  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a rational guidelines of authority record for personal name heading control. It analyzes the Statement of Principles of ICCP, the headings of Korean Cataloging Rules and personal name heading of KORMARC on Disc. It also investigates the problems and suggests the possible improvements for headings of personal name. The rules for heading control retains the frame from headings of cataloging rules. The guidelines for heading control of personal name will be integrated in the rules for headings. To efficient retrieval, It suggests distinction of different persons of the same name and subject List.

  • This study analyzed the current condition of authority control, introduced the MADS(Metadata Authority Description Schema) for authority data. MADS supports encoding an authority description for a agent(person, organization), event, term(topic, temporal entity, genre, geographic entity, hierarchical geographic entity, occupation) and defines main elements, subelements, and attributes using the XML schema language. Lastly, using the MADS's characteristics, this study proposed the effective use plans of interoperability of authority data.

  • In this paper, we proposed the effectively method for constructing of name authority data in korean academic papers and designed the authority database system that is applied the method. For these, we analyze the requisite for identifying the author name and suggest the author identification method. Because construction of name authority record costs time and effort, and considering frequently period of large-scale acquisitions of academic papers, our suggestion includes the system that be able to manage and construct the name authority database, and that is tightly connected with the academic paper management and service systems.

  • This study aims to suggest some idea for construction of headings in authority records to improve conventional method for authority control. The reference structure between established form and other forms was replaced by the link structure based on access points and adopting standard authority numbers was considered. Additional elements such as work information to distinguish homonym and notational system of the headings to promote sharing of authority records were also addressed. Authority records management system was constructed to test structure of headings suggested in this study, too. Through this research, we confirmed that management, identification, and sharing of authority records were considerably improved compared with the conventional authority control system.

  • This study developed a name access point control system for better performance of information retrieval from institutional repositories, which are equipped with authorgenerated metadata processes for self-archiving. In developing name access point control data for the system, the primary data were created from the existing authority. However, unlike the existing authority data, the primary data did not use any authority forms. Instead, the data utilized all the forms provided by the resources as access points. Specifically, field of activity(subject) and title information on authorship were used to distinguish between persons who have the same name. The result showed that the system improved the performance of the information retrieval. The system has been also expected to be utilized over other metadata provided by libraries, in addition to the institutional repositories, in order to provide better quality information.

  • The purpose of this study is to make a suggestion on the Korean cataloging rules (KCR) for personal name access points. KCR4 revised in 2003 has been criticized in the absence of related rules. To the end, this study investigates (1) the objectives and functions of personal name access points in the changing bibliographic universe, (2) the detailed rules for persons in RDA and new NCR, and (3) the cases of personal name access points in LC(Library of Congress), NDL(National Diet Library in Japan) authority records. (4) Based on theses, suggested are rules and examples for recording attributes and the authorized access points of persons in KCR to be revised. The data were collected from literature review, the case study, and the interviews with catalogers.

  • Despite repeated efforts to develop a methodological foundation for assembling collaborative authority data in South Korea, issues such as the establishment of a standard authority model and standard authority construction as well as the reconfiguration of existing entities in authority building have prevented such research from generating a cooperative push for nation-wide authority data and progressing toward concrete implementation. The formulation of a collaborative and well-utilized collection of national authority data accordingly calls for 1) a practical approach to supporting both established authority data contributors and newly organized avenues of mutual participation in authority building, 2) committed involvement on the part of national institutions capable of providing the project with sustained assistance, and 3) a standard identification system which allows multiple organizations to merge their data. This study addresses the challenges of the current environment by taking stock of the key components necessary for the creation of collaborative authority data and using a Semantic Web-based interoperable VIVO ontology model to propose a viable national authority data framework.

  • This research analyzes the current status of personal name authority control and its impact on the end user searching against OPACs in public libraries in Korea. Further it also suggests the ways to improve the recall ratio in author search with a minimal modification, system-wise and authority-wise. on the KOLISNET as a stepping stone for other public libraries. Finally, a long-term plan for establishing proper authority work in public libraries including the National Library of Korea is briefly proposed. In order to find out whether authority works are conducted and examine how variant written forms of the same foreign name and variant names of the same person are treated, OPACS of the National Library of Korea, KOLISNET, and ten randomly selected public libraries were searched. Findings indicate that while the National Library of Korea was performing authority control, even incomplete, the rest did not appear to conduct any form or authority control. As a spinoff of the research, it is observed that in many public libraries their bibliographic records and retrieval methods are inaccurate, lacking consistency, and incomplete. In sum. it is strongly recommended that (1) as a start for authority work among public libraries personal name authority control should be conducted to enhance the identifying and collocating functions in OPACs, (2) a shared authority database, for which the National Library of Korea's authority database might be used. should be built for Public libraries.

  • The final report of the Functional Requirement of Subject Authority Data(FRSAD), the 3rd report of the FRBR family model, is announced by IFLA in June, 2010. This model represents the international trends of subject authority control and suggests a direction to the future subject authority record suitable for the FRBR system. Therefore aims of this study are to analysis the FRSAD model in context of the FRBR family and apply the model to the subject headings and bibliographic records of Korean National Library. For these aims, we analyse the model focused on the entities, attributes, and relationships between entities. From this analysis, we have found the openness of the FRSAD, which does not force a certain entity types and has focus on the conceptual aspects of the entity not only the form of the headings. Moreover, we suggest examples by applying the FRSAD frame and facets of the FAST to the Headings of the NLSH and related KORMARC fields. The scope of this study is the additional entities of the FRBR groups, so personal names, corporate names, family names and titles are not included. As a result, it is necessary to determine the criteria for the types of thema and to apply the types consistently in bibliographic records. A follow up research will be needed to suggest more detailed examples.
