  • Nucleobases and nucleosides in Panax and Acanthopanax genus were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. Chromatography was performed on a reversed-phase system with ${\mu}$ Bondapak $C_{18}$ column using phosphate buffer and 80% methanol gradient. Content of each nucleobase in two genera was about 0-2mg/100g. Panax was contained guanosine and/or adenosine ca. 15-22mg/100g;and Acanthopanax guanosine ca. 3-8mg/100g and adenosine ca. 2-7mg/100g. Considerable amounts of cytidine, uridine, inosine, and thymidine were also detected in two genera.

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to analyze the applicability of dried jujube (Zizypui Fructus) distributed by size as a functional food material and herbal medicine by evaluating its physicochemical characteristics and betulinic acid content. Methods and Results: It was shown that the carbohydrate content of in jujube fruit significantly increased with fruit size; 81.42% for large, 79.83% for medium, and 76.39% for small. Similarly, the dilute ethanol extract content of each group was 72.48% (large), 69.56% (medium), and 64.16% (small). A free sugar analysis indicated that glucose, fructose and sucrose were found in quantitieds proportional to jujube fruit size, the total free sugar values were 68.85%, 63.93%, and 57.37% for large, medium, and small fruit sizes respectively. The betulinic acid content for large, medium, and small fruit was 0.50 mg/g, 0.54 mg/g, and 0.58 mg/g respectively, indicating that smaller jujube contained a higher amount of betulinic acid. Conclusions: It is considered that betulinic acid content could be used as a criteria for jujube fruit quality control.

  • Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) is the most popular herb for medical purpose in Korea. Recently, viral diseases from Korean ginseng showing various degrees of severe mottling, variegation and mosaic symptoms have caused quantity losses of Korean ginseng in a large number of farms. Watermelon mosaic virus (named WMV-gin) was identified as a causal agent for the disease of Korean ginseng. Interestingly, WMV-gin failed to infect both Korean ginseng plant and susceptible host species including cucurbitaceous plants by mechanical inoculation. However, WMV-gin could successfully infect Korean ginseng by transmission of two aphid species (Myzus persicae and Aphis gossypii). It is likely that transmission of WMV-gin was done by both the aphid species during feeding behavior of the two aphid species on Korean ginseng, though the aphids dislike feeding in Korea ginseng. Similarly, a strain of WMV (WMV-wm) isolated from watermelon was transmitted successfully to Korean ginseng plant by the two aphid species, but not by mechanical inoculations. Transmission assays using M. persicae and A. gossypii clearly showed both WMV-gin and WMV-wm were not transmitted from infected Korean ginseng plant to cucurbit species that are good host species for WMV. These results suggest WMV disease occurring in Korean ginseng plant can be controlled by ecological approaches.

  • A radioprotective ginseng protein fraction was obtained from Korean white ginseng powder by the following isolation and purification procedures: Tris-HCI buffer extraction, 70% ammonium sulfate fractionation, CM-rellulosr column chromatography, heat inactivation and Sephadex G-75 column chromatography. This fraction was further purified by Sepharose 4B and Sephadex G-150 column chromatographies. Three fractions obtained were subjected to Native-PAGE and SDS-PAGE using gradient gels and the silver staining method. Molecular weights of the native proteins and their subunits were estimated.

  • A Polyphenolic Compound was isolated from ethyl acetate fraction of Panax ginseng. And the chemical structure of its permethyl ether was suggested as 6-[2(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)ethenyl]-5-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)2,8,10-trimethoxybenzo[a] xanthen-9-one by spectroscopic and chemical degradative evidences.

  • We have compared the panaxadiol and panaxatriol contents of white ginsengs from different countries and red ginseng, by using gas and high-pressure liquid chromatographies. Oleanolic acid contents in various ginseng species were compared by gas liquid chromatography and densitometry. Korean ginseng was found to contain greater amount of panaxadiol and panaxatriol than those of any other countries. The ginsengs from other countries, especially Chikusetzu ginseng, were found to contain far greater amount of oleanolic acid than Korean ginseng.

  • Comparison of the physico-chemical characteristics were investigated among white (WG), fermented (FG) and red ginseng (RG) extracts. We observed maximum contents of extractable solids in FG, but viscosity was lower than other ginseng extracts. The contents of ash and crude protein of FG were higher than those of other ginseng extracts. The contents of carbohydrate were similar, but component Na and cruid lipids were maximum in RG. we extended our study on comparison of the calories among WG, FG and RG. We noticed that comparison of the calories among WG, FG and RG showed insignificant difference.

  • A new glycosyldiglyceride was purified from the ethylacetate soluble fraction of Panax ginseng extract by silica gel column chromatography and chemical structure of the compound was studied with IR, MS, $^{13}C-NMR$ spectroscopy and degradation method. The carbohydrate moiety was identified as ${\beta}-D-glucose$, and palmitic acid occupied about 70% of the acyl groups. This compound was first purified from Panax ginseng.
