Development of a Wastewater Detection System using UV Fluorescence Reaction (자외선 형광반응을 이용한 오폐수 검출장치 개발)

  • Oil-related products have provided many benefits to humanity, but are significant contributors to environmental pollution. As per the International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirements, in the future, all ships must be equipped with filtering equipment and 5ppm bilge alarms that can help remove or reduce oil products during wastewater treatment. In this study, a UV fluorescence measurement system that can detect the oil components in wastewater containing both water and oil was developed. When an excitation wavelength of 254nm was used to irradiate the wastewater, the amount of UV at a divergent wavelength of 360nm was measured to measure the contamination. Based on the measurement, it was concluded that this system is suitable for use as the 5ppm bilge alarm proposed by IMO.

  • 일반적인 고상반응법을 이용하여 $Eu^{2+}$ 활성화 $\alpha$-sialon 황색 형광체를 합성한 후 구조 및 광학특성을 측정하였다. $Ca^{2+}$$Si^{4+}$ 이온의 비화학양론적 첨가에 따른 광학 특성 측정결과, 중심 발광 파장이 약 585 nm 인 높은 휘도의 황색형광체를 얻을 수 있었다. 본 연구에서는 $Ca^{2+}:Si^{4+}$ 첨가비에 따른 광학특성 변화를 관찰하였으며, 이를 바탕으로 구조 및 미세구조 변화에 대한 연구를 수행하였다. 20 mol%의 Al deficient 조성을 갖는 형광체의 광학특성 측정결과 화학양론조성에 비해 20% 이상의 휘도향상을 나타내었다. 이와 같은 결과로부터, 본 연구에서 제시된 Al deficient $\alpha$-sialon 황색 형광체는 자외선 및 청색 LED용 형광체로 적합할 것으로 판단된다.

Convenient Evaluation of Stored Apple Pollen Viability by Fluorochromatic Reaction (형광염색반응에 의한 장기 저장 사과 화분의 활력 측정)

  • In order to evaluate stored apple pollen viability, in vitro germination test was performed on a microscope slide coated with the culture medium containing fluorescein diacetate (FDA). However, the inclusion of FDA to the culture medium declined pollen germination. Alternatively, the fluorochromatic reaction procedure was tested. The procedure involved dusting pollen grains onto drops of 10% sucrose solution containing 0.002% FDA and allowing them to accumulate fluorescein. Within 30 min after the fluorochromatic reaction, viable pollen grains clearly fluoresced under ultraviolet light. Both the in vitro germination test and the fluorochromatic reaction procedure revealed that stored apple pollen viability was not considerably decreased over storage up to at least 39 months. Of the cultivars examined by both methods, 'Fuji' and 'Senshu' pollen viability was highest, 'Tsugaru' was intermediate, and 'Jonagold' was lowest. The fluorescing percentages appeared approximately comparable to the germination percentages except for the 'Senshu' pollens stored for 3 months, although the fluorescing percentages was slightly higher than the germination percentages. Strong and highly significant correlations were found between the two methods. It can thus be concluded that the fluorochromatic reaction procedure provides a convenient and reliable evaluation of stored apple pollen viability.

  • In this study, reliability assessment was carried out on UV(ultraviolet) indicators for the application of the indicator method on cultural heritages. As a result, some UV indicators(L, K, and M) proved to be unsuitable due to their low reactivity to UV and high reactivity to RH(relative humidity). On the other hand, indicator S showed considerable color changes and fading due to UV-B and UV-C according to the integral amount of UV irradiation. Indicator S showed the most distinct reaction to UV and a remarkable applicability to exhibition light, which are used in museums. Therefore, UV indicator S is an easy and useful monitoring tool for light environment management in cultural- property conservation facilities.

Morphological Changes of Hair Structure by UV Irradiation (자외선 조사에 의한 모발구조의 형태학적 변화)

  • In this study, we have investigated the effects of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation on the external and internal structure of human hair. For changes in morphological and chemical structure of UV-exposed hair, we utilized several microscopic techniques such as scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM), and etc. The SEM showed the scales of UV-exposed hair appeared to be rough and bulkier because of chemical oxidation during UV irradiation. Small bulgy area of UV_exposed hair surface was appeared as a result of the decomposition in cysteic acid. In the TEM picture the UV-exposed hair showed the cleaved aperture of hair and destruction of melanin granules. Three dimensional topographical images were obtained by using CLSM. In the optical single section, high fluorescent intensity appeared in virgin hair. In the case of UV-exposed hair, low fluorescence intensity appeared. This means the aromatic amino acids in virgin hair were more abundant than UV-exposed hair.

  • 고상반응법을 사용하여 $Eu^{3+}$ 이온의 농도를 변화시키면서 $Ba_{1-x}MoO_4:Eu{_x}^{3+}$ 형광체 분말을 제조하였다. 합성한 적색 형광체의 결정 구조, 표면 형상, 발광 및 흡수 스펙트럼은 각각 XRD, SEM, 자외선-가시광선 분광기를 사용하여 조사하였다. 형광체 분말의 결정 구조는 $Eu^{3+}$ 이온의 농도비에 관계없이 $2{\theta}=26.52^{\circ}$에 주 피크를 갖는 정방정계이었으며, 최대 적색 발광 스펙트럼은 618 nm에서 관측되었다.

UV Effects on Production and Photoreactivity of Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter in Media of Polar Marine Phytoplanktons (극지 식물플랑크톤의 유색 용존 유기물의 생산과 광반응성에 대한 자외선 영향)

  • In this study, we evaluated the production and photoreactivity of CDOM of two polar phytoplanktons - Phaeocystis antarctica and Phaeocystis pouchetii, in order to find out UV effects on phytoplanktons. In visible region, CDOM in media of both phytoplanktons under UV-R decreased during 48hrs incubation period. However, in UV region CDOM decreased 30 % in the media of P. antarctica, but increased 10% in media of P. pouchetii, compared to CDOM concentrations of control after 48 hr incubation. This result indicates that biota in polar environment would not well protected from UV-R harmful effect when P. antarctica is dominant because of loss of CDOM, but when P. pouchetii is dominant species, production of UV absorbing organic matter could play more efficiently for UV screening for marine biota. Also we confirmed that FDOM of humic substance (C-peak) produced by these phtoplanktons under UV-R stress were well matched with fluorescence characteristics of the UV-protecting compound, MAAs. This finding shows that Phaeocystis pouchetti with low photoreactivity would contribute to DOM pool of polar marine environment under stratification by global warming.

  • It has been concerned about the indoor air contaminants because of the hours spend in indoor space. These contaminants are emitted from various indoor facilities. Therefore, even though there concentrations are very low, adverse effects can't be ignored. However, treatment technologies are insufficient to deal with these contaminants. For this reason, the objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of artificial ultraviolet(UV) detoxification using $TiO_2$ system for degrading formaldehyde contaminated indoor air. The experiment was also performed to investigate the formaldehyde removal effect of fluorescence lamp as an alternative UV light source because it is used in indoor as a light source. The results presented demonstrated that as the $TiO_2$ dosage is more and the reaction area is wider, the photocatalytic degradation rate does more enhanced. Degradation of TCE was more rapid used in $UV_{254}$ lamp than in fluorescence lamp. However, if it is operated during enough time, it will be able to remove the considerable quantity of TCE in case of using fluorescence lamp.

  • 희토류 이온이 치환 고용된 실리케이트계 형광체는 자외선으로 여기될 때 높은 발광 효율을 나타내기 때문에 광전 소자, 레이저, 형광램프에 응용할 수 있는 발광 재료로 상당한 관심이 집중되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 고상반응법을 사용하여 초기 물질 (99.99% 순도), (99.99%), (99.9%), (99.9%)을 화학 정량으로 준비하여 활성제 이온 Eu3+와 Sm3+의 함량비를 0, 0.01, 0.05, 0.10, 0.20 mol로 변화시켜 BaSiO3:RE3+ (RE=Eu, Sm) 형광체를 제조하여 그것의 발광과 흡광 특성을 조사하였다. Eu3+ 이온이 도핑된 BaSiO3 형광체의 경우에, 발광 스펙트럼은 모든 시료에서 전이에 의한 발광 스펙트럼을 보였으며, 특히 j=2에서 가장 강한 적색 형광이 피크 620 nm에서 관측되었다. 상대적으로 발광 세기가 약한 595 nm 에 정점을 갖는 주황색 발광과 705 nm 에 피크를 갖는 적색 발광 스펙트럼이 관측되었다. Eu3+ 이온의 함량비가 0.15 mol 일 때 세 영역의 발광 스펙트럼의 세기는 최대값을 나타내었다. 주흡광 스펙트럼은 Eu3+ 이온의 함량비에 관계없이 397 nm에서 관측되었다. Sm3+ 이온이 도핑된 BaSiO3 형광체의 경우에, 모든 시료는 Sm3+ 이온의 함량비에 관계없이 전이에 의한 발광 스펙트럼을 보여주고 있으며, 특히 j=7/2에서 가장 강한 주황색 형광이 피크 603 nm에서 관측되었다. 상대적으로 발광 세기가 약한 567 nm에 정점을 갖는 황색 발광과 651 nm에 피크를 갖는 적색 발광 스펙트럼이 관측되었다. Sm3+ 이온의 함량비가 0.05 mol 일 때 세 종류의 발광 스펙트럼의 세기는 최대값을 나타내었다. Sm3+ 이온의 함량비가 더욱 증가함에 따라 모든 발광 스펙트럼의 세기는 순차적으로 감소하였는데, 이 현상은 농도 소광 현상에 기인함을 알 수 있었다. 주 흡광 스펙트럼은 Sm3+ 이온의 함량비에 관계없이 406 nm에서 관측되었으며, 이밖에도 상대적으로 세기가 약한 흡광 스펙트럼이 237 nm, 377 nm와 476 nm에서 관측되었다.

Photoluminescence Properties of Novel $Mg_{2}SnO_{4}:Mn$ Phosphor (새로운 $Mg_{2}SnO_{4}:Mn$ 형광체의 광 발광 특성)

  • A new $Mg_{2-x}MN_xSnO_4$ phosphor with an inverse spinel structure was synthesized by the solid-state reaction technique. The photoluminescence properties of the $Mg_2SnO_4$:Mn phosphors were investigated under 147nm -vacuum ultraviolet ray excitation. The Mn-doped $Mg_2SnO_4$ phosphor exhibited high emission intensity with the spectrum centered at 500nm wavelength. It was explained that the green emission in $Mg_2SnO_4$:Mn phosphor has originated from energy transfer from $^4T_1$ to $^6A_1$ of $Mn^{2+}$ ion at tetrahedral site of the spinel structure. The $Mn^{2+}$ ion concentration exhibiting the maximum emission intensity under the excitation of 147nm-vacuum ultraviolet ray was 0.25mol%. And the decay time of the phosphor was shorter than 10ms.
