  • Parboiling, a popular technology used to protect rice from nutrient loss during milling and to increase the shelf-life of rice, was applied to barley kernels, and its effect on nutrient retention and chemical composition was evaluated. Before 36 days after ear emergence, barley kernels showed water content higher than 40%, and parboiling without presoaking resulted in at least 43% of gelatinization degree. This implies that soaking, an important step of parboiling, is dispensable for barley at milky stage. Parboiling did make little change in the appearance of the kernel after 31 days from ear emergence. Nonreducing sugars such as sucrose and raffinose remained unchanged while reducing sugars of barley was decreased by parboiling, with exception that maltose increased. Pearling led to decrease in crude protein, fat, fiber and minerals of barley sampled and parboiled on 36th day from ear emergence. Free sugars in the parboiled barley also was reduced with increasing pearling rate. Vitamin $B_1$ content of the parboiled barley was $260\;{\mu}g\;per\;100\;g$ as dry basis at 50% pearling rate, compared to $36\;{\mu}g$ for raw barley at same pearling rate. Thus parboiling appeared to be very effective in the retention of vitamin $B_1$ during pearling.

  • The objective of the study was to undertake a phylogenetic diversity census of ruminal archaea based on a meta-analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences that were publicly available in the Ribosomal Database Project. A total of 8,416 sequences were retrieved from the Ribosomal Database Project (release 11, update 5) and included in the construction of a taxonomy tree. Species-level operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were analyzed at a 97% sequence similarity by using the QIIME program. Of the 8,416 sequences, 8,412 were classified into one of three phyla; however, the remaining four sequences could not be classified into a known phylum. The Euryarchaeota phylum was predominant and accounted for 99.8% of the archaeal sequences examined. Among the Euryarchaeota, 65.4% were assigned to Methanobrevibacter, followed by Methanosphaera (10.4%), Methanomassillicoccus (10.4%), Methanomicrobium (7.9%), Methanobacterium (1.9%), Methanimicrococcus (0.5%), Methanosarcina (0.1%), and Methanoculleus (0.1%). The 7,544 sequences that had been trimmed to the V2 and V3 regions clustered into 493 OTUs. Only 17 of those 493 OTUs were dominant groups and accounted for more than 1% of the 7,544 sequences. These results can help guide future research into the dominant ruminal methanogens that significantly contribute to methane emissions from ruminants, research that may lead to the development of anti-methanogenic compounds that inhibit these methanogens regardless of diet or animal species.

  • The parties in International Sale of Goods including Korean Firms Should note ; The buyer must pay the price for the goods and take delivery of them as required by the contract and CISG. The obligations mentioned in Article 53 are primary obligations which are to be fulfilled in the normal performance of the contract. The buyer has to take delivery at the respective place within a reasonable period after this communication since he cannot be required to take delivery immediately. Refusing to take delivery in case of delay not constituting a ground for avoiding the contract makes no sense, since this would lead to even later delivery. The buyer's obligation to pay the price includes taking such steps and complying with such formalities as may be required under the contract or any laws and regulations to enable payment to be made. International sales contracts frequently prescribe that the buyer has to act in advance, that is before the seller starts the process of delivery. Such acts may be either advance payments or the procurement of securities for payment as letters of credit guarantees. On the other hand, The seller deliver the goods hand over any documents relating to them and transfer the property in the goods, as required by the contract and CISG. The seller must deliver goods which are of the quantity, quality and description required by the contract and which are contained or packaged in the manner required by the contract. Except where the parties have agreed otherwise, the goods do not conform with the contract unless they are fit for the purposes for which goods of the same description would ordinarily be used are fit for any particular purpose expressly or impliedly made known to the seller at the time of the conclusion of the contract, except where the circumstances show that the buyer did not rely, or that it was unreasonable for him to rely, on the seller's skill and judgement. The buyer may declare the contract avoided if the failure by the seller to perform any of his obligations under the contract or CISG amounts to a fundamental breach of contract. The seller may declare the contract avoided if the failure by the buyer to perform any of his obligations under the contract or CISG amounts to a fundamental breach of contract.

  • With the recent development of space technology, the satellite market, especially the small satellite market, is growing globally. As the satellite market continues to grow, the launch vehicle market is also growing, and demand for low-cost launches is increasing. There are a number of options for low-cost launches, including development of engine that uses low-cost propellants, product and transportation cost savings, but the most effective way to reduce launch costs is to reuse the used launch vehicles. USA's Space Shuttle, a famous rocket as manned spacecraft, could be referred as the start of reusable launch vehicle. However, Space Shuttle had limited reusable parts and it was very expensive even though it is a reusable launch vehicle because of its low efficiency. In recent years, aiming at a real reusable launch vehicle, reusable launch vehicle for commercial purposes have been developed around USA's SpaceX and Blue Origin, and re-landing tests were successfully accomplished. In addition, SpaceX successfully did the re-using of first-stage launch vehicle that had been succeeded in re-landing already. In accordance with this trend, countries such as Europe and India are also concentrating on the study of reusable launch vehicles. Including Blue Origin, companies like Virgin Galactic and XCOR in the United States, are also trying to commercialize the same reusable technology as the private manned space tourism. Confirmation of these technology trends is essential, because the re-use technology could change the landscape of the global launch vehicle market.

  • This study examines exchange rate volatility spillovers that affect the exchange rate volatility of Korean currency. For this study, the Japanese yen, British pound, Euro, and Canadian dollar are used as the currencies of developed countries, and the Thai baht, Indonesian rupiah, Singapore dollar, and Australian dollar are used as the currencies of the areas near Korea. The GARCH(1.1) model is employed for weekly data covering the period from January 2009 to December 2017. This study finds that the volatility spillovers from the Canadian dollar, Singapore dollar, and Australian dollar to the Korean won are significant, while the volatility spillovers from the Japanese yen, British pound, Euro, Thai baht, and Indonesian rupiah to the Korean won are insignificant. In terms of the economic system and structure, Japan, Britain, and European countries are at a higher level than Korea, while Thailand and Indonesia are at a lower level than Korea. Canada, Singapore, and Australia are almost at the same level as Korea. Therefore, these results appear to be derived from the phenomenon of exchange rate spillovers among countries with a similar economic system and structures, and contradict the literature, which has argued that exchange rates volatility spillovers occur among countries that are in the same area geographically.

  • In this study, traffic safety technology was developed for rural areas by reviewingthe relevant literature and data from the Traffic Accident Analysis System for the Chungcheong region. The goal is to reduce traffic accidents in small regional cities and rural areas in Korea. A road shoulder recognition light was developed to fit the pedestrian characteristics of the people using transportation in rural areas. It also minimizes damage to crops due to light pollution from traffic lights and street lights, and it supplements problems of damage from collision with vehicles and agricultural machines. The efficiency of the technology developed in this study was verified by comparing and analyzing the number of traffic accidents and the saved cost before and after its installation. A test bedwas established based on rural areas and is being evaluated for its applicability and effectiveness. It is expected that the reliability of such facilities could be improved through continuous studies, data collection, and analysis.

  • Although a global ban on the use of endosulfan, an organochloline insecticide, has taken effect in mid-2012, it has been still used in several countries, including India and China, and detected in diverse environments in the world due to its relative persistence and semi-volatility. In this study, the effect of endosulfan on soil bacterial community was investigated using 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing method. When endosulfan was applied to an upland soil at a rate of 100 mg/kg soil (ES soil), the number of operational taxonomic units (OTU) and diversity indices for bacteria initially decreased and gradually recovered to the level of the non-treated soil (NT soil) during an eight-week incubation period. At bacterial phylum level, relative abundances of Proteobacteria and Verrucomicrobia were higher while those of Chloroflexi and Spirochaetes were lower in the ES soil than in the NT soil, suggesting that an endosulfan application affects the bacterial community structure in soil. In the ES soil, the relative abundances of the OTUs affiliated to the genera Sphingomonas and Burkholderia increased in the initial period of incubation while those affiliated to the genera Pseudonocardia and Opitutus increased in the late period of incubation. Because the first three genera contain bacterial strains reported to degrade endosulfan, they are expected to be involved in the degradation of endosulfan, probably one after another.

  • Using bidding data collected from the World Bank's open database, this research performed a series of competitive analyses of the major countries that have participated in the Bank's engineering consulting services contracts in Vietnam. The goal of the analysis was to evaluate the performance of Korean engineering firms to date, and provide strategic recommendations for future projects. Results showed that Korean firms had a high bid acceptance rate, comparable to major developed countries. The success was attributed to the high technical scores in the selection process. Comparatively, financial scores were not competitive and inferior to developing countries such as China and India. Results of a 'Skitmore' analysis revealed that Korea was competitive in medium size projects and were situated between developed and developing countries. Korea thus needs to increase participation in basic and detailed design services, 2) improve labor costs through 'localization' and latest technologies, and 3) and venture into larger sized projects.

  • Korea boasts of abundant historical earthquake records of almost 1900 events. The epicenters and intensities of these earthquakes are determined on the basis of descriptions and felt areas of the events. It turns out that most of the earthquakes occurred on major faults or tectonic boundaries of the peninsula except for the northeastern part which had been the least disrupted by tectonic disturbances during the Mesozoic. It appears that the crustal layers of the southern and northwestern parts of the peninsula had been severely ruptured during the Mesozoic disturbances and some of the faults thus generated have been active since. The seismicity of the peninsula had been rather low from the first to the fourteenth century, but unusually high from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, and have been rather low since. This period of unusually high seismicity of the peninsula coincides with that of the northeastern part of China, suggesting the two areas are seismologically closely connected. It appears that most of the seismicity of the peninsula results from the high stress propagating from the Himalayas where the Eurasian and Indian plates collide. The data file of Korean historical earthquakes is not yet complete and supplementary studies are under way. The main purpose of this paper is to provide the data file of Korean historical earthquakes analyzed up to date for geoscientists and engineers in need of this file.
