  • For the formation identification, surface geological survey, drill core analysis, core description and well log analysis are widely used. Among them well log analysis is a popular method with drill core analysis, since it measures continuously physical properties at in-situ. In this study we calculated Thomsen anisotropic parameters (${\varepsilon},\;{\delta},\;{\eta}$) after applying Backus averaging method to the P wave velocity, S wave velocity, and density logs. The well log data application of Blackfoot, Canada, shows the formation could be divided by 12 layers. This shows that Thomsen anisotropic parameters for identifying formation using anisotropic parameters is useful if there is no natural gamma log that is widely used for the formation identification.

  • A total of 18 stress measurements were performed in the rock and rock-like blocks in the laboratory to estimate the influence of anisotropy in rock. Full scale overcoring equipment, which consists of a coring machine and a biaxial loading system by flat jacks, was developed to simulate the in-situ rock stress condition in the laboratory By comparing the isotropic analysis with the anisotropic analysis in measuring the stress, conclusions have been drawn as to the influence of anisotropy. The maximum difference between the isotropic and the anisotropic analysis was 34% and it was shown that the stress measurement considering the anisotropy was needed. To confirm the validity of the observed data, a diagnostic analysis of stress relief curve by overcoring was conducted using the three dimensional finite difference program, FLAC 3D.

  • Thanks to the multimedia technology development, it is possible to show image representations in high quality and to process images in various ways. Anisotropic diffusion as an effective diffusion filtering among many image preprocessing methods and postprocessing methods is used in reduction of speckle noises of ultrasound images, image restoration, edge detection, and image segmentation. However, the conventional anisotropic diffusion based on a cross-kernel causes the following problems. The problem is the concentration of edges in the vertical or horizontal directions. In this paper, a new anisotropic diffusion transform based on directions of gradient is proposed. The proposed method uses the eight directional square-kernel which is an expanded form of the cross-kernel. The proposed method is to select directions of small gradient based on square-kernel. Therefore, the range of proposed diffusion is selected adaptively according to the number of the directions of gradient. Experimental results show that the proposed method can decrease the concentration of edges in the vertical or horizontal directions, remove impulse noise. The image in high quality can be obtained as a result of the proposed method.

  • Nowadays there is a trend to apply the diffusion equation to image Processing. The anisotropic diffusion equation is highly favoured as a noise removal algorithm because it can remove noise while enhancing edges. However if the two dimensional anisotropic diffusion equation is applied to the noise removal of video sequences, flickering artifact due to the luminance difference between frames and ghost artifact due to the interfiltering between frames occur. In this paper the two dimensional anisotropic diffusion equation is extended to the sequence axis. The Proposed three dimensional anisotropic diffusion equation removes noise more efficiently than the two dimensional equation, and furthermore removes the flickering and ghost artifact as well.

  • The rotatable anisotropy effect was observed in the ferromagnetic resonance measurement in exchange coupled ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic thin films and it was due to rotation of antiferromagnetic layer by the exchange coupling energy. We analyzed the CoFe thickness dependence of rotatable anisotropy field and ferromagnetic resonance linewidth in exchange coupled $CoFe(t_F)/MnIr(2.5nm)$ thin films. The rotatable anisotropy field was inversely propositional to the CoFe thickness and it was well fitted by the rotatable anisotropy energy of $0.96erg/cm^2$. The ferromagnetic resonance linewidth were linearly propositional to the rotatable anisotropy field in $t_F$ < 50 nm, while it was more dominated by the eddy current effect in $t_F$ > 50 nm.

  • Although the main geology of Korea consists of granite and gneiss, it Is not uncommon to encounter anisotropy Phenomena in crosshole radar tomography even when the basement is crystalline rock. To solve the anisotropy Problem, we have developed and continuously upgraded an anisotropic inversion algorithm assuming a heterogeneous elliptic anisotropy to reconstruct three kinds of tomograms: tomograms of maximum and minimum velocities, and of the direction of the symmetry axis. In this paper, we discuss the developed algorithm and introduce some case histories on the application of anisotropic radar tomography in Korea. The first two case histories were conducted for the construction of infrastructure, and their main objective was to locate cavities in limestone. The last two were performed In a granite and gneiss area. The anisotropy in the granite area was caused by fine fissures aligned in the same direction, while that in the gneiss and limestone area by the alignment of the constituent minerals. Through these case histories we showed that the anisotropic characteristic itself gives us additional important information for understanding the internal status of basement rock. In particular, the anisotropy ratio defined by the normalized difference between maximum and minimum velocities as well as the direction of maximum velocity are helpful to interpret the borehole radar tomogram.

  • This paper presents the shear capacities of biaxial hollow slab with donut type hollow sphere. Recently, various types of slab systems which can reduce self-weight of slabs have been studied for increasing constructions of taller and larger building structures. A biaxial hollow slab system is widely known as one of the effective slab system, which can reduce self-weight of slab. According to previous studies, the hollow slab has low shear strength, compared to solid slab. Also, the shear capacities of biaxial hollow slab are influenced by the shapes and materials of hollow spheres. However, the current code does not provide a clear computation method for the shear strength of hollow slab. To verify the shear capacities of this hollow slab, one-way shear tests were performed. Four test specimens were used for test parameters. One was conventional RC slab and others were hollow slabs. The test parameters included two different shapes and materials of plastic balls. The shape parameters were donut and non-donut forms and the material parameters were general plastic and glass fiber plastic. The results showed that the shear strengths varied depending on hollow shapes and materials used in the slab.

  • We have developed an inversion code for three-dimensional (3D) resistivity tomography including the anisotropy effect. The algorithm is based on the finite element approximations for the forward modelling and Active Constraint Balancing method is adopted to enhance the resolving power of the smoothness constraint least-squares inversion. Using numerical experiments, we have shown that anisotropic inversion is viable to get an accurate image of the subsurface when the subsurface shows strong electrical anisotropy. Moreover, anisotropy can be used as additional information in the interpretation of subsurface. This algorithm was also applied to the field dataset acquired in the abandoned old mine area, where a high-rise apartment block has been built up over a mining tunnel. The main purpose of the investigation was to evaluate the safety analysis of the building due to old mining activities. Strong electrical anisotropy has been observed and it was proven to be caused by geological setting of the site. To handle the anisotropy problem, field data were inverted by a 3D anisotropic tomography algorithm and we could obtain 3D subsurface images, which matches well with geology mapping observations. The inversion results have been used to provide the subsurface model for the safety analysis in rock engineering and we could assure the residents that the apartment has no problem in its safety after the completion of investigation works.

  • In this study, to improve on the inaccurate results of the orthotropic plate analysis, we aim to propose a modified coefficient of the orthotropic flexural rigidity for stiffened plates with rectangular ribs considering the dimensions of ribs. The sensitivity of the flexural rigidity and the maximum displacement according to the dimensions of stiffened plates were analyzed and the parametric study on the modified coefficient of the orthotropic flexural rigidity of stiffened plates was performed. The results show that the ratio of modified coefficients can be expressed as a function for each rib height, space and thickness regardless of plate thickness and the modified flexural rigidity can be easily estimated from the ratio functions of modified coefficients. The application of the coefficient function to various types of stiffened plates with different boundary conditions, aspect ratios, rib arrangement and loading size shows that the proposed function improves the accuracy of the orthotropic plate analysis compared with the results of the reference. Therefore, the orthotropic plate analysis of stiffened plates with rectangular ribs can easily achieve more accurate results using the coefficient function proposed in this study.

  • Recently, non-destructive stress measurement method using magnetic anisotropy sensor has been applied to the construction site such as steel bridges and steel pipes. In addition, steel rib used in the tunnel construction site was found to be possible to measure the stress by non-destructive method. In this study, steel loading experiments using magnetic anisotropy sensor developed in Japan and strain gauges were conducted to derive stress sensitivity curve for domestic steel SS400. Also, additional steel loading experiments and numerical analysis were performed for evaluation of applicability for non-destructive stress measurement method using magnetic anisotropy sensor. As a result of this study, stress sensitivity curves for domestic steel SS400 were derived using output voltage measured by magnetic anisotropy sensor and average of stress measured by strain gauges depending on the measurement location. And as a result of comparing additional steel loading experiments with the numerical analysis, error level of magnetic anisotropy sensor is around 20MPa. When considering the level of the yield stress(245MPa) of steel, in case of using magnetic anisotropy sensor in order to determine the stress status of steel, it has sufficient accuracy in engineering. Especially, magnetic anisotropy sensor can easily identify the current state of stress which considers residual stress at steel structure that stress measurement sensor is not installed, so we found that magnetic anisotropy sensor can be applied at maintenance of steel structure conveniently.
