Diarrhea is one of the main disorders which cause the highest level mortality of the post-weaning economic animal. Beech-wood creosote has been used as a traditional anti-diarrheic medicament for a long time. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of Beech-wood on growth performance and intestinal microbiota in rats. Twelve 4-week-old rats were randomly assigned to one of four dietary groups and fed a basal diet supplemented with none (CON), 0.5% apramycin (ANTI), 0.4% creosote (Creo 0.4), or 0.8% creosote (Creo 0.8) for 4 weeks following 1 week of adaptation period to the respective diet. Average daily gain was not influenced by the dietary treatment whereas average daily feed intake was greatest for the Creo 0.8 group. In the intestinal microbiota at the level of the phylum, the percentage of Firmicutes bacteria decreased but Bacteroidetes increased in the Creo 0.8 group vs. Control, which resulted in a decreased F/B ratio for the former (p<0.05). Moreover, the percentage of Lachnospiraceae was greater at the level of the family for the Creo 0.8 group than for Control, but the percentages of Turicibacter and Clostridium disporicum were less in the former (p<0.01) at the genus and species levels, respectively. Collectively, the present results indicate that dietary supplementation of creosote increases the feed intake and also influence the intestinal microbiota in rats.
This study was carried out to develope an antibiotic substitute with some feed additive ingredients; activated charcoal, microbial products(Saccharomyces cerevisiae), sodium bentonite and pyroligneous. Sixty Holstein male calves(control 30 and tested 30 calves) were assigned to one of two diets, control(containing commercial antibiotic) and treatment diet (containing antibiotic substitute) with three replicates(10 calves each). The experiment were carried out for 30 days. The daily weight gains were similar between control(1.01kg/d) and treatment groups(1.01kg/d), however feed requirement were lower for treatment calves (2.80kg) than control calves (3.24kg) (P<0.05). Also calves were more health for treatment calves than control calves for diarrhea and respiratory diseases occurrences. The ammonia concentration of feces were lower for treatment calves(2.67 ppm) than for control calves(6.33 ppm) (P<0.05). No statistical difference were found in blood substances between control and treatment calves(P>0.05). In conclusion, the calve performances were improved by substitute without commercial antibiotic additive.

The purpose of the this experiment was to evaluate taurine supplementation on growth performance backfat thickness and cholesterol and taurine concentrations in finishing pigs. A total of forty eight pigs (71.11$\pm$0.14kg initial body weight) were used in a growth assay. The control diet (CON) was corn-soybean meal based diet, whereas the other dietary treatments were supplemented by additional 0.3 and 0.6% of taurine into the control diet (TAU 0.3 and TAU 0.6, respectively). As the addition of taurine in the diets increased average daily weight gain (Quadratic effect, p<0.05) and gain/feed (Quadratic effect p<0.02) were improved. Total - cholesterol concentrations of serum (Linear effect, p<0.04) and liver (Linear effect, p<0.01) decreased with increasing taurine. As the addition of taurine in the diets increased taurine concentrations of plasma (Linear effect, p<0.01), liver (Linear effect, p<0.01) and boston butt (Linear effect, p<0.01) were increased. In conclusion, finishing pigs fed the dietary taurine had improved growth ratio and decreased total-cholesterol concentrations of serum and liver. Also, finishing pigs fed the dietary taurine had increased taurine concentrations of plasma and boston butt.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of ruminally inserted artificial fiber (RIAF; polymerized fibrous implements) on growth performance, feed intake and carcass characteristics of Hanwoo steers. Thirty six steers averaging $368.3\pm20.3kg$ were randomly assigned into three groups: control group, the ruminal insertion of three pieces (T1), and five pieces (T2) of RIAF. Average daily gain, feed intakes and conversions among treatments were similar. Numbers of rumen villi were higher in RIAF treatment (T1 and T2) groups than control group, but they were not significant (p>0.05). The length of villi were significantly longer in T2 than control group (p<0.05). Fecal weight tended to decrease in T1 compared with the control group (p>0.05). There was no differences on carcass traits inc1uding longissmus muscle area, back fat thickness, marbling score, meat color, and fat color among treatments.

This study was conducted to compare among bull, steer and heifer on growth performance, blood composition and carcass traits according to fattening phase in Hanwoo. 12 month of aged 4 bulls ($339.8{\pm}18.5kg$), 4 steers ($309.8{\pm}13.2kg$), and 3 heifers ($290.0{\pm}16.7kg$) were allocated in the stalls with individual feeding system during 20 months. Average daily gain was not different among the treatment groups during early fattening phase, but higher in the bulls and lower in the heifers after mid-fattening phase (p<0.05). The difference of body size by animal groups appeared from 24 month of age, and wither height and body length of Hanwoo heifer were the smallest (p<0.05) among treatment group. But wither height was not difference among treatment groups at 32 month of age. At 12 month of age, concentrations of serum cholesterol, triglyceride, glucose and total protein were higher in the heifers compared to other groups, and serum GPT (Glutamic pyruvic transaminase) was the highest (p<0.05) in the bulls, and serum GOT (Glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase) was the highest (p<0.05) at late fattening phase in the bulls. Meat yield index was similar between the bulls and the heifers, and the lowest (p<0.05) in the steers. Marbling score was significantly higher (p<0.05) in the steers and the heifers than in the bulls, and meat quality was the best in the steers among treatment groups. The results of this experiment might be used as a basal data on difference between gender in revision of Korean feeding standard for Hanwoo.

This study examined the effects of restricted feeding on the growth performance, carcass characteristics, and economic efficiency of finishing pigs for 27 days. A total of 24 finishing pigs (Landrace×Yorkshire×Duroc, average initial body weight of 81.52±1.11 kg) were allotted randomly to two treatments with 12 replicates (one pig per replicate). The experimental treatments were ad libitum feeding (AF), and restricted feeding (RF) with a 10% increase in offered feed than the day before if required. The results showed that the average daily feed intake (ADFI; p<0.001) of the pigs were improved in the RF treatment, but there were no changes in the average daily gain and weight gain to feed intake ratio (G:F). There were no significant differences in carcass weight and backfat thickness. In addition, the total pork price per pig was not affected by RF. Although total feed intake (TFI) and total feed intake cost (TFC) were significantly lower in the RF pigs (p<0.001), the feed cost per 1 kg weight gain (FCG) was similar regardless of the treatments. In conclusion, the RF method may decrease the feed cost due to a lower TFI and TFC.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with condensed molasses soluble (CMS), which has economically benefitted as an alternative ingredient of molasses, on growth performance and meat quality in growing-finishing pigs. A total of 160 cross-bred growing pigs (LY×D) having body weight 27.3±1.78 kg, were allotted to 1 of the 4 treatment groups with 4 replications each, in a completely random block design. The experimental diet consisted of a basal diet (CON), with supplementation of molasses 3% (MOL 3.0), CMS 1.5% (CMS 1.5), and CMS 3% (CMS 3.0) to basal diet. Feed and water were provided ad libitum for 70 days. We observed higher feed intake in the MOL 1.5, CMS 1.5, and CMS 3.0 groups than CON group. The final body weight and weight gain were significantly improved in the CMS 3.0 group (p<0.05), as compared to CON group. Evaluation of the meat quality revealed no significant difference in water holding capacity, heating loss, and pH, among all experiment groups. This study indicates that feeding CMS results in improved growth performance in growing-finishing pigs without deterioration in meat quality, and has the potential to be used as an alternative ingredient of molasses in swine feed.
This study was conducted to examine the effects of supplementing coated vitamin C+E with cottonseed on rumen fermentation and body weight gain, blood metabolites and hormone concentrations in Hanwoo steers fed fermented feedstuff. Experiments were done with two treatment groups, T1 without any supplements and T2 supplemented with coated vitamin C+E and cottonseed. Ruminal pH was lower in T2 than in T1 at 3h after morning feeding (p<0.05), but was higher in T2 than in T1 at 6 and 9h after morning feeding (p<0.05). Ruminal ammonia concentration was higher in T2 than in T1 for 12h after morning feeding (p<0.05). Concentrations of acetate, propionate, butyrate and total-VFA were higher in T2 than in T1 at 3h after morning feeding (p<0.05), but were lower in T2 than in T1 at 9 and 12h after morning feeding (p<0.05). Average daily gain and concentrations of blood metabolites and hormones between T1 and T2 were similar. Results indicate that supplementation of coated vitamin C+E and cottonseed to fermented feedstuff affects on ruminal pH, ammonia and VFA. But it has no influences on body weight gain and concentrations of blood metabolites and hormones in Hanwoo steers.
The objective of this study was to investigate effects of supplementation levels of L-leucine in low-lysine diets on growth performance and meat quality parameters in finishing Duroc pigs. A total of fifty-four pigs with an average initial weight of 74±1kg were allotted to one of three dietary treatments. Each treatment had six replications of three pigs per replicate. The treatment diets included 1)a corn-soybean meal basal diet containing lysine as low as 0.45% (CON), 2) basal diet plus 1.5% L-leucine (LEU 1.5), and 3) basal diet plus 3.0% L-leucine (LEU 3.0). No difference was found in ADG, ADFI and Feed/Gain among treatments. In carcass parameters, dressing precent and back-fat thickness were not affected by L-leucine levels, however, longissimus dorsi area tended to increase by supplementation of L-leucine. Marbling score was significantly higher (P<0.05) in LEU 1.5 and LEU 3.0 than in CON. In meat quality parameters, CIE L* of meat color significantly increased (P<0.05) and crude fat tended to increase by supplementation of L-leucine. However, there was no difference in water holding capacity, cooking loss and shear force value. This study suggests that dietary supplementation of L-leucine in low-lysine diets at the end of finishing period can produce high marbled pork which is preferred by Korean consumers.
Sixty-seven Hanwoo calves were allocated into two groups, 27 spring calves (SC) and 40 fall calves (FC) to investigate the effects of calving season on water and nutrient intakes, growth performance and disease occurrence for the nursing and the post-weaning period. Mean DMI of 3 to 4 mo old FC was lower than that of SC due to low temperature in winter for FC. Water intake was higher for FC (birth to 1 mo old) but lower for SC (2 to 4 mo old) than the others. Mean BW did not differ between SC and FC, but average daily gain for over 2 mo old SC were significantly higher than FC. Diarrhea was mainly observed when the calves were before 60 d old; in particular, it occurred more frequently for less than 30 d old FC compared with SC. The present results indicate that calving season may affect water intake, feed intake and growth performance of Hanwoo calves.
