This study analyzes the improvement of absorptive capacity by basic research and the mediating effect of applied research to the innovations in the semiconductor industry. With 103 firms in the last 20 years tested firstly, applied research gives a more significant effect than basic research on the innovations. Secondly applied research functions as complete mediating effect between basic research and technological innovations. We also confirms high-performing firms are active in basic research to overcome technological hurdles. This paper suggests that basic research is needed as well as applied research. This study also implies strategic partnership and joint research with universities which have more suitable environment for basic research are needed in a long-term.

Understanding the relation between basic science and applied science is important for students in understanding the importance of learning science, the relationship between scientific knowledge and human life, and for enhancing their science motivation. In this study, we evaluated the statistical validity of this hypothetical model and explored the effect of gender and students' preferred courses (e.g., humanities, science, and art) on four dependent variables. We also evaluated the differences of students' understanding across scientific domains and students' understanding concerning basic and applied scientific knowledge. Three hundred and twenty five 10th grade students participated in this survey research. Statistically, we employed bivariate correlation, partial correlation, path analysis, two-way ANOVA, and repeated measures ANOVA. Our findings illustrated that our hypothetical model was statistically valid. In addition, the significant interaction effects of gender and students' preferred courses on each dependent variable were shown. Students have different levels of understanding of the convergence of basic and applied science, the relation between scientific knowledge and human life, and the importance of learning science across scientific domains (e.g., physics, chemistry, earth science and biology).

지금가지 세계적으로 슈퍼컴퓨터에서 주로 이용되고 있는 응용분야의 개요와 국내에서 공동으로 이용 가능한 응용소프트웨어의 간략한 설명을 하고자 한다. 본고에서는 미국이나 유럽 또는 일본등의 선진국에서 새로운 과학기술분야나 최첨단 기술을 더욱 발전시켜 나가기 위하여 300여대 이상의 슈퍼컴퓨터를 설치하여 이용하고 있다. 국내에도 1988년도에 Cray슈퍼컴퓨터가 도입가동되고 있어 과학기술분야의 발전에 도움이 크리라 예상된다. 외국의 과학기술연구의 거의 모든 분야가 1990년도 이후에는 슈퍼컴퓨터를 필요로 할 것으로 예상되기 때문에 국내에서도 슈퍼컴퓨터를 이용한 연구가 더욱 활성화되어 국내 과학 기술분야에 이바지할 수 있기를 바란다.

학문은 다양한 이론적 배경을 토대로 시대적 환경에 적응하여 발전한다. 즉, 서로의 영역을 공유하면서 새로운 이론을 창출하고 실제로 이를 응용하고 있는 것이다. 계량서지학, 계량과학학, 문헌과학학등으로 일컫고 있는 계량정보학은 문헌의 분석을 위해 수량학적 방법으로 적용하여 연구하는 학문으로, 활발히 연구되어 응용되고있는 분야는 텍스트검색시스템, OPACs, 비디오텍스시스템, 하이퍼텍스트시스템, CD-ROM, 온라인 정보서비스, 전자출판, 전자우편, 케이블 TV 등의 전자정보서비스 분야이다. 본 연구에서는 계량정보학의 사적변천과 연구영역, 그 응용과 실제를 고찰하였다.

최근 광학활성물질을 손쉽고도 저렴한 공정으로 생산하는 기술을 세계 최초로 개발하여 주목을 받고 있다. 수도모나스 등 8종의 미생물을 시험하여 하이드록시카르복실산 11종을 생산하는데 성공을 거둔것이다. 이 기술개발은 한국과학기술원 응용생물공학연구실과 LG화학 기술연구원이 3년동안의 산학협동 연구끝에 이뤄낸 것이다.

분단 이후 반세기 세월이 흐르는 동안 과학기술 분야에도 이질적인 문제가 산재해 있다. 남한이 응용과학을 토대로 삼고 있는데 비해 북한은 순수과학을 중시한다는 점, 북한이 발표했던 연구실적에 대한 진위 여부, 북한 과학자들과의 처우 문제 등은 통일 이후 논란이 될 수 있는 부분이다. 그러나 이런 예상되는 쟁점은 인문.사회과학 분야에 비하면 거의 없는 것이라 해도 과언이 아니다.

많은 호르몬의 작용중 동ㆍ식물의 생식과 관련된 호르몬의 작용을 규명하고 호르몬의 응용방법을 개발 연구하는 '전남대 호르몬연구센터'는 생식내분비, 분자내분비, 응용내분비 등 3개 연구부를 두고 왕성한 연구활동을 펴오고 있다. 현재 4명의 연구교수와 국내 각 대학교수 25명 그리고 박사후 연구원과 대학원생 등 모두 1백여명의 연구진으로 구성된 이 연구센터는 매년 국제생식내분비학 심포지엄과 2회의 국내 심포지엄을 개최하고 있다.

최근 국내외에서 클라우드 컴퓨팅 기술을 활용한 과학기술 응용 연구가 점차 이루어지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 대규모 데이터 처리를 필요로 하는 과학기술 응용을 지원하기 위한 스토리지 구축 및 운영 기술을 다루고자 한다. 본 연구를 위하여 많은 과학기술 분야 중 대규모 데이터의 처리를 필요로 하는 천문우주 분야 응용을 대상으로 선정하였으며, 물리적인 컴퓨팅 자원의 스토리지 구축 및 운영 방안뿐만 아니라, 응용 연구자가 직접 접근 및 사용하는 가상 클러스터 환경의 스토리지를 대규모 데이터 처리에 최적화 시킬 수 있는 방안을 제시하고자 한다.
