  • The purpose of this study is to make a conceptual framework for comprehensively and dynamically understanding region which is based on an interaction among space, time, and society. Region is not naturally and objectively given, but socially constructed based on material space, and such a socially constructed region takes an active role for changing society because of the conflicts either within the region or among the regions. Particularly the social theory which tries to establish the new perspectives to the interaction between space and society is not much concerned about the relations between space and time and also those between society and nature. The theory of space and time scale is needed to deeply understand space, time, and society/nature.

  • This study analyzed student noticing in a lesson that emphasized relational understanding of equal signs for first graders from four aspects: centers of focus, focusing interactions, mathematical tasks, and nature of the mathematical activity. Specifically, the instructional factors that emphasize the relational understanding of equal signs derived from previous research were applied to a first-grade addition and subtraction unit, and then lessons emphasizing the relational understanding of equal signs were conducted. Students' noticing in this lesson was comprehensively analyzed using the focusing framework proposed in the previous study. The results showed that in real classroom contexts centers of focus is affected by the structure of the equation and the form of the task, teacher-student interactions, and normed practices. In particular, we found specific teacher-student interactions, such as emphasizing the meaning of the equals sign or using examples, that helped students recognize the equals sign relationally. We also found that students' noticing of the equation affects reasoning about equation, such as being able to reason about the equation relationally if they focuse on two quantities of the same size or the relationship between both sides. These findings have implications for teaching methods of equal sign.

  • This study examined whether there were differences in stakeholders' concerns regarding consulting in gifted education institutes. A total of 122 stakeholders in gifted and talented education responded to SoCQ(the Stage of Concerns Questionnaire, Hall & Hord, 2011). The SoCQ responses of these stakeholders to consulting for gifted education institutes were converted into relative intensities and SoCQ profiles, which were analyzed by the affiliated areas of institute, teaching years in gifted education, continuities of affairs in gifted education, and approaches to teacher training for gifted education with using t-test and one-way analysis of variance. Results indicated that stakeholders generally showed the highest concern for stage 1(information) and the lowest concerns for stage 4(consequence), which were the initial stage of change and innovation in consulting for gifted education institutes. In the meanwhile, skakeholders having training program for professionals showed the more concern for stage 6(refocusing), which was a kind of resistance for the present consulting for gifted education institutes. On the based on these results, this study suggested ways(or methods) for settlement and the diffusion of successful gifted education consulting.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore how well teachers anticipate students to understand and solve equations. For this purpose, a questionnaire of the equal sign was developed, and 20 fourth-grade classes were selected as research participants. Teachers in each class were asked to predict various strategies on how their own students would respond to the questionnaire, and a total of 450 students from the 20 classes solved the questionnaire. As a result of the analysis, the teachers could predict students' computational strategies and relational strategies easily but did not fully understand that some students used both strategies or employed incorrect computational or relational strategies. The students tended to use relational strategies better than the teachers expected. They also employed operational strategies more often than the teachers expected. The teachers predicted that students' strategies would be influenced by the types of the problems such as equation-structure items and equation-solving items, whereas the students were more influenced by the forms of equations in the problems. Based on these results, several implications for the knowledge to which teachers needed to attend were discussed so that elementary school students could enhance the relational understanding of the equal sign.

  • In this study, the effects of reading strategy, which is a combination of reading methods on high school students' reading ability were investigated using action research methodology in order to provide practical support in educational fields. Also, the effects of reading strategies on adolescents' reading attitudes and the correlation between text comprehension and change of reading attitudes were investigated. This study is unique for its adoption of reading method combinations as reading strategies to enhance the effectiveness of reading in terms of text comprehension. Also, this study is meaningful in dealing with the cognitive abilities of high school students.

  • Recently, implementation of telemedicine in Korea has been conducted as one of pilot projects with public health doctors. To manage and expand telemedicine services sustainably, it is necessary to understand the positions of various stakeholders. The purpose of this study is to observe and describe major phenomena around stakeholders related to telemedicine to capture major issues following the implementation of telemedicine. This study interviewed 24 research participants, including public health doctors who participated in the pilot project for telemedicine services. As a result of analyzing the interview manuscript using the grounded theory method, totally 68 concepts were derived at the coding stage, and 19 sub-categories, 11 categories, were proposed through the categorization process. In addition, through the elicitation concepts and categories of this study, conflicts among stakeholders were explained, conceptual models that presented the process of resolving conflicts, and five types of stakeholders were proposed. This study has theoretical and practical implications in that it captures and describes important issues from stakeholders in telemedicine services. The results of this study are expected to give some hints for problem solving to all of the stakeholders who wish to successfully build telemedicine services.
