崔基哲박사의 약력 및 업적

  • 우리 나라 생물학계의 원로 중의 한분인 서울대학교 사범대학 교수 최기철 박사의 회갑을 충심으로 축하합니다. 최박사는 1910년 10월 16일 충청남도 대전시에서 탄생했으며, 1931년에 당시 서울에 있던 경성사범학교 연습과를 졸업하셨읍니다. 선생께서는 그 당시부터 생물학에 각별한 취미와 관심을 가지고, 정열을 기우렸으며, 그후 여러 곳에서 교원생활을 하시면서 학문연구에 몰두 했던 것입니다. 우리나라 생물학계의 선배 중에는 졍규적인 고등교육을 받지 못하고 독학으로 노력하여 학문적으로 대성한 분이 몇분 계신데, 우리 최기철 박사도 그 카테고리에 드는 분이라고 하겠읍니다. 선생께서는 늘 정열과 노력으로 일관했으며, 대학 출신 못지않게 학문적인 터전을 닦았던 것입니다. 선생의 공적은 점차로 학계와 당국의 인정을 받게 되어, 1935년에는 일본 문부성 시행인 중학교 교원 검정시험에 합격하셨으며, 1956년에는 우리나라 문교부로부터 대학교수 자격을 획득하였고, 또 1966년에는 서울대학교에서 이학박사의 학위를 받으셨읍니다. 그 동안 여러 차례에 걸쳐 관계국제학술회의에 참석하심은 물론, 1957년에는 미국에 건너가 Peabody 대학과 Vanderbilt 대학에서 자신의 주전공인 동물생태학을 연구하셨으며, 이듬해인 1958년에는 Woods Hole에 있는 세계에서도 가장 유명한 해양생물학 연구소를 두루 시찰하셨읍니다. 또 선생께서는 흥지사 발생인 동물생태학을 비롯하여 16편의 저서 및 학술조사보고서를 세상에 내놓았으며, 한편 한국동물학회지에 발표한 [바지락의 치패에 천공하는 복족류에 관한 연구]를 비롯한 9편의 학술논문을 학계에 발표한바 있읍니다. 끝으로 선생의 가족관계를 살펴 본다면 80이 되신 자당이 아직도 생존해 계시며, 부인과 슬하에 장남 최남석군을 필두로 9남매의 자녀를 거느리고 계신 누구보다도 다복한 분이기도 합니다. 특히 자녀 중에 장남인 남석군은 일찌기 서울대학교 공과대학을 거쳐 미국유학을 하여 공학박사의 학위를 얻고 현재 미국 브르크린 대학교 공과대학 조교수로 있으며, 다음 차남인 신석군은 서울대학교 사범대학 생물학과를 나와 대학원에서 아버지와 같은 전공인 동물태생학을 연구 했고, 현재 충남대학교 전임강사로 있읍니다. 여기 최기철 박사의 회갑을 당하여 선생의 약력과 업적을 소개하여 그간 우리 나라 교육계 및 생물학계에 끼친 공로를 찬양하며, 선생의 앞날에 더욱 다복하실 것을 바라는 바입니다.

Associated Microorganisms and Chemical Composition of Persimmon Pickles (감장아찌의 성분특성 및 관련 미생물)

  • The objectives of this study were to determine the chemical composition of persimmon pickles and microorganisms associated with the manufacture of persimmon pickles. Moisture content was 80.04% and sugar content was 13.72%, but crude ash content was 4.26% which meant some of sodium chloride in soaking solution were permeated into fresh persimmon. Soluble tannin and total vitamin C contents were decreased from 635.45 mg% and 34.53 mg% to 81.04 mg% and 23.76 mg%, respectively. Free sugars contained in persimmon pickles were glucose, fructose and sucrose, 17 kinds of free amino acids were detected including glutamic acid (24.97 mg%), aspartic acid (24.02 mg%) and leucine (22.33 mg%). Microorganisms asociated with the manufacture of persimmon pickles were identified as Bacillus subtilis, B. cereus, B. pumilus, B. thuringiensis, Candida glabrata, C. guilliermondi and Hansenula cnomala, especially C. glabrata was the strain which caused the swelling of vacuum packages of persimmon pickles in retail stores.

THE EFFECT OF XYLITOL AND CARBOHYDRATES ON STREPTOCOCCUS (자일리톨과 탄수화물의 Streptococcus mutans에 대한 효과)

  • Xylitol is a 5-carbons carbohydrate, which can be replaced with sucrose for preventing caries. The replication of Streptococcus mutans and its formation of artificial plaque were studied in the media containing xylitol. The combined effect of xylitol and other carbohydrates on Streptococcus mutans was also studied. The replication of Streptococcus mutans was inhibited according to the increased concentration of xylitol. Streptococcus mutans replicated at the initial stage of incubation in the media containing glucose, fructose or lactose, while replicating from the beginning of incubation in the media containing fructose as combining with xylitol. The formation of artificial plaque by Streptococcus mutans was significantly reduced in the media containing with xylitol and fructose. These results indicated that the replication of Streptococcus mutans was inhibited according to the increased concentration of xylitol, and the formation of artificial plaque by Streptococcus mutans was significantly inhibited in the media containing xylitol and fructose.

Dose-Response Relationship of Micronucleus Frequency in Pollen Mother Cells of Tradescantia (자주달개비 화분모세포 미세핵 생성률의 방사선량-반응 관계)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the radiation dose-response of micronucleus frequencies in Tradescantia pollen mother cells. The number of micronuclei increased in the tetrads as a result of chromosome deletion after irradiation. The maximal frequency of micronuclei showed a good dose-response relationship in the range of dose $0{\sim}50$ cGy. On the basis of the relationship, a dose of 1 cGy results maximally in two additional micronuclei in 100 tetrads. The radiation dose-response relationship of micronucleus occurrence is prerequisite to biological monitoring of radiations. The micronucleus assay can be applied to biological risk assessment of environmental toxicants, and to integrity test of water or soils of interest.

Sap Collection and Major Components of Acer mono for. rubripes Native in Geoje (거제도(巨濟島) 자생(自生) 붉은고로쇠나무의 수액채취(樹液採取)와 주요성분(主要成分))

  • Amounts of sap collected by DBH class and contents of mineral and free sugar in the sap of Acer mono for. rubripes indigenous in Geojedo were investigated. The collectable periods of sap of A. mono for. rubripes were 17 days and the total amount of sap was 193 l from 60 trees. Sap of A. mono for. rubripes were increased with increasing DBH, being 40 l (21 %), 49 l (25%) and 104 l (54%) from small, middle and large diameter tree, respectively. This may be due to increase in crown width and extention of root system. Amounts of sap was affected by temperature fluctuation between day and night. The pH and the contents of solid and sugar in the sap of A. mono for. rubripes were 6.5 and 2.40% and 1.99%, respectively. Free sugar determined in the sap was sucrose with 19.9 g/l, but glucose, fructose and maltose were not detected. The sap of A. mono for. rubripes contained seven kinds of minerals and the prominent minerals were Ca and K with their concentration being 441 mg/l and 383 mg/l, respectively.

Influence of Exogenous Abscisic Acid Concentration on the Coloration of 'Kyoho' Grapes. (Abscisic acid의 처리농도가 포도 '거봉'의 착색에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was carried to investigate the optimum concentration of abscisic acid (ABA) treatment for enhancing fruit coloration of 'Kyoho' grapes. Cluster and berry weights showed a tendency that increased in proportion to concentration of ABA treatment, but were not significant in all treatments. Also, soluble solids and titratable acidity were not significant during fruit development in all treatments. L-phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity showed a tendency that decreased after rapidly increased in all treatments, and was the highest in 1000 mg/l ABA treatment at final harvest. Anthocyanin and total phenolics contents were high in proportion to ABA treatment concentration, and anthocyanin content in 1000 mg/l ABA treatment was 2.5 folds of that in control. Fructose and glucose as soluble sugars were detected, but sucrose was not detected. Both fructose and glucose contents increased during fruit development, but showed little difference in all treatments.

Effect of Emulsion Treatment on the Separation of Quick-Cooking Rice Kernel and the Quality of Reconstituted Rice (즉석건조쌀밥의 건조후 밥알분리 및 품질에 미치는 에멀젼처리 효과)

  • The effect of emulsion treatment on the separation of quick-cooking rice kernel after drying and the quality of reconstituted quick-cooking rice made of a Japonica variety were investigated. Among the several stages of emulsion treatment tested, immersion of cooked rice before drying was the most effective on the separation index. Immersion condition of 3 min at $30^{\circ}C$ was found to be the most desirable. Emulsion composed of 5% soybean oil and 0.5% sucrose fatty acid ester (HLB : 9.5) was found to be the most effective to yield the separation index of 86%. By applying the above mentioned emulsion, the separation index was improved by 30 compared with untreated one. The quality of the quick-cooking rice manufactured by the emulsion treatment was found to be as good as untreated one.

  • 균체가 생산하는 laccase 효소가 다방면으로 이용되면서, 이 효소를 균체로부터 대량으로 생산하고 분리.정제하여야 할 필요성이 대두되고 있다. 아울러 이 효소의 활성을 유도하기 위한 inducer 로서 2,5-xylidine 이 주로 사용되고 있는바, 이 xylidine 의 유독성이 인정되면서 사람에게 독성을 주지 않는 환경친화적 inducer의 검색이 필요하게 되었다. 본 연구에서는 백색부후균 Cerrena unicolor가 분비하는 laccase 효소의 유도를 위한 inducer로서 ferulic acid를 사용하였으며, 균체로부터 생산 및 분리된 laccase 효소의 정제특성을 구명코자 하였다. 본효소(constitutive enzyme)로서 I 및 II를, ferulic acid를 inducer로 사용한 경우 inducing 효소 III을 분리.정제하였다. 본 효소 I 및 II의 Michaelis 정수는 각각 737 M, 716 M 이었고, inducing효소 III은 167 M 로서, 기질에 대한 높은 친화성을 보여주고 있다. 분자량도 각각 65 kD, 63 kD 였으며, inducing효소 III은 59 kD 였다. 두효소 모두 15-19%의 당 및 단백질분자당 4M의 동(Cu)을 함유하고 있었다. 정제효율은 효소 I 및 II가 10.1%, 9.4% 였으며, III은 3.2% 였다. 모든 효소의 최적 pH 는 5.5였으며, 최적온도는 비교적 높은 $40^{\circ}C$였다.

  • Experiments were conducted to find out the optimum seeding rate and amounts of fertilizer application for seedling growth of five for machine transplanting. Number of leaves of seedlings increased as seeding rate decreased, but there was no significant differences in leaf number among fertilizer levels. At a seeding rate higher than 100g/box. number of leaves was less than 4.5, but more than five leaves were developed at a seeding rate of 50g/box.

  • 새로운 항치매성 건강식품을 개발하기 위해 아세틸콜린에스터레이즈(AChE)를 강력하게 저해하는 추출물을 곡류와 두류의 다양한 추출물로부터 선발한 후 최적 추출 조건을 조사하였다. 추출물 중 수수 메탄올 추출물이 63.4%의 가장 높은 AChE 저해 활성을 보였다. 수수를 80% 메탄올로 $40^{\circ}C$에서 12시간 추출했을 때 최대의 AChE 저해 활성을 나타내었다. AChE를 저해하는 수수 메탄올 추출물의 영양성과 생리 기능성을 조사하였다. 메탄올 추출물은 유리당으로 고형물 100 g당 4.78 g의 포도당과 4.13 g의 자당 및 0.97 g의 과당을 함유하였다. 또한, 수수 메탄올 추출물의 고형물 100 g에 linoleic acid 273.82 mg, oleic acid 215.65 mg, palmitic acid 122.03 mg, stearic acid 4.96 mg을 함유하고 있었고, 주요 유기산으로 주석산 27.45 mg, 말론산 15.43 mg, 사과산 9.94 mg이 메탄올 추출물 1 g에 함유되어 있었다. 수수 메탄올 추출물은 항치매 활성 외에도 콜레스테롤 합성을 저해하는 HMG-CoA reductase 저해 활성이 50.2%이었고, 항산화 활성은 56.1%를 보였다.
