Military geography has been recognized a part of applied geography appeared in 1960s by the viewpoint applying geographical science technology and knowledge for war. But the contribution for war accompanying violence caused negative recognition in moral viewpoint and led stagnation of military geography's study. Therefore this paper has researched a method improving the role of military geography as a part of applied geography and considered the essential meaning of the military geography's role in the relationship between war and military sciences. Based on this consideration, this paper proposed a research direction necessary for the role contributing human development beyond the viewpoint focusing contribution for war. The result of this study confirmed the characters of the military geography's elements have two attributes contributing for war victory or improving human life quality. Military geography has laid emphasis for usability to war contribution until now and caused unsatisfactoriness of morality. But military geography can complement this unsatisfactoriness by the extension of the role contributing human life quality. This study could examine the possibility doing the role contributing for both war and peace as a intact science.

The purposes of this study are to review research trends of applied geography field, to retrospect geographical works done by Korean geographers in applied geography, and to prospect the future of applied geography. We are in the period where societal problems such as energy, transportation, pollution, environment, health care, and many others, require careful consideration and need throughout strategies for solution. Most societal problems have some geographical dimensions. Because these problems are geographic in nature, there is an obvious implication that geography as a discipline has something to offer in their solutions. In fact, most geographic problems are best presented and analyzed through the applications of geographic theories, concepts and tools. Applied geography is a branch of general geography. It relies on the scientific methods and uses the principles and methods of pure geography. However applied geography is different in that it analyzes and evaluates real world action and planning and seeks to implement and manipulate environmental and spatial realities. Thus, geographic theories and other social theories that have geographic dimensions are fundamental to applied geography. Applied geography has a short history as theme in Korean geography. During the last two decades. Korea achieved remarkable economic growth. We have also encountered widening regional disparity, housing shortage of larger cities, transportation congestion, environmental pollution and many other problems. Applied geographers have tried to analyze and solve such spatial problems during the last 30 years. The research trend of Korean applied geography can be subdivided into 5 categories: (1) land use analysis and efficient utilization, (2) national physical development and planning. (3) regional development and regional planning, (4) tourism and location-allocation, transportation planning. Still the overconcentration of Seoul metropolitan region and unbalanced regional development are perceived to be the serious spatial problems which may induce more works to solve these problems. In Korea new emphasis has to be given to some professional training and experimental learning, including methodology, field techniques data management, statistical analysis, cartography, GIS, and other tools, as applicable and beneficial to problem solving in real world. The growth of applied geography depends on new insights and purposed solutions of future applied geographers in Korea. Applied geographers will contribute to the creation of future Korean geographies.

GIS is considered as a big industry or business in the field of applied sciences. Recently GIS market in Korea is growing rapidly for LBS, Telematics, Web-geographic information services. This paper attempts to focus on the interrelationship between GIS and geography, and the question of how geography emerged out of intellectual trends within GIS to examine possible contribution of geographers in GIS fields. The application of GIS appears to be largely technical in nature. It is important for the GIS operator and the consumer of GIS products to be aware of the geographical concepts that underpin GIS operations. Also it is seen that many departments of geography in Korea have attempted to actively adopt GIS into their education program, with aim to improve the status. GIS has promoted a shift towards applied geography from academic geography. GIS researchers and educators in geography are concerned not with technology, but with the basic concepts and the issues relating to its use, in comparison with other academic fields. It is the responsibility of geography community to make sure that our students receive a geographical education that includes problem-solving, critical thinking and technical capabilities. It is concluded that promoting GIS technology in geography curriculum is essential for the further expansion of geography within GIS and also for the survival of geography.

한국의 경제지리학을 회고하고 전망하기전에 언급의 한계를 명백히 하고저 한다. 첫째는 해방이후 전세계적인 경제지리학의 연구동향을 간단히 일별하면서 그 속에 처하여 있는 한국 경제지리학의 위치를 확인하는 것이고, 둘째는 경제지리학이라 하더래도 그 연구범위는 매우 광범위하므로 이 중에서 연구의 성과가 비교적 현저하다고 볼 수 있는 농업지리 및 공업지리분야에 중점을 두고 언급하려는 것이다. 특히 전후에 두드러지게 나타난 인구지리분야와 응용경제지리학분야에 대해서는 별도로 집필되고 있기 때문에 여기에서는 제외했으며, 지리학이 아닌 타과학에서 미친 영향도 적지 않으나 역시 본고에서는 전문적 지리학연구에만 한정했다. 셋째로, 본고에 동원된 자료는 전문적 학술지에 의존하였으나 가능한 범위까지는 석사논문 수준도 취급의 대상이 되었으며 교재적 성격을 띤 단행본도 이에 포함이 되었다. 단 정책용역의 성격을 띤 보고서류는 그 종류나 수에 있어서 월등하지만 공간이 아닌 경우가 많으므로 업적은 여하간에 취급의 대상에서 배제하였다.

관광지리 연구는 다른 학문에 비하면 그 연구가 미약하여 아직도 학문적 개척 여지가 많다. 선진국에 비하면 미개척 분야에 속한다고 볼 수도 있겠으나, 80년대 이후 상당수의 논문이 발표된 바 있어 이를 기초로 관광지리학 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 최근 국정지표의 하나인 문화관광진흥에 의하여 국가의 전략사업으로 관광사업이 비약적으로 발전함에 따라, 관광에서의 지리학 역할이 큰 비중을 차지하게 되었다. 이에 따라 응용 학문적 시각에서 관광지리 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있는 경향으로 변하고 있다. 종래의 관광지 및 관광형태의 관한 개별적 지역연구에서 관광현상의 모태가 되는, 관광입지론적 연구가 활발해 졌다. 급전하는 세계화 속에서 시대에 부응하는 학문적 가치를 창출해 내기 위해서라도, 신속하고 정확한 관광환경에 대한 연구를 수행해야 한다. 관광지리학은 실증적 지역연구의 일환으로 그 방법론적 접근이 체계적으로 모색되어야 한다. 본 연구에서는 관광분야에서의 지리학 역할의 중요성을 강조하고, 체계적 접근방법에 따른 관광연구 방법론을 제사하였으며, 장소 마케팅으로서의 지리학 연구방법도 제시하였다.

This study attempts at building a GIS computing environment that incorporates object-relational spatio-temporal database for the time geography model with space-time path, space-time prism and space-time accessibility. The proposed computing environment is composed of ( i ) mobile GIS application for collecting spatio-temporal trajectory data of an individual, ( ii ) spatio-temporal database server that includes time geography model, and (iii) geovisualization client that performs time geographic queries to the spatio-temporal database. The spatio-temporal trajectory data collected by GPS-PDA client is automatically processed and sent to server through data management middleware. The spatio-temporal database implemented by extending a generic DBMS provides spatio-temporal objects, functions, and SQL. The geovisualization client illustrates 3D visual results of the queries about space-time path, space-time prism, and space-time accessibility. This study confirms the possibility of integrating mobile GIS and DBMS for time geography model, and it presents the appropriate database model with spatio-temporal objects and functions that may handle very large data for time geography application.

20세기전반의 지리학은 고도로 분화되고 그 응용면에 있어서도 상당한 노력을 가하고 있다. 따라서 그 연구방법도 다채로운 자료를 시사함은 물론이다. 지리학사에 관심을 갖다보니 한국에 관한 고지도의 자료수집을 하게 되었다. 그리고 이들은 그 수에 있어서나 그 종류에 있어서 실로 헤아릴수 없을 정도이며 그 부분이 사장된채 남아있음을 알게되었다. 아직 완성을 보지 못한 연구의 일단면이지만 관심있는 학도들을 위해서 각종자료를 찾아보기 쉽게 제공하기로 한다.

The geographical knowledge is composed of academic geographical knowledge, school geographical knowledge, applied geographical knowledge and popular geographical knowledge according to the diverse social need and demand. And the geographical knowledge has developed through the knowledge circulation system, which is connected to knowledge production, delivery, application and to reproduction among these knowledge fields. The discontinuity of knowledge circulation can lead to crisis of geographical whole. Therefore, for sustainable development of geography, it is necessary to firmly build a virtuous circulation system of geographical knowledge which is linked to a knowledge production and accumulation by an academic geography, knowledge delivery by a school geography, knowledge social application by an applied geography, knowledge application in everyday life by a popular geography and knowledge reproduction by an academic geography.

It is generally found that geography majors' progression in society has a very limited scope in Korea and this is one of the causes of lessening geographers' job market. As an attempt to draw a solution to this problem, this paper, by a close examination of the French case, tries to discuss the possibility of geographers' participation in the public sector. Geographers' participation in political and social issues has long history. They acted as providers of geographical knowledge on human and physical features of the world and also as counsellors for effective administration and politics. French geographers evaluate that it is the characteristics of geography that enable geographers to progress into the public sector. They also perceive that such fields as regional development, environment, economy, tourism, international politics are possible ones for geographers. Some implications can be drawn from this case study to extend geographers' participation in the pubic sector in Korea; it is required to sustain open mind to every field of social sciences, to improve specialized as well as generalized knowledge on geographical features, and to provide practical knowledge on spatial analysis and management.

This paper reviews geographical researches on developing countries and suggests relevant future topics. The German language region is especially chosen, because it has a lot of outcomes in the field of geographical researches on developing countries. This paper first reviews the history of geographical researches on developing countries, next analyze various trends of development strategies of developing countries and paradigms of development theories, and finally tries to describe research approaches, significant meanings of the research, and essential topics on the research. The aim of this paper is to verify the geography of developing countries as a practical academic field and to remind the importance of the geography of developing countries, which could contribute to social development and succeed the tradition of regional studies as globalization and international cooperation has continuously intensified.
