jump size.

  • The directional algebraic reconstruction technique (DART) using the trigonometric current pattern is one of the image reconstruction algorithms in electrical impedance tomography (EIT). This method needs to compute resistances between electrode pairs as using relation between the injected currents and measured voltages for the reconstruction of the inner image. The delay time is incurred in this process. Therefore this paper proposes modified directional algebraic reconstruction technique (mDART) using the adjacent current pattern instead of the trigonometric current pattern to solve the delay time for initial resistance values. The proposed method uses measured voltages instead of computed resistances in the reconstruction algorithm. Hence this method can eliminate the delay time because it does not use the resistances. In conclusion, the proposed method improves image quality and image reconstruction time by using the adjacent current pattern. To prove performance of the proposed method, we carried on computer simulation of various cases.

  • Linear estimator, a weighted sum of the sample observation, is commonly adopted to estimate the finite population parameters such as population totals in survey sampling. The weight for a sampled unit is often constructed by multiplying the base weight, which is the inverse of the first-order inclusion probability, by an adjustment term that takes into account of the auxiliary information obtained throughout the population. The linear estimator using the weight adjustment is often more efficient than the one using only the bare weight, but its valiance estimation is more complicated. We discuss variance estimation for a general class of weight-adjusted estimator. By identifying that the weight-adjusted estimator can be viewed as a function of estimated nuisance parameters, where the nuisance parameters were used to incorporate the auxiliary information, we derive a linearization of the weight-adjusted estimator using a Taylor expansion. The method proposed here is quite general and can be applied to wide class of the weight-adjusted estimators. Some examples and results from a simulation study are presented.

  • An inducing current of power feeding line of high-speed railway system is varied by a relative position of telecommunication cable to the feeding line between plants. An analytical calculation formula of this inducing current is described in ITU-T Directives using multiconductor line method or two line method. In this paper, using the two line method, a variation characteristic of inducing current is simulated. The inducing current has a characteristic of hyperbolic function which is a symmetric shape of curve in the range between power feeding plants. This basic variation property can be considered when a power induction protection measure is planned.

  • As the Public Procurement Service announced the compulsory of BIM adaption in every public construction from 2016, the importance of BIM is increasing. Besides, automatic code checking takes significance in terms of the quality control for BIM based design. In this study, rule-sets were defined for Act on the Promotion and Guarantee of Access for the Disabled, the Aged, and Pregnant Women to Facilities and Information. Three analytic steps were suggested to shortlist the objective clauses from the entire code; the frequency analysis using project reviews for architectural code compliance, the clause analysis on quantifiability, and the analysis for model checking possibilities. The shortlisted clauses were transformed into the machine readable rule-set definition. A case study was conducted to verify the adaptiveness and consistency of rule-set definitions. In future study, it is required the methodologies of selecting objective clauses to be specified and its indicators to be quantified. Also case studies should be performed to determine the pre-conditions in modeling and to check interoperability issues and other possible errors in models.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to optimize the thread pattern of orthodontic microimplants. Methods: In search of an optimal thread for orthodontic microimplants, an objective function stability quotient (SQ) was built and solved which will help increase the stability and torsional strength of microimplants while reducing the bone damage during insertion. Selecting the AbsoAnchor SH1312-7 microimplant (Dentos Inc., Daegu, Korea) as a control, and using the thread height (h) and pitch (p) as design parameters, new thread designs with optimal combination of hand p combination were developed. Design soundness of the new threads were examined through insertion strain analyses using 3D finite element simulation, torque test, and clinical test. Results: Solving the function SQ, four new models with optimized thread designs were developed (h200p6, h225p7, h250p8, and h275p8). Finite element analysis has shown that these new designs may cause less bone damage during insertion. The torsional strength of two models h200p6 and h225p7 were significantly higher than the control. On the other hand, clinical test of models h200p6 and h250p8 had similar success rates when compared to the control. Conclusion: Overall, the new thread designs exhibited better performance than the control which indicated that the optimization methodology may be a useful tool when designing orthodontic microimplant threads.

  • The productionof the highly relible softwae systems and theirs performance evaluation hae become important interests in the software industry. The software evaluation has been mainly carried out in ternns of both reliability and performance of software system. Software reliability is the probability that no software error occurs for a fixed time interval during software testing phase. These theoretical software reliability models are sometimes unsuitable for the practical testing phase in which a software error at a certain testing stage occurs by causes of the imperfect debugging, abnornal software correction, and so on. Such a certatin software testing stage needs to be considered as an outlying stage. And we can assume that the software reliability does not improve by means of muisance factor in this outlying testing stage. In this paper, we discuss Bavesian software reliability growth modeling and estimation procedure in the presence of an imidentitied outlying software testing stage by the modification of Jehnski Moranda. Also we derive the Bayes estimaters of the software reliability panmeters by the assumption of prior information under the squared error los function. In addition, we evaluate the proposed software reliability growth model with an unidentified outlying stage in an exchangeable model according to the values of nuisance paramether using the accuracy, bias, trend, noise metries as the quantilative evaluation criteria through the compater simulation.
