  • The purpose of this study is to examine the factors that influence the risk perception of reality on social media. Specifically, we analyzed how exposure to risk issues through media and bridging/bonding social capital influence social and personal risk perception. Here, we categorized risk issues into infectious diseases, sex crimes, and radioactive contamination. Findings are as follows. The effect that the type of media and social capital have on risk perception vary depending on the risk issues. Regarding issues of disease and radiation, bridging social capital had a positive effect on social risk perception whereas bonding social capital had a negative effect on personal risk perception. In the case of sex crimes, bonding social capital affected both social and personal risk perception negatively, and an interaction effect between exposures and social capital could be found. The significance of this study is that it considers both media variables from previous studies and social capital variables essential to social media studies and combines the two in order to study the factors that influence risk perception.

  • The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) was held in two phases. The first phase took place in Geneva, December 2003, and the second phase took place in Tunis, November 2005. The objective of the WSIS was to establish the foundations for an Information Society for all, reflecting all the different interests at stake. In relation to, this article explore the vision and paradigm of WSIS. For this, this article review the historical context of International information order and International agreements, and examine the issues of WSIS. As a result, I recognize, It is valuable that the process of WSIS for Global governance was held among governments and other stakeholders, i.e. the private sector, civil society and international organization. In addition, developing countries's voice are deeply reflected on the WSIS. It is noticeable that ITU played key role as coordinator. However, we are anxious that WSIS's vision for Information society have a bias toward Technology determinism. Eventually, this article argue that WSIS discourse is the lack of any serious and critical structural analysis of the politico-economic context.

  • This study examines some cognitive development effects of mass media while testing the relations between mass media consumption and academic achievement and intelligence. In this research, students' television, newspaper, and internet consumption behaviors are used as independent variables which include motivations and magnitude of various content categories' and total consumption of those media. Dependent variables are school courses' test scores and eight intelligence scores based on Howard Gardner's multiple intelligence theory. It was found that media consumption magnitudes of various content categories have the most strong effects on those dependent variables. Each of various media consumption behaviors are found to have different effects according to which variable is dependent. For example, total internet consumption have positive effects on logical-mathematical intelligence but negative effects school achievements. Internet game sight have positive effects on logical-mathematical intelligence but negative effects on musical intelligence. It may be concluded that cognitive development is dependent mainly on what media contents students consume. Media consumption behaviors may have positive effects on some kinds of cognitive development and negative effects on other kinds. In other words, television or internet may have positive effects on academic achievement or intelligence contrary to popular thinking.

  • Social Network Service(SNS), which are an emerging form of political architecture, have been a political means to promote civic engagement and shape pubic opinions on social issues. Along with the influence of SNSs, the governmental control on the dissemination of information over SNSs has increased more and more. It would be ideal if the autonomous governance regulates SNSs which facilitate the networks of the dispersed people. It is the fact, though, that compulsory regulations under which the government controls impose policy and legal restrictions on political expressions. The current study addresses expressive and participatory nature embedded in technological characteristics of SNSs and discusses the problems of content regulations of political expression over SNSs. First of all, it is analyzed that light touch regulation or light touch monitoring should be applied to regulating content on SNSs, particularly political expressions. Constitutional Court proclaimed that legal restrictions on the Internet could infringe basic rights of the people and thus under unambiguous standards, the Doctrine of Clear and Present Danger should be applied to its content. Second, it is found that clarifying the definition of illegality in the application of legal restrictions is necessary to minimize the excessive misleading. Third, it is required that Korea Communications Standards Commission under the government control needs to change in determining the scope of illegal information. In a domestic level, there needs to be safeguards for the protection of the self-regulatory organization such as KISO to guarantee voluntary and autonomous regulatory practices.

  • This study compares the influence of perceived public opinion on Internet users' willingness to expression in real space with in cyber space. In real space, people who perceive their opinions as minority opinion are reluctant to express theirs publicly because of fear of isolation. But cyber space is the anonymous world. So we can expect that people express their opinions freely without the fear of isolation in this space. This study's results provide the support for our expectation. In cyber space, the minority perception group has as the high willingness to expression of their opinion about the abrogation of the Korean Family Rights Raw as the majority perception group. Both of in cyber space and in real space, it is the perception failure group that makes discrepancy in the willingness to expression. This group has the lowest willingness to expression in both space. However, the other predictors of willingness to expression in cyber space are similar to those in real space. Issue salience, Communication apprehension, and Age are the very significant predictors of willingness to expression in both spaces. Sex and ideology are significant predictors in real space, while the frequency of online conversation is the significant predictor in cyber space.

  • This study explored the influence of media use on the audiences' intention to vote as well as their political cynicism in 2012 General elections. I offered three research questions: Research Question 1: What is the impact of media use on the political cynicism? Research Question 2: What are the impact of political intersest, political knowledge, media malaise, political efficacy on the political cynicism? Research Question 3: What is the impact of political cynicism on vote behavior? This study analysed survey data. Based on the results of hierarchial regression analysis and path analysis(AMOS), Internet news use was found to have a significant impact on the political cynicism. But the use of newspaper, TV news were not related to political cynicism. The political efficacy decreased political cynicism effectively, The findings from this study indicate that the relationship between media use and political cynicism is contingent on many factors and that cynicism has a negligible impact on citizen participation. This study also found that persons higher in efficacy were less cynical than low in efficacy. This suggest that cynicism is not always bad thing, that it may in fact be an indication of "an interested and critical citizenry". In conclusion this study showed that we need more in-depth analyses on the relationships among attention to media use, political cynicism and voting behavior to activate political participation.

  • With the advent of the so-called Web 2.0 age, the interconnections of various contents on the web, as well as the user-participatory services from blogs, web-based communities, picture sharing sites, and social networking sites, to the sites for collective knowledge productions, have been further vitalized. As the User Generated Contents(UGCs) are flourishing on the web, they have channeled users' desires for self-expression and social acknowledgement, and yet have created the new kinds of invasion of privacy. This study attempts to look at how the networked individuals' everyday perceptions of privacy have been reconstructed in the age of Web 2.0. By investigating how users have used the UGCs for their sociality on the web and how they have set the boundaries of the private and the public in these public or semi-public disclosures of self-expressions, it has traced the changing perceptions of privacy in everyday communication practices. For this study, it has interviewed Korean youngsters in their 10s and 20s who have grown up with the Internet and have received self-expressions and social communication on the web as everyday activities.
