The present study argues that film director Lee Ae-rim animation works depict the world of the grotesque and not only are important sociocultural phenomena but also hold the significance of humor and subversion. The grotesque exhibits the intriguing characteristics of expressing a perspective critical of the existing society through the sensibilities of minorities and is used broadly as a term not only in the aesthetic sense but also designating sociocultural phenomena. Although discussed separately in terms of Mikhail Bakhtin's carnival grotesque and Mary Russo's uncanny grotesque, the grotesque fundamentally rejects existing order and conventions and is externalized through unique expressions, thus opening up a rich possibility for rejection, humor, satire, transformation, and deconstruction of and regarding the authority of the mainstream. Although they constitute a fictional medium, animation films are social products as well so that they are affected by society, culture, and history and stand as important texts that must be interpreted in terms of the relationships between humans' instinctive desires and society and between the overall culture and artistic media. However, the rarity of grotesque portrayals in South Korean animation films also proves that it is a society where even problems that are in themselves sensitive must be manifested ingeniously on a conventional level. South Korean society has a unique history of colonialism and national division and is simultaneously in the unique situation of a society that has undergone growth at a nearly unprecedented rate. Consequently, the society exhibits closed yet dynamic particularity where everyday tension and rigidity, wariness of others and extreme competition are intertwined in a complex manner. This study was started by recognizing that visual storytelling(VST) is an important factor that determines the success of the work. The goal of this study is to analyze the VST study approaching from the narrative and visual dimension by analyzing the conflict intensity and VST factor. Therefore, in this paper, we analyzed the conflicts of the theater animation(4) that succeeded in the worldwide success and attempted the VST interpretation by approaching it technically. The results and contents of the study are as follows. Firstly, based on the narrative theory of Sung bong-Sun and Robert McKee, we classified the conflict scenes and found the kinds of conflicts. In addition, based on the 5B model, a total of 108 conflict shots were extracted. Secondly, through expert experiment, we found the conflict intensity of conflict shots. Thirdly, the visual elements of fifteen significant conflicts were extracted from internal and super individual conflicts. Fourth, as a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the reliability of the visual elements in the inner and super personal conflicts was in the range of 100-83.33%, and the frequency of usage was found to be widely distributed in 5.88-70.59% and 5-70%. This means that the VST expression, which relied on the sense of the artist, can be engineered. Finally, I expect that it will be the basis of the development of the VST Tool which can predict the conflict expression of the work in the animation pre - production stage successfully.
(傳說의 故鄕) is a broadcast play as one-act play series based on Korean legends and folktales. It was first aired in 1977 from KBS and there has been borrowed from this play in a variety of genres such as books and movies as the name of this series securing its popularity and awareness of the public. In this context, this is a representative work for Korean horror genre. Recently, for example, a series webtoon <2013 Home of the Legends> is published on one of the main portal websites, NAVER from July, 2013. This webtoon is main subject of this study. The purpose of this study is to discuss how the genre characteristics of Korean horror in TV serial play transmitted and changed in series webtoon <2013 Home of the Legends>. TV serial play is a representative narrative based on Korean folktales, trying to change its narrative in the range of undestroyed folktale basic move with combining the original motifs. Serial webtoon <2013 Home of the Legends>, however, deconstructs this combination motif in folktale form and leads to new move in narrative. For Korean users accustomed to Korean folktale form as the architext, this will be expected as reversal and make catharsis. Meanwhile, the deconstruction of combination motif leads to extinction of its cause-and-effect, which consists the axis of original narrative form, with resulting powerless theme, good overcoming evil and punitive justice. The aspects of changes in <2013 Home of the Legends> represent new orientation of Korean horror.
What is noticeable in Changgeuk Madame Ong is that for "narrativization," a main character is replaced with Madame Ong and her mother and a reinvented story as a result thereof is the female liberation from oppression. The film Burning (Lee Chang-dong, 2018) is one of the most noted Korean films in recent years as a work that unfolds an elaborate narrative in a delicate visualization. This film is a multi-vocal text in which different types of characters appear and scattered objective facts and ambiguous subjective desires are intertwined, so it is a text that has room for diverse interpretations. This article attempts to read Burning as an ethical discourse centered on the protagonist Jong-su, noting that the film raises universal and significant ethical issues that transcend the specific social and historical conditions of a contemporary Korean youth. I would like to examine the situation in which Jong-su is facing and his reaction to it, above all, from the perspective of Jong-su's ethical awakening and leap forward. Jong-su, a young South Korean non-regular man living in the present, encounters and connects with Hae-mi and Ben and attempts to understand the mysteries of the world. His trajectory, which the film shows closely, inevitably intersects the social and historical dimension of confusion and frustration of a young man graduated from the Department of Creative Writing, the reality of family dissolution and the individual psychological dimension of the sudden disappearance of his lover Hae-mi. Burning is a magistrate film that depicts Jong-su as an ethical subject oriented toward 'communal togetherness' while confronting the world and exploring its mysteries despite all his unfavorable conditions, such as his social position of the precariat youth and the epistemological uncertainty of reality perception. This study aims to study the relationship and narrative structure through types of conscious shown through characters of animation. Regardless of professional knowledge, animation viewers are able to decide sympathy cognitively during watching. There are previous studies examining elements regarding the sympathy felt by viewers, "how much sympathy one feels about the story" conveyed by character is one of the most significant element. "Sympathizing" is reacting to the emotion of character, which does not concentrate on visual phenomenon revealing from appearance and mise en scene, but from "conscious" establishing relationship from behavior and practice. In other words, it starts from in-depth insight regarding the types of conscious and relationship between characters. Therefore, this thesis aims to analyze the types of conscious of main character Simon of Japanese animation which was aired in Korea in 27 episodes, and analyze how it conducted meaning structuralization of relationship with surrounding characters in the growth process of every episode. When analyzing the animation, the study concentrated on analyzing the conscious formation process of character, completeness of relationship and structure rather than the plot or power of delivery of direction, to insist that animation should not only convey humor or fun but secure the in-dept self discernment.
