  • Machine translation (MT) quality assessment is an outstanding problem. In the present situation in which the quality of machine-translated products are far from the user\\`s satisfaction objective evaluation of MT system is a prerequisite to building mutual trust between the users and the vendors stimulating constructive competition among the developers and finally leading to improve the quality of MT systems. Especially there emerges a need for an intensive study on how to evaluate the quality of MT systems from both linguistic and data processing aspects and to secure a steady improvement of the translation quality. With due regard to such points we in this paper present a linguistic evaluation of English-to-Korean machine translation based on a test suite composed of 3.373 sentences that were classified into their linguistic phenomena and complexity levels and report the experimental results made from several commercial MT systems.

  • Bonneh, Cooperman and Sagi (2001) reported that when a global moving pattern was superimposed on high-contrast stationary stimuli, the latter disappeared and reappeared alternatively for periods of several seconds. They named this as motion-induced-blindness. In present research a rotating transparent cylinder composed of white dots was superimposed on a stationary green dots. When observers watched these stimuli wearing a red filter on his/her right eye, the stationary green dots disappeared or reappeared as did in Bonneh et al. The new MIB was observed only when the cylinder rotated and observers weared a red filter. As the luminance contrast of the green dots and that of white dots against the background reduced, and as the number of green dots and white dots decreased, the duration of MIB reduced. Also, the relative depth of the rotating cylinder and the stationary green dots affected the duration of MIB. These results imply that the new MIB is different from the MIB which was observed by Bonneh et al and that the new MIB cannot be explained by binocular rivalry. Further more, the results imply that the later stage of visual information processing is involved in the new MIB.

  • This study investigated whether top-down information influenced the filing-in of the blind spot. Two potential stimuli, which could fill in the blind spot, were presented at the location of the blind spot. When the two stimuli competed against each other to fill in the blind spot with equal probability, the depth-context of one of the stimuli was manipulated. We used an overlapping cue as our depth-context. Participants' task was to report the relative depth of a target presented in the blind spot. We found that the overlapping rue influenced the frequency of reported depth. These results, however, were nor observed in the off blind spot. These results suggest that top-down information such as an overlapping cue influences the filing-in of the blind spot.

  • Three experiments compared two hypotheses on visual selection; perceptual load hypothesis and dilution hypothesis. The perceptual load hypothesis predicts that perceptual load of task-relevant processing determines the level of task-irrelevant processing whereas the dilution hypothesis predicts that competition for limited-capacity attentional resource, not perceptual load, determines the locus of selection. To compare the two hypotheses, we investigated the influence of perceptual load in visual search on response interference by a distractor. Experiment 1 and 2 manipulated perceptual load by the set size of a search array and the colors of a target and non-targets, respectively. As a result, distractor interference decreased with a set size regardless of perceptual load. In order to further test the set size effect, Experiment 3 manipulated the perceptual categories of non-targets and a distractor. The results showed that distractor interference decreased only when non-targets belonged to the same category as a distractor. Overall, the current findings support the dilution hypothesis, but not the perceptual load hypothesis, and provide the evidence that visual selection is constrained by capacity-limited, category-specific attentional resources.

  • The effects of the Fourth Industrial Revolution on manufacturing are spreading by policies to secure or strengthen the manufacturing competitiveness of each country. Strengthening policies on manufacturing necessitate nurturing manpower for smart manufacturing. This study examines the difference of the experts' perception about the educational curriculum to develop the knowledge of Product Lifecycle which covers the whole knowledge area of product development among the knowledge areas aimed at fostering the manpower of smart manufacturing for the $4^{th}$ Industrial Revolution Era. Experts were aware that future developments in digital development, production, and new product development are most important, and that they feel that the whole knowledge area is generally weak. In this study, the implications for the development of educational curriculum in the future are derived from the perception difference of knowledge on Product Lifecycle obtained through expert survey.

  • The rapid increase of ageing population and chronic disease patients cause high medical expenses, and it led an increased attention to digital healthcare. Smart car technologies for healthcare have been developing to recognize drivers' status and predict diverse driving environments. The present study aimed to understand the research trends of autonomous vehicle technologies of Korea and the United States through time series analysis, network analysis, visualization, and comparison between the two countries. The results suggest that cooperative study needs to be done in common research areas such as driver's safety and algorithms. It is also needed to conduct studies and benchmark about liking technique related to part-to-part and vehicle-to-vehicle as America's competitive advantaged area. In the US, diverse approaches of autonomous vehicle technologies have used to consider the characteristics of various age groups and passengers' health status through sensor, while in Korea, only one aspect, older drivers, is mentioned. Implications for the development direction of autonomous vehicle technologies with competitiveness in considering public health, ethics, and driver's safety and convenience are discussed in detail.

  • This study was conducted to raise awareness of careers in the Department of Library and Information Science (LIS) as well as to investigate current awareness and preferences for LIS Department as a strategy to cope with the rapidly changing university environment. To do this, a survey of high school students was carried out, with results as follows: First, awareness about the LIS Department and awareness about librarians in our country's high school students was very low. Second, for possible careers in LIS Department, students responded that a graduate of LIS department was likely to enter the workplace in public libraries, state libraries, university libraries, or school libraries, but they would like to work at broadcasting library, national libraries, school libraries, university libraries, public libraries, or portals. Third, awareness of the career path for the LIS Department showed a very large impact on a preference for the LIS Department. Therefore, students who have heard about the LIS Department are highly probable to select this department when they reach university.

  • With the rapid development of China's economy, the consumption concept of Chinese consumers has changed, and the purchase intention of consumers is also affected by the origin of the brand. The purpose of this study is to help local enterprises gain more competitive advantages in international marketing activities by improving the image of the country of origin. Based on the theory of clue utilization, this paper constructs a theoretical model of the effect of the image of origin on consumers' purchase intention and puts forward the basic hypothesis. The data were collected, analyzed and processed through questionnaire survey and spss23.0. The results showed that: the image of the place of origin and the perceived value had a significant impact on the purchase intention. The image of origin has significant influence on perceived value. Finally, combined with the empirical research results, relevant marketing strategies and Suggestions are provided for local enterprises. At the same time, it also provides some reference for other countries to sell in China.

  • Unlike most other alphabetic languages, letter transposition effect was not found in Korean except in the syllable level and in the morpheme level. This study was conducted in order to investigate the possible reason of the absence of letter transposition effect in Korean. Based on previous letter transposition studies, this study was to investigate on whether syllable frequency is a moderating variable and is responsible for the absence of the letter transposition effect. The results showed that significant letter transposition effect was found when a transposed non-word has high frequency syllable(e.g., 민주화 → 진무화), while such effect was not seen in a transposed non-word with low frequency syllable. The results showed that the letter transposition effect can found in Korean as well. The results also implicate the possibility that syllable frequency is the main moderating variable regarding the Korean letter transposition effect.
