Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify, describe, and understand the meaning of experiences by clarifying the structure of the coping experience of end-of-life care(EOLC) experienced by long-term care hospitals(LTCHs) nurses'. Methods: Data were gathered from 16 nurses who had been working at LTCHs in Korea through one-on-one interviews and the data were analyzed by Colaizzi's phenomenological method. Results: It was structured and identified into 3 categories and 15 theme clusters. The emergent 3 categories were 'Long-term care hospitals nurses' attitudes towards for end-of-life care', 'End-of-life care stress', 'Coping with end-of-life care'. Conclusion: There is a need for practical and systematic education for LTCHs nurses' to positively change end-of-life care attitudes and reduce and prevent end-of-life care stress. In addition, it is suggested to operate programs that can improve coping skills or programs such as expert counseling.
Purpose: The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurses' experience in caring for infants who are approaching death and to identity the meaning and structure of their experiences. Methods: The participants were eight nurses who had experience in caring for these infants. In-depth interviews were performed from December, 2012 to February, 2013 until data were fully saturated. Collected data were analyzed using Colaizzi's method. Results: Four theme clusters were extracted from fifteen themes. The four theme clusters of the NICU nurses' experience in caring for infants who are dying were: 1) Crossroads between life and comfort of infants approaching death, 2) emotional suffering at the death of the infant, 3) adapting and coping with the death of the infant, 4) new expectations for caring for infants who are dying. Conclusion: The results of the study provide useful information in understanding NICU nurses' experience in caring for infants who are dying and establishing effective strategies to support these nurses.
This study was to investigate the social workers' psycho·social experiences and roles during the end-of-life care process in elderly long-term care facilities. As a result of data analysis through in-depth interviews, social workers experienced great exhaustion and burnout due to frequent death experiences during the end-of-life care process, and expressed regret for not being able to provide better service for the deceased and longing for loved ones. And in the event of a sudden death, social workers would undergo criticism and complaints. The main roles of social workers during end-of-life care were to contact and communicate with family members when signs of death appeared and support them after the death. The necessity of standardized manuals and education for end-of-life care, a recharging program and support group to prevent burnout of social workers, and a legal safety net for emergency preparedness and emergency measures were suggested. The necessity of death preparation education, hospice care, and advance medical directive was also emphasized for the dignified death of the elderly.
The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between nurses' spirituality and attitude toward terminal and to provide basic data for enhancement of the quality of terminal care in geriatric hospitals. Data analysis was done with SPSS/WIN 18.0 program and included t-test, ANOVA, scheffe test, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient. Results: The subjects' spirituality was significantly correlated with attitude toward terminal care in geriatric hospital. Conclusion: This study suggests the need for nursing education program and development of a variety of intervention strategies to help them to achieve a positive attitude toward terminal care in terms of geriatric hospital by familiarizing themselves with the concept of spirituality.
This study was a descriptive research study conducted to determine how nursing students' good death awareness and nursing attitudes toward dying patients affect their empathy. The subjects of the study were 155 nursing students, and data were collected using an online survey method. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and multiple regression using the IBM SPSS Statistics 26. Higher attitude toward care of dying (B=.312) had a statistically significant positive effect on empathy capacity (p<.010). The variables that affected nursing students' empathy capacity were end-of-life experiences of relatives (𝛽=.226) and attitude toward care of dying (𝛽=.220). The regression model was statistically significant (F=6.968, p<.001), explained 10.4% of empathy. This study is expected to be used as basic data for the development of programs to strengthen the empathy capacity of nursing students in the future.
Purpose: This study was conducted to examine how nurses' death anxiety and terminal care stress affect their terminal care performance in the clinical setting. Methods: The study enrolled 180 registered nurses with experience of attending dying patients at a university hospital located in Seoul, Korea. Collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA and Pearson's correlation using SPSS 18.0 for Windows. Results: Nurses showed significant differences in the level of death anxiety and terminal care stress as well as terminal care performance by working division, marital status, educational background and hospice training. A significant relationship was found between terminal care stress and terminal care performance. Conclusion: The study results showed that efforts to ease nurses' death anxiety and terminal care stress could improve their terminal care performance. Further study should be conducted to investigate other factors that affect nurses' terminal care performance from various perspectives and develop a terminal care manual which can be used as guidance for nurses in charge of terminal patient care.

Purpose: This study was performed to explore the current state of end-of-life (EoL) care education provided to new interns at two university hospitals. Methods: A questionnaire was given to incoming interns (N=64). The levels of acquired knowledge and experience of clinical observation were measured. Seven areas for self-assessment questions were identified and used to analyze the interns' attitudes towards EoL-related education and practice. Results: On average, participants learned five elements (nine in total) from EoL-related classes and two (seven in total) from clinical observation. The most frequently educated element was how to deliver bad news (96.9%) in the classroom setting and how to control physical symptoms (56.5%) in clinical observation. Less than 20% received training on EoL care communication, including discussion of advanced directives. Compared with participants who had no EoL training, those who had EoL training showed positive attitudes in all seven categories regarding overall satisfaction, interest and preparedness in relation to EoL-care classes and practice. Conclusion: Although interns are responsible for caring of dying patients, their EoL training in classroom and clinical settings was very insufficient. Further research should be conducted to establish an education system that provides sufficient knowledge and training on EoL care.

Currently, the number of Long-Term Care Hospital in Korea is continuously increasing with the increase in the elderly population. Patients admitted to Long-Term Care Hospital are mainly elderly with chronic diseases, and because they are for long-term care, they often die in Long-Term Care Hospital, and the importance of end-of-life care is gradually increasing. In spite of these characteristics Studies on end-of-life care for nurses in Long-Term Care Hospital are mainly quantitative studies, and there is a limit to in-depth understanding of end-of-life care experiences. Therefore, The purpose of this study is to understand the meaning of Long-Term Care Hospital nurses' nursing experienceof end-of-life patients through a phenomenological method, and to describe and understand the meaning of the phenomenon in depth. The subjects of this study were 7 nurses who had worked for more than 6 months at a nursing hospital located in C city. The research method was in-depth interviews, and data were collected from December 2021 to March 2022. The interview date were analyzed by Giorgi's phenomenological method. As a result of the study, 'nurses' attitude toward end-of-life care', 'ambivalence toward life prolongation', 'reality of end-of-life care in Long-Term Care Hospital', and 'reflection on life and death' were found. Therefore, it is thought that End-of-life nursing Continuing educationand interventional education programs should be developed to change Long-Term Care Hospital nurses' end-of-life care attitudes and improve coping skills.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe and understand the meaning and the structure of subjective experiences of intensive care nurses with death of patients with do-not-resuscitate (DNR) orders. Methods: Data were collected from eight intensive care nurses at general hospitals using individual in-depth interviews and analyzed by phenomenological research method. Results: The nurses' experiences were grouped into four theme clusters: 1) ambiguity of death without correct answer, 2) a dilemma experienced at the border between death and work, 3) the weight of death that is difficult to carry and 4) death-triggered reflection of life. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop accurate judgment criteria for DNR, detailed regulations on the DNR decision process, guidelines and education on DNR patient care for nurses. It is also needed to develop an intervention program for DNR patients' families.
Purpose: We conducted a descriptive correlational study to determine a relationship between nurses' awareness of good death and attitudes toward terminal care, which in turn could be used as basic data for improvement of the quality of terminal care at geriatric hospitals. Methods: From April 3, 2013 through April 22, 2013, data were collected from 230 nurses working at geriatric hospitals. Results: Nurses' attitudes toward terminal care showed no significant correlation with awareness of good death, but it was positively correlated with a sense of closeness, a subfactor of awareness of good death. There was negative correlation between emotions regarding a deathbed, a subfactor of attitudes of nurses in charge of terminal patients, and awareness of good death. We found positive correlation between terminal care performance and awareness of good death. Conclusion: This study warrants the need for nursing education catered to characteristics of geriatric hospitals and development of diverse intervention strategies to help them to attain a positive attitude toward death by familiarizing themselves with the concept of good death and enhancing job satisfaction.
