  • This study was accomplished to get to know the actual condition of denture management in understanding of denture management education relate to the post denture management of elderly, by meeting directly, among elderly people (more than 65 years old) wearing dentures, using structured guestionnaire from 15th Oct. to 15th Dec. 2016 in Daegu Metropolitan City. As a result, there was a significant difference in understanding of denture management education according to age, education level, cost of denture, general health condition, position of denture, period of wearing upper and bottom denture, frequencies of dental treatment and degree of halitosis(p<0.05). As a result, it is considered that continuing denture management education by studying characteristics of the elderly is needed and standardized denture management manual has to be made.

  • Purpose: The aim of the present investigation was to understand the incidence, prevalence of denture stomatitis in denture wearers, who were over 60 years old, and use the results for a fundamental data to promote public awareness about denture stomatitis and its education tools. Materials and methods: From August 21 to September 8 2017, 500 denture wearers, who were more than 60 years old in Seoul and 4 other metropolitan cities (Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, and Daejeon), received questionnaires. The questionnaires included denture wearers' demographic distributions, specific dental treatment experiences, discomforts with current dentures, their oral health conditions, and the method of denture cleansing. Results: Thirty-two percent of 500 denture wearers responded that they have healthy oral conditions. Two hundred and eight respondents (41.6%) were aware of denture stomatitis. Only 131 (26.2%) were informed about the removable denture covered by national health insurance and 327 (65.4%) of denture wearers were using the improper denture cleansing methods. Conclusion: A large number of denture wearers still do not recognize the importance of proper treatment for denture stomatitis, insurance covered denture treatments, and adequate denture cleansing methods.

  • Denture adhesive is a material used to improve the retention and stability of the denture. And denture adhesive is divided into soluble and insoluble type. It improves the retention, stability of dentures, and masticatory functions of patients. Maintenance like cleansing and periodic follow up is essential. Almost of dental clinicians are only simply aware of the effects of denture adhesives and often rely on the manufacturer's instructions on precautions and maintenance. The purpose of this study is to examine the properties, effects, and precautions of denture adhesives, and to present clinical guidelines for patients and professionals.

  • In removable dental prostheses, it is important to minimize impairment of residual tissue caused by wearing dentures. There are two factors that harm residual tissue. The first is functional load bearing of remaining teeth and alveolar ridges and the second is the effect of poor oral hygiene. Double crown retained removable dental prostheses provide rigid support, and it may reduce impairment caused by load bearing of alveolar ridges. Also, dental plaque and oral deposits, which are attached to outer crowns and dentures, can be easily managed extra-orally. In addition, it is beneficial to the health of the marginal gingiva because inner crowns have easy access for oral hygiene. In this case, double crown retained removable dental prostheses were used for the partially edentulous patient with severe residual alveolar bone resorption and poor oral hygiene, and the result was clinically satisfactory in terms of functional, esthetical, and oral hygiene aspects.

  • This study is to investigate the relationship between the subjective mastication level of the elderly wearing denture and their satisfaction with dentures. The data was analyzed on 212 denture-wearing elderly people over the age of 65 living in Daejeon, Nonsan, Gongju, and Cheonan from November 22, 2019 to January 21, 2020. As a result of the survey, the higher the subjective mastication level, the more regular dental visits related to dentures showed that the denture satisfaction increases, as the dentures wearing period increases showed that the decrease in denture satisfaction. Based on the above results, it is required to prepare a denture follow-up management program and a denture repair cost support policy to improve the subjective mastication level and denture satisfaction of the elderly with dentures.

  • Purpose. To investigate the differences in the frequency of post-fitting denture check-ups based on gender, age, insurance status, denture arch, and type among patients aged 65 and above. Methods. This research analyzed 988 patients from National Health Insurance Service Ilsan Hospital's Department of Prosthodontics, who had denture fittings over the last 10 years. Variables including gender, age, insurance status and type, denture arch, and denture type were assessed. Statistical analyses were performed at a 5% significance level. Results. The study incorporated 988 dentures, revealing a median of 3 check-ups post-fitting. Male patients significantly had more visits than females (P = .017), and those with full metal dentures visited significantly more than those with partial dentures (P = .005). Other variables were not significantly influential on the post-fitting check-up frequency. Conclusion. Within this study's confines, an increase in denture adjustment sessions was observed for male patients and those with full metal dentures.

  • The purpose of this study was to offer basic data for developing effective program for promotion elderly people's oral condition, and oral health behavior upon the appearance of denture. This study was performed by utilizing health questionnaire survey and oral examination survey for first year(2010) law data of the 5th korea national health and nutrition examination survey. The research subjects were 1419 people who were aged over 65 and completed the oral examination and oral questionnaire survey. In the general characteristics, the need of denture was indicated highly in the male elderly. Factors of having relationship with a need of denture in oral health condition were indicated to be chewing difficulty(p<0.001) and dental caries(p<0.0001). The case of not using oral hygiene device was high in a need of denture(p<0.001). Also, a case of not dental treatment was indicated to be high in a need of denture(p<0.001). Through these related findings, the elderly's oral condition and oral health behavior were indicated to have high relationship with a need of denture. There is a need of securing basic data for promoting the elderly's oral health in the future and of seeking a plane for application in order to improve the elderly's health in the aging society. Therefore there is a need of securing and seeking elderly's health program which is considered the aging society's characteristics to improve the elderly's health promotion.

  • The residual alveolar ridge below the denture base undergoes physiologic changes over time, which results in the existing dentures becoming less accurate with the residual alveolar ridge. In addition, changes of the occlusal plane, decreasing in vertical dimension and loss of denture retention and facial support can occur. Consequently, denture relining may be required to accommodate these changes and ensure an ongoing close fit. Relining a denture can be performed directly on the chairside using autopolymerizing relining materials or indirectly in the laboratory using heat-cured relining materials. A direct relining method is not only simple but also time and cost effective. However, irritation or burning sensation of the mucosa can occur, and poor bonding of the relining material to the denture base can be cited as disadvantages. The indirect relining method exhibits relatively high bonding strength between the relining material and the denture base, but the patient might experience discomfort during relining process period. This report will examine the characteristics of relining materials, including those used in the relining of CAD-CAM dentures, and explore the clinical considerations for relining procedures.

  • The mandible has a smaller support area than the maxilla, and in particular, in patients with generalized alveolar bone resorption, the stability of the denture and the masticatory efficiency are significantly low in the case of conventional complete denture, due to the movement of the tongue and mandible. In these patients, implant overdenture is evaluated as a highly predictable treatment method with high retention and stability, and excellent pronunciation and masticatory force. In this clinical case, patient had an edentulous maxilla and generalized alveolar bone resorption in mandible. Therefore, complete denture was placed in the maxilla and implant overdenture using milled bar attachment on 4 implants was placed in the mandible. During the 12-year follow-up period, changes in periodontal tissue and denture around the implants were periodically managed and observed.
