인산형 연료전지(PAFC)용 전해질 매트릭스의 제조방법이 전극/매트릭스 계면특성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Preparation Methods of a Matrix Retaining Electrolyte on the Characteristics of a Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cell)

  • The matrices which consisted of SiC whisker, PES(polyesterasulfone) as a binder, span 80(sorbitan monooleate) as a surfactant, TPP(triphenyl phosphate) as a plasticizer and dichloromethane as a solvent, have been prepared by the various methods such as tape casting, rolling, tape cast-coating and roll-coating method. The fuel cells of single stack type using these matrices are characterized by ac impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry technique. A fuel cell using a matrix prepared by the tape cast-coating method shows the best performance of 466.34 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 0.6V because it has the lowest polarization resistance at the interface between electrodes and a matrix due to the largest three phase contact region of gases, catalyst and electrolyte.

  • Preliminary multiple cell stack testing was performed using three-cell stack each electrode having an active area of $100cm^2$. The stack was operated at $190^{\circ}C$, the output power was 32W at 1.8V and maximum power was 69W. It was recorded as the first stack fabricated in Korea and continuous research works on the fabrication of stack, optimization of stack performance and long run tests will be conducted.

  • In order to develop PAFC stack technology using 2.000$cm^3$ electrode-matrix, 10kW stack consisted of 63 single cell was fabricated and operated. The operation installation, and control and data acquision system for the 10kW PAFC stack were designed and equipped. The stack showed the performance of 10kW (275A at 36.5V) and uniform distribution of temperature and voltage between the cells.

  • A 5.9kW phosphoric acid fuel cell(PAFC) power generation system that consists of a reformer, a stack, heat exchangers, an automatic data acquisition and control system was designed, fabricated and analyzed. This system which was firstly fabricated in Korea has been operated for 140 hours with an electricity generation of 684kWh. The PAFC generate electricity in the range of 38-52V and 50-160A and has a typical I-V characteristics of a fuel cell. Using the reformed fuel, the system performance is decreased in some degree due to CO content, compared to using the simulated fuel. At steady state operation condition, the total efficency of this system was 45.2%.

  • Effects of reactant gas flow rates and starvation on phosphoric acid fuel cell performance were studied. As the reactant gas flow rates increased, the cell performance increased and then the cell maintained constant performance. The optimum flow rates of hydrogen, oxygen and air under galvanostatic condition of 150 mA/cm$_{2}$ are found to be 5cc/min cm$_{2}$ 5cc/min cm$_{2}$ and 15cc/min cm$_{2}$ at room temperature and 1 atm, respectively. Also the open circuit voltage of single cell decreased with increasing oxygen flow rate due probably to the decreased probably to the decreased oxygen pressure in the cathode side. Hydrogen and oxygen starvation resulted in voltage loss of about 5mV and 0-2mV, respectively. The voltage loss was independent of starvation time. These results were discussed from point of view of electrochemical reaction of the cell. (author). 9 refs., 8 figs.

  • Performance characteristics of single cell in phosphoric acid fuel cell were studied for various electrode fabrication parameters such as teflon content, electrode structure, thickness of electrocatalyst layer, platinum content and electrode area. The performance of single cell was decided from the measured voltage-current through a load change. The electrode of 40wt.% teflon exhibited high initial performance of single cell, but in the long term operation, the cell performance of 45 wt.% teflon was better. Also the single cell appeared good performance in case of electrodes with duplicate structure, thin electrocatalyst in thickness, more platinum content, and small area. These results of cell performance were discussed as related to the electrolyte flooding, formation of 3 phase boundary area, internal resistance of electrode, and microstructure of electrode.

  • Several methods for electrode fabrication of phosphoric acid fuel cell(PAFC) have been studied. The conventional methods that include a coating method and a rolling method, have disadvantages of a very complicated drying process and a hot pressing process for making a large electrode. In this study, to solve these problems, the mixing method of coating and rolling processes has been developed. In the mixing method, the electrode was coated on the electrode support and, after drying the coated layer, was rolled at room temperature and then sintered at $350^{\circ}C$. The single cell performances of the electrodes fabricated by several methods were examined and the mixing method appeared a good cell performance of 0.65 V, $260\;mA/cm^2$. Also the single cell with an area of $2000\;cm^2$ was manufactured and its performance attained 0.593 V, 300 A.

  • A proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) operated at $150^{\circ}C$ was evaluated by a controlling different amount of phosphoric acid (PA) to a membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) without humidification of the cells. The effects on MEA performance of the amount of PA in the cathode are investigated. The PA content in the cathodes was optimized for higher catalyst utilization. The highest value of the active electrochemical area is achieved with the optimum amount of PA in the cathode confirmed by in-situ cyclic voltammetry. The current density-voltage experiments (I-V curve) also shows a transient response of cell voltage affected by the amount of PA in the electrodes. Furthermore, this information was compared with the production variables such as hot pressing and vacuum drying to investigate those effect to the electrochemical performances.

  • Porous matrices for PAFC were prepared with chemically synthesized polyaniline powders. Phosphoric acid doped polyaniline showed decreasing electric conductivities as the temperature increased. Above $100^{\circ}C$, it showed negligible conductivities. It was stable in phosphoric acid up to $250^{\circ}C$. SiC powders or SiC whiskers were added to polyaniline to decrease the thermal expansion of polyaniline. 10% of polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) was also added as a binder. The bubble pressures and wettabilities of matrices were investigated and compared with the porosities measured by porosimeter. Based on these data, the optimum manufacturing condition was determined. The bubble pressure of the matrix made by adding 25w/o SiC whiskers was 345mmHg, the wettability was 235w/o, and the porosity was 83%. In the unit cell operation, the performances of polyaniline matrices were as good as those of SiC matrices. This result suggested that polyaniline can be a possible candidate for the matrix material of PAFC.

  • Gas diffusion and electrolyte penetration in wetproofed gas diffusion electrodes were studied using layers of PTFE- bonded carbon. Minor variations in fabrication and testing procedures resulted in very large variations in catalyst layer wetting characteristics and permiability for reaction gas. By controlling the pore size of gas diffusion electrode carefully by varing the PTFE contents, baking temperature, baking time and ammonium bicarbonate as additive, the primary pore was decreased and the secondary pore was increased and so more reaction gas through the primary pore could be reacted at catalyst agglomertes in the secondary pore. And the cathode current density was increased to more than 400mA.$\textrm{cm}^2$ and Tafel slope value was decreased to lower than 110mA/decade.
