  • A multicast traffic’s feature is the function of providing a point to multipoints cell transmission, which is emerging from the main function of ATM switch. However, when a conventional point-to-point switch executes a multicast function, the excess load is occurred because unicast cell as well as multicast cell passed the copy network. Additionally, due to the excess load, multicast cells collide with other cells in a switch. Thus a deadlock that losses cells raises, extremely diminishes the performance of switch. An input queued switch also has a defect of the HOL (Head of Line) blocking that less lessens the performance of the switch. In the proposed multicast switch, we use shared memory switch to reduce HOL blocking and deadlock. In order to decrease switch’s complexity and cell's processing time, to improve a throughput, we utilize the method that routes a cell on a separated paths by traffic pattern and the scheduling algorithm that processes a maximum 2N cell at once in the control part. Besides, when cells is congested at an output port, a cell loss probability increases. Thus we use the Output Memory (OM) to reduce the cell loss probability. And we make use of the method that stores the assigned memory (UM, MM) with a cell by a traffic pattern and clears the cell of the Output memory after a fixed saving time to improve the memory utilization rate. The performance of the proposed switch is executed and compared with the conventional policy under the burst traffic condition through both the analysis based on Markov chain and simulation.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study is to present a retrospective review of patients who had a sudden onset of facial palsy after trauma and who underwent facial nerve decompression. Methods: The cases of 25 patients who had traumatic facial palsy were reviewed. Facial nerve function was graded according to the House-Brackmann grading scale. According to facial nerve decompression, patients were categorized into the surgical (decompression) group, with 7 patients in the early decompression subgroup and 2 patients in the late decompression subgroup, and the conservative group(16 patients). Results: The facial nerve decompression group included 8 males and 1 female, aged 2 to 86 years old, with a mean age of 40.8. In early facial nerve decompression subgroup, facial palsy was H-B grade I to III in 6 cases (66.7%); H-B grade IV was observed in 1 case(11.1%). In late facial nerve decompression subgroup, 1 patient (11.1%) had no improvement, and the other patient(11.1%) improved to H-B grade III from H-B grade V. A comparison of patients who underwent surgery within 2 weeks to those who underwent surgery 2 weeks later did not show any significant difference in improvement of H-B grades (p>0.05). The conservative management group included 15 males and 1 female, aged 6 to 66 years old, with a mean age of 36. At the last follow up, 15 patients showed H-B grades of I to III(93.7%), and only 1 patient had an H-B grade of IV(6.3%). Conclusion: Generally, we assume that early facial nerve decompression can lead to some recovery from traumatic facial palsy, but a prospective controlled study should and will be prepared to compare of conservative treatment to late decompression.

  • Most propionic acid is added to food (especially breads) as preservatives and its form is sodium or calcium salt. Most countries admitted propionic acid as food preservatives but a tolerance limit is somewhat different according to countries. Recoveries of the official method for propionates reported as 50.0~60.0%. Accordingly new rapid determination method for propionates was developed using formic acid added sodium chloride (5 g) and ether (formic acid : ether = 1 : 2) as the extraction solvent to improve the official method with the complex processes. Propionate was dissolved from the samples with formic acid omitting steam distillation and ion exchange procedure. Then propionate in formic acid was extracted with ether and sodium chloride again. A $1\;{\mu}l$ aliquot of the filtrate of ether was analyzed by gas chromatograph. Recoveries from sample A and B fortified with propionic acid sodium salt were 85.0 % and 90.0 %, respectively.

  • In this study, the level of migration of 5 kinds of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) (toluene, styrene, ethylbenzene, isopropylbenzene and n-propylbenzene) into distilled water from polystyrene-made food containers was measured using Purge&Trap combined with GC/FID. The contents of the VOCs which have regulatory limits in Korea food code only for material specification were determined under three exposure conditions which were 30 min at $60^{\circ}C$, 30 min at $95^{\circ}C$ and actual situation of instant noodle intake. The calibration curve of 5 compounds showed good linearity ($^r2$ = 0.9976~0.9995) within the concentration range of 1~50 ng/mL. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were validated at range of 0.041~0.092 and 0.135~0.304 ng/mL, respectively. The average migration contents of 5 compounds were below 5 ng/mL except for styrene. The average contents of styrene were highly detected at $95^{\circ}C$ for 30 min exposure (52.71 ng/mL). Under actual condition at instant noodle intake, the average contents of styrene was 17.23 ng/mL. The results demonstrated that the migration rate of VOCs was related to storage temperature and time.

  • To assess accurate methods for measuring sulfur dioxide residue in pickles, the acid distillation HPLC-UV method and Monnier Willams modified method were examined. By the acid distillation HPLC-UV method, sulfites released from pickles by acid distillation were absorbed in 1% triethanolamine solution and detected as sulfite ion by HPLC with UV monitoring at 240nm. An anion exchange column was employed with 1.8mM $Ma_2CO_3-1.7mM\;NaHCO_3$ solution as a mobile phase, $84.0{\sim}91.7%$ of sulfite added to pickled radish were recovered. Total sulfite levels from 48 kinds of pickles analyzed by acid distillation HPLC-UV was compared with those analyzed by the Monnier Williams modified method. The Monnier Williams modified method showed higher levels of sulfur dioxide than the acid distillation HPLC-UV method due to the presence of volatile acids in pickles. The concentration of sulfur dioxide was in the range of $N.D{\sim}173.05ppm$ in pickled radish and over 30ppm of sulfur dioxide from 3 samples by the acid distillation-HPLC-UV method.

  • In this paper, we present a speech-based Environmental Control System(ECS) and its application. In the concrete, an ECS using the speech recognition and an portable wheelchair lift control system with the speech synthesis are developed through the simulation and the embodiment. The developed system apply to quadriplegic man and we evaluate the result of physical effect and of mental effect. Speech recognition system is constructed by real time modules using HMM model. For the clinical application of the device, we investigate the result applied to 54-years old quadriplegic man during a week through the questionnaires of Beck Depression Inventory and of Activity Pattern Indicator. Also the motor drive control system of potable wheelchair lift is implemented and the mechanical durability is tested by structural analysis. Speech recognition rate results in over 95% through the experiment. The result of the questionnaires shows higher satisfaction and lower nursing loads. In addition, the depression tendency of the subject were decreased. The potable wheelchair lift shows good fatigue life-cycle as the material supporting the upper wheelchair and shows the centroid mobility of safety. In this paper we present an example of ECS which consists of real-time speech recognition system and potable wheelchair lift. Also the experiments shows needs of the ECS for korean environments. This study will be the base of a commercial use.

  • We measured and compared the partition coefficients and absorption levels of preservative phenoxyethanol (PE), antimicrobial ethylhexylglycerin (EG) and UV-filters widely used in cosmetic products and more specifically evaluated the relative absorption level of PE depending on various packaging materials. The resulting partition coefficients of 11 UV filters in relation to PE and EG displayed EG with a relatively higher partition coefficients. The partition coefficients of Tinsorb M and Solaveil CT434 were also high. Among the UV-filter ingredients with EG absorption levels exceeding 40 % were Gransil PSQ, UV Titan M 160 and Micro $TiO_2$ MT 100 TV, whereas Gransil PSQ and Scadder showed PE absorption levels above 40 %. In addition, we confirmed that PE had displayed an absorption level of 7 ~ 8 % as a result of 1 month-long exposure to packaging material polyoxymethylene. This extensive research illustrates the possibility of producing the most potent preservative contents based on studying the relative compatibility between UV-filters and preservatives and selecting the adequate preservatives to be used. Furthermore, preservative level can also decline with passage of time depending on the type of packaging material used.

  • This study was conducted to look at the antimicrobial synergistic effect of blended oil into the target skin flora. The essential oils used in antimicrobial test were 100% eucalyptus (EU), lemon (LE), lavender (LA) and four blended oils, EU+LE, LE+LA, EU+LA, and, EU+LE+LA in ratio of 1:1 and 1:1:1 respectively. As a result, LE showed the highest, LA showed the lowest antimicrobial activity among single oil group. In blended oil group, antimicrobial activity of the EU + LA showed significantly increasing effect than the sum of the antimicrobial activity of the single oil. However, the antimicrobial effects of the blend of three oils did not show any synergistic effect. This result showed that the interaction between the chemical components constituting the oil than the number of blended oil seems more significant on the synergistic effect. Therefore, blending essential oil based on scientific evidence becomes more necessary in the future.
