  • This study analyzed the data from Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to examine factors associated with help-seeking among Korean adults with suicidal ideation. The results from binary logistic regression analysis showed that being currently married, low family income, and absence of diagnosed clinical depression were negatively associated with seeking help. Gender, age, education, the PHQ total score, and health insurance did not significantly change the probability of seeking help. The future suicide help-seeking intervention should focus on those who are less likely to seek help.

Methods: A total of 157 elders from Gyeongju city, who had attended senior centers in, were enrolled to answer questionnaires including the Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form-Korea and the Scale for Suicidal Ideation. Data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0K for Windows, and included t-test, Pearson correlation, and a three-step hierarchical multiple regression analyses. Results: Using the hierarchical regression analyses for predicting the elderly's suicidal ideation, male gender and social group variables were entered as predictors in the first step(adjusted $R^2$=0.107, P<0.05). Pain, ADLs, family support variables were not entered in the second step. Depression variable was the only predictor in the third step(adjusted $R^2$=0.384, P<0.001). Conclusions: Although this study confirmed the impact of depression on the suicidal ideation, elderly with risk factors including male gender and social isolation should receive a special attention from community health care professionals.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate individual- and community-level factors on suicidal ideation and suicide attempt among Korean adults. Methods : This study was conducted on 225,965 adults collected through data from the 2021 Community Health Survey and the Korean Statistical Information Service (KOSIS). The general characteristics, suicidal behavior (e.g., suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts), and community-level characteristics of the study subjects were analyzed using frequency (%) and mean (standard deviation). The effects on individual- and community-level factors on suicidal ideation and suicide attempts was analyzed using multilevel logistic regression models. Results : The community-level factor associated with suicidal ideation was unmet health care (Odds Ratio [OR]=1.053, 95% CI=1.035-1.071), and the community-level factor associated with suicide attempt was the aging rate (OR=1.015, 95% CI=1.001-1.030). Regarding health-related variables, the individual-level factors associated with suicidal ideation were stress status (OR=9.388, 95% CI=8.629-10.213), depressive experience in the past year (OR=6.737, 95% CI=6.454-7.032), and the predominantly individual-level factors associated with suicide attempt were also stress status (OR=5.213, 95% CI=3.699-7.347), and depressive experience in the last one year (OR=13.433, 95% CI: 11.247-16.044). Conclusions : We confirmed individual-level and community-level factors influencing suicidal ideation and suicide attempt. Through these findings, we need to establish suicide prevention policies, considering managing individual-level factors such as stress and depression as well as community-level factors such as unmet health care.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the path that the elderly discrimination experiences and sense of loss lead to suicidal ideation by verifying the influence of the elderly's discrimination experience on suicidal ideation and the mediating effect of sense of loss. To this end, questionnaire a survey was conducted on 400 elderly people aged 65 years or older who used 10 elderly welfare centers using stratified sampling of 31 cities, counties, and districts in Gyeonggi-do. Additionally, a total of 380 samples were finally analyzed excluding dishonest responses. As a result of the study, first, the more individual and social discrimination experiences, which are sub-factors of the elderly discrimination experience, increased suicidal ideation. Second, individual discrimination experiences were found to has a static effect on suicidal ideation through partial mediation of sense of loss. Third, the experience of social discrimination showed a static effect on suicidal ideation by perfect mediating the sense of loss. Therefore, it was found that the sense of loss acts as a risk factor for the elderly's suicidal ideation. Based on the research results, the urgent need for institutional supplementation to prevent the elderly's social discrimination experiences was suggested, and practical implications for preventing elderly suicide by resolving the sense of loss in the elderly welfare practice field were suggested.

  • The study was conducted to identify related risk factor of elderly's suicidal ideation. This study used a cross-sectional design with secondary analysis of the $6^{th}$ 2013 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Data for 1,201 elderlies who aged over 65 years old from the KNHANES were included. Suicidal ideation, general characteristics, physical health, psychological health, EuroQoL, and health behavior were measured. Chi-square test, t-test, and multiple logistic regression were used to analyze this data through the SPSS win 22.0 program. In the results, 7.7% of the elderly had suicidal ideation. The odds ratios of suicidal ideation were significantly higher among those with restriction of activity (OR=1.31, CI=1.40~3.82), those with depression (OR=4.44, CI=1.66~7.40), and those with high levels of stress (OR=9.24, CI=3.48~24.5). Therefore, the activity level, depression level, and stress level need to be regularly assessed in order to prevent suicidal ideation among the elderly.
