Purpose: Eye movements and fixation ability are an important procedure to obtain external information and essential means of clear vision. The purpose of this study was to determine the reading performance such as reading time and number of fixations when random text was viewed at varying distances. Methods: Twenty two presbyopes were participated. All subjects were screened for their suitability to participate in the study by clinical examination, and none of the participants had previously worn contact lenses and no previous experience of wearing any types of presbyopic vision correction except single vision. The reading time and number of fixations were recorded using eye tracker while each subjects was waring four vision corrections which included single vision for distance (SV), bifocal spectacle lenses (BIF), progressive addition lenses (PAL), and monovision (MV). The reading material was presented at distance and near distance. Results: Reading time and number of fixations for near stimulus were significantly different among vision correction used in this study (p<0.001). In particular, wearing SV required longer reading time and produced longer fixation duration for near text. However, reading distance text was similarity performed across vision corrections tested and there was no statistical difference found for either reading time and number of fixations. Conclusions: Wearing presbyopic vision correction is advantageous for reading task of near stimuli, but not having near correction such as wearing SV could result in longer reading time and higher number of fixation due to lacks of accommodative ability for near task. For the future studies, it would be interesting to examine the performance of reading both at adapted and unadapted stages as examining only unadapted wearers was limitation of this study.
It is very important for Academic purpose Korean leaner to understand main ideas and overall context of texts. In order to understand the overall context and mail ideas of text, learners need output task, ways to perform what they are learning, such as retelling. That would help them to realize that there is a gap between what they have understood and what they can actually speak or write. These out activities help learners comprehend the text more efficiently, while at the same time raising their confidence level. The purpose of this study was to develop an education plan to improve reading comprehension ability by using retelling activity. To achieve the purpose of the study, retelling activity, which makes it easier to take an integrated approach to language function and is considered to be relatively effective, was utilized because of the characteristics of retelling activity education instead of teacher-centered education methods.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in children's reading abilities of environmental print and phonological awareness by children's age and the relationship between children's reading abilities of environmental print and phonological awareness. The subjects were 90 children, 3 to 4 years of age. The Children's Reading Abilities of Environmental Print Scale (CRAEPS) developed by Son (2012) and Phonological Awareness Scale (PAS) revised by Choi (2007) were used to measure children's reading ability of environmental prints and phonological awareness. The results of this study were as follows: Firstly, 4-year-olds performed significantly better than 3-year-olds on the environmental print reading tasks. Also, 4 year-olds scored significantly higher than 3-year-olds in syllable counting, syllable deletion, and phoneme substitution. Secondly, children's scores on the environmental print reading tasks were positively correlated with phonological awareness. In other words, the 3-year-olds who could read environmental prints better got higher scores in syllable counting and the 4-year-olds who could read environmental prints better got higher scores in syllable counting, syllable deletion, and phoneme substitution.
The goal of this study is to look deeper into a reading education method for improving cognitive abilities of petty officer majoring students in community college level. Lack of the cognitive ability through the passing status of reading information processing highly can cause a problem for understanding information of context. Therefore, this study redefines the reading step to improve the cognitive ability. also, it sets up progress steps; material selection - learning - inspection - practice based on the cognitive abilities. To achieve those goals, there are two major ways. The first, setting up a proper reading assignment that is suitable for petty officer major students in community college level is a key step for this study. Second, the instructor leads the students to judge their own cognitive ability objectively by using a portfolio curriculum which contains a checking list of the portfolio, structuring a curriculum based on weekly achievements, self-checking, and setting up a direction of practice. The two presented ways are the most effective ways to develop students' cognitive ability based on continuous reading and checking. For the last, the study mentions a proposal for further tasks in this field of the study.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of implementing semantic mapping reading strategy in the science class on high school students' science text reading ability. 3rd grade students of science core high school in a small and medium-sized city participated in this study for a semester. Texts with socio-scientific issues and chemistry subjects were used to implement semantic mapping reading strategy in the science class. To investigate the changes in students' science text reading ability, experimental group students participated in the pre-reading and post-science reading ability tests and the results were analyzed. The results of this study showed that the mean of the science reading ability test score of experimental group was significantly higher than that of the comparison group. We found that drawing a semantic mapping before solving a reading task made it easier for students to find information and infer meaning from text. It can be seen that students also recognize that the semantic mapping is helpful in understanding the text because it is easy to understand the relationship between concepts by visualizing the content of the text, and can connect their background knowledge with the text content.
This study handled underachievement issue of gifted students by developing and validating educational programs as a solution, or relief, of their academic underachievement problems. The proposed educational program was designed to enhancing reading comprehension ability of gifted students with underachievement. Based on comprehensive literature review, this study found that key issues of underachievement have to do with learning strategy, and also that learning strategy was established as 'reading comprehension strategy.' Considering diverse reading comprehension models and strategies suggested by preceding studies, the reading comprehension strategy program in Korean was customized for underachieving gifted students on the middle school level. The effectiveness of the reading comprehension strategy program as a solution to underachievement of gifted students was explored by applying the developed program to 36 identified students after school twice a week for 6 weeks, conducting pre- and post-tests that were selected to measure their reading comprehension abilities, collecting their academic achievement data before and after the intervention by this study, and interviewing students. As the results of this study, reading metacognition ability, reading comprehension skills, and school grades of gifted students with underachievement were meaningfully improved as a group. On the individual level, 12 identified students, exactly one third of the whole group of underachieving gifted students, showed so improved academic achievement as we can say they overcame underachievement based on the Supplee's definition.
The purpose of this study is to examine the balanced English approach program on five-year-old children's English reading and writing ability. For this study, two classes consisting of five-year-old children in HATBEAT kindergarten in D city were selected. One class was designated as the experimental group and the other as the control group. The balanced English approach program was performed on the experimental group but not on the control group. The balanced English approach program was carried out for 8 weeks. The experimental procedures were in the order of pre-test, the experimental treatment, and post-test. The result of the experiment was evaluated by comparing the pre-test and post-test results. Analysis of data was performed by ANCOVA. The result of the study are as follows. First, in the English reading ability, the experimental group was more enhanced than the control group. Also, for sub-factors of English reading such as alphabet and English word reading ability, the experimental group was more enhanced than the control group. However, in the English book reading ability as a sub- factor of the English reading, there was not much difference in the result between the experimental group and the control group. Second, in the English writing ability, the experimental group were more enhanced than the control group.
In an effort to investigate the effects of chatbots on English listening and reading skills, 46 college students participated in the current study. Participants consisted of first-year students who enrolled in an English class at a university in South Korea. They were randomly divided into two groups: one experimental group (n=24) and one control group (n=22). During 16 weeks, the experimental group engaged in chats with a chatbot, named Elbot, while the control group did not. There were pre- and post-tests to confirm the effects of the chatbot usage. Major findings are as follows: First, participants in both groups significantly improved listening and reading skills. On the post-listening test, however, the experimental group showed more improvements. Their listening proficiency level improved from intermediate to advanced level after engaging in chat with the chatbot. Limitations and implications for theory and practice are discussed at the end.

Objectives:Developmental reading disorder is a condition which manifests significant developmenttal delay in reading ability or persistent errors. About 3-7% of school-age children have this condition. The purpose of the present study was to validate the diagnostic values of Word/Nonword Reading Test and Letter-Symbol Discrimination Task for the purpose of overcoming the caveats of Basic Learning Skills Test. Methods:Sixty-three reading-disordered patients(mean age 10.48 years old) and sex, age-matched 77 normal children(mean age 10.33 years old) were selected by clinical evaluation and DSM-IV criteria. Reading I and II of Basic Learning Skills Test, Word/Nonword Reading Test, and Letter-Symbol Discrimination Task were carried out to them. Word/Nonword Reading Test:One hundred usual highfrequency words and one hundred meaningless nonwords were presented to the subjects within 1.2 and 2.4 seconds, respectively. Through these results, automatized phonological processing ability and conscious letter-sound matching ability were estimated. Letter-Symbol Discrimination Task:mirror image letters which reading-disordered patients are apt to confuse were used. Reliability, concurrent validity, construct validity, and discriminant validity tests were conducted. Results:Word/Nonword Reading Test:the reliability(alpha) was 0.96, and concurrent validity with Basic Learning Skills test was 0.94. The patients with developmental reading disorders differed significantly from normal children in Word/Nonword Reading Test performances. Through discriminant analysis, 83.0% of original cases were correctly classified by this test. Letter-Symbol Discrimination Task:the reliability(alpha) was 0.86, and concurrent validity with Basic Learning Skills test was 0.86. There were significant differences in scores between the patients and normal children. Factor analysis revealed that this test were composed of saccadic mirror image processing, global accuracy, mirror image processing deficit, static image processing, global vigilance deficit, and inattention-impulsivity factors. By discriminant analysis, 87.3% of the patients and normal children were correctly classified. Conclusion:The patients with developmental reading disorders had deficits in automatized visuallexical route, morpheme-phoneme conversion mechanism, and visual information processing. These deficits were reliably and validly evaluated by Word/Nonword Reading Test and Letter-Symbol Discrimination Task.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between reading ability and binocular functions, based on self tests through surveys. The possibility of the reading ability tests used in this study as a tool on the determination about vision efficiency was also evaluated. Methods: Through reading ability tests about 138 university students, 72 students (52.2%) of them were first selected. Through self tests about dyslexia and light sensitivity, 38 students (52.7%) of the first selected students were secondly selected, whose extents are more than 3. Binocular tests were carried out about three groups (high, middle, low) of these secondly selected students. Tests about NPCs, distance and near phoria, amplitude of accommodation, fusional vergence, AC/A ratio, accommodative facility, and vergence facility were performed as binocular tests. Results: NPCs were closest to eyes at high groups. Fusional vergence, AC/A ratio, accommodative facility, and vergence facility of high group showed higher than other groups. The phoria at middle group showed higher than other groups. Conclusions: We found that reading ability and some of binocular functions were closely related. Therefore, vision training, associated with insufficiencies of binocular functions, is expected to improve reading ability.
