  • Given that music is not part of the national/regular curriculum and how music therapy is a new endeavor in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), this study aimed to investigate parents' perceptions of the music therapy given to their children with disabilities in the UAE. A survey was administered to 33 parents of children with disabilities living in Sharjah, UAE. The survey consisted of 43 questions related to characteristics of the music therapy sessions that the participants' children received and the parents' satisfaction with their children's music therapy. The results showed that participants reported a high level of satisfaction with the music therapy provided to their children. In terms of their participation in music therapy sessions, 33.3% of parents co-participated in music therapy sessions with their children, and 45.5% of parents observed their children's sessions. Parents who had direct participation in music therapy sessions were significantly more satisfied with their children's music therapy (p < .05) and perceived greater positive changes in their children as a result of the therapy (p < .05). Parents perceived their children as being able to positively respond to music, leading to positive changes in behavior. Despite these benefits, participants also reported the need for formal opportunities for family members to learn about the applications and outcomes of music therapy. The findings of this study supports the implementation of music therapy throughout the UAE and point to the need for future studies as music therapy expands across the country.

Descriptive statistical analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and moderated mediation effect analysis were applied. The research results are as follows. First, the parenting stress of parents raising disabled children showed a positive correlation with parenting efficacy, a negative correlation between parenting stress and mental health, and a negative correlation between parenting efficacy and mental health. Second, parenting time moderated and mediated the effect of parenting stress on mental health through parenting efficacy. • This study attempted to reveal the essential meaning of happy life for non-disabled children with disabled parents through a phenomenological research method for non-disabled children with disabled parents using welfare centers. As a result, 76 meaningful statements related to a happy life, eight categories of 20 topics have been drawn up, and the essential meaning of a happy life for a child is 'a happy life for parents', 'a life where parents are recognized' and 'a life where parents are no different from other families,' and 'a life where a child is living happily' as an 'economically stable life' and 'a life with disabilities' As such, I believe that since this period is important for children, there is a pressing need for ways to intervene and improve awareness of the disabled and the role of life.

  • The This is a study on the level of depression and parental efficacy of the mothers who have children with disabilities. Thus, it compared the level of depression of the mothers of children with intellectual disabilities and the mothers of children with cerebral palsy. Both groups displayed mild depressive state; however, there was not a statistically significant difference between the two groups. Although there was not a significant difference between the two groups for parent efficacy, the factors of the number of family members and whether to participate in self-help meetings displayed a significant difference in the relationship of parent efficacy in accordance with the demographic characteristics. Of the mothers of children with intellectual disabilities, those mothers who were participating in the self-help meetings were found to have a higher parent efficacy than the mothers who were not participating in the self-help meetings. However, of the mothers of children with cerebral palsy, those mothers who were not participating in the self-help meetings were found to have a higher parent efficacy. As for the correlation between level of depression and parent efficacy, it was found that the higher the parent efficacy was, the lower the level of depression was. The interest was found to be higher with higher parent efficacy when sub-dividing and comparing frustration and interest that were the sub-domains of parent efficacy.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of social support on the relationship between parenting stress and depression among parents of children with a disability. One hundred and fifty parents of children with a disability from Gwangju area were asked to complete a survey including The Parental Stress Scale, The Social Support Scale, and The Depression Scale. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, pearson correlation, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 24.0. The results of the study are as follows: First, the correlation analysis showed statistically significant correlations among parental stress, social support and depression. Second, the simple regression analysis showed the direct effect of parental stress on depression. Third, the multiple regression analysis showed the mediating effect of social support on the relationship between parental stress and depression. This suggests the social support may reduce the negative effect of the parental stress on the depression. Implications, limitations, and suggestions for future study are discussed.

  • Objectives:This study investigated the relationship among child's behavior problems, maternal depression, and parenting stress in children with psychiatric diagnoses and their mothers, and the effect of these variables to the mothers' parenting stress. Methods:Seventy-three children(31 externalizing, 24 internalizing, 18 mixed) and their mothers were involved in this study. The mothers of three groups completed MMPI, KPI-C(Korean Personality Inventory for Children), and PSI(Parenting Stress Index). To investigate the relationships among each variables, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, stepwise regression analysis were performed. Results:There was no significant difference in maternal depression among three groups of children. In 2-Way ANOVA, main effect of maternal depression was statistically significant on depression, parent health, and relationship with spouse subfactor in parent domain, parent domain total, and overall parenting stress. But the main effect of child group was statistically significant on distractability/hyperactivity subfactor in child domain only. In regression analysis, maternal depression explained the parent domain of parenting stress most effectively, and child's hyperactivity and anxiety explained the child domain of parenting stress significantly. Conclusion:These findings suggest that it is important to intervene maternal depression to reduce the parenting stress, along with the treatment of the child's behavior problems.

Participants were mothers with disabled children who recruited from D & C city. Collected data was analyzed using SPSS 21 version with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, & multiple regression. Family strength was negatively correlated with the parenting stress. In regression analysis, religion, treatment period, and family strength had a significant impact on parenting stress (F=5.158, p<.001) and these factors explained 28.5% of the parenting stress. These findings indicated that it is necessary to develop a program for increasing family strength in parent with disabled children.

  • Summary:This study was designed to examine the effect of mother's depressive mood and parenting related attitude on parenting behavior, focusing on the cases having an ADHD child. Method:A total of 82 parents, 31 parents having children with ADHD and 51 normal, were involved in this study. The children of ADHD and normal group were 6-11 years old. ADHD group were diagnosed as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder by psychiatric doctor and psychological evaluations using DSMIV criteria and the normal group were excluded by using Diagnostic Rating Scale-Parent, Teacher Form. The mothers of both group completed a series of questionnaire about mother's depressive mood and parenting-related attitude. To investigate the relationships between each variables, Student's t-test, correlation, stepwise regression, and hierarchical regression analysis were performed. Result:In correlation analysis, Mothers with an ADHD child were likely to report more coercive parenting behavior, more negative parenting-related attitudes, and depressive mood than normal group. In regression analysis, mother's parenting stress, dysfunctional thoughts, parenting competence, and depressive mood predicted coercive parenting behavior significantly, total explaining 50% of its variance, and especially depressive mood explained 29% of their coercive parenting behavior. These Results indicated that mother's depressive mood accounted for a substantial portion of coercive parenting behavior. Conclusion:These findings suggested that it is significantly important to reduce Mother's depressive mood through dealing with parenting sense of competence and dysfunctional thoughts, so, both parent education program and cognitive-behavioral therapeutic approach are needed to change parent's coercive parenting behavior. Finally, limitation of the present study and suggestions were discussed for further studies.
