  • Despite the enforcement of minimum legal drinking age of 18 years of age since 1997, alcohol experimentation among Korean youth is believed to be greater than ever before. The use of alcohol jeopardizes physical, mental, and social development during a person's formative years, thereby endangering successful transitions from adolescent to adulthood. Even infrequent use of alcohol may result in intoxication and acute consequences, especially among youth, who may have low tolerance due to their smaller body size and may lack experience with the effects of alcohol. Using self-report questionnaire data collected from 1,697 highschool students nation-wide, the drinking behavior among Korean high school students and the relation between adolescents' alcohol expectancy and adolescent alcohol use patterns were examined. Results indicated that gender and the type of school(academic or vocational) were significant effects on the drinking behavior(drinking frequency, experience of drunkenness, the amount of alcohol consumed, experience of binge drinking and that of problems due to drinking). Male students than female students, and students of vocational schools rather than those of academic high schools reported more alcohol experimentation. Also, positive alcohol expectancy proved to have a significant relation with alcohol use among high-school students. That is, students who reported to think alcohol would have a positive effect on socializing, aggressiveness, relaxation of tensions, and enforcing sexual ability tended to drink more, to experience more binge drinking and more drinking problems. Variables of gender and the type of school also were found to have significant effects on alcohol expectancy. Males and students of vocational school held ideas of positive outcomes on drinking than others. Implications for further study on developing prevention programs are presented.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine if high risk drinkers are different from normal drinkers in terms of drinking motives, drinking refusal self-efficacy, and alcohol outcome expectancy. A total of 139 university male students in D area completed a self-reporting questionnaires to assess general characteristics, drinking motives, drinking refusal self-efficacy, alcohol outcome expectancy, and amount of drinking. The subjects were divided into high risk drinking and normal drinking based on a CDC guideline. The results of study show that high risk drinking group has higher odds for current smoking (adjusted OR=2.95, 95% CI [1.08, 8.05]), psychology major (adjusted OR=3.79, 95% CI [1.05, 13.71]), and enhancement motives (adjusted OR=2.64, 95% CI [1.15, 6.09]), whereas lower odds for junior grade (adjusted OR=0.21, 95% CI [0.05, 0.96]) and drinking refusal self-efficacy in social pressure (adjusted OR=0.42, 95% CI [0.24, 0.73]). The results suggest that drinking educational nursing intervention and smoking cessation program for university students are necessary to prevent high risk drinking effects.

  • This study is to analyze positively the effect of related with drinking of university students on drinking behavior public policy implications. By reviewing the theory and preceding research, I assumed that the elements related with drinking such as stress, friend relationship, drinking expectation, self-control, family effect have effects on drinking attitude and drinking behavior. As the result of the study, the stress, friend relationship, drinking expectation, self-control, and family effect which are drinking elements show the meaningful difference on drinking attitude and drinking behavior. In this study, I researched the relative influence of various variables in drinking behavior as elements related with drinking of university students. Based upon these study results, I would like to suggest the political implications as the alternatives.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting problematic drinking by university students in the Chuncheon area. Lifelong drinking rate of subjects was 98.1%. Problematic drinking rates according to AUDIT (alcohol use disorders identification test) were as follows: 21.3% 'no problem', 58.0% 'at-risk drinking', 10.0% 'alcohol abuse' and 10.7% 'alcohol dependence'. Research has shown that problematic drinking is more prevalent among freshmen, early drinkers, those with hypochondria, and students who are less satisfied with their campus life or whose own parents are frequent drinkers. It has been shown that more serious problematic drinking is associated with higher 'positive alcohol outcome expectancies' and 'coping motives for drinking', and 'recognition level of drinking cultures' is considered less desirable. Multiple regression analysis revealed that 'coping motives for drinking' was the most significant variable affecting the problematic drinking of university students. Developing and fostering various alcohol-reducing programs that largely focus on 'coping motives for drinking' will greatly contribute to solving problematic drinking.

  • The present study investigated the relationship between parental problem drinking and risk for malajustment in adolescents. A group of adolescent children of problem drinkers(126 boys, 210 girls) and a group of children of non-problem drinkers(190 boys, 222 girls) were compared on demographic variables, perceived relationships with parents(parental care and parental over-protection), depression, anxiety, alcohol expectancies, alcohol involvement and self-reported delinquency. Adolescent children of problem drinkers reported lower level of perceived parental care and higher level of perceived parental overprotection compared to the children of nonproblem drinkers. They also reported higher depression, anxiety and alcohol expectancies, as well as more alcohol involvement and delinquent behaviors. Multiple regression analyses were performed seperately for male and female adolescents with depression, anxiety, alcohol expectancies, alcohol involvement and self-reported delinquency as outcome variables. Adolescents' emotional distress(depression and anxiety) was associated with perceived relationships with parents rather than parental problem drinking, but adolescents' alcohol problems and delinquency were associated with parental problem drinking and adolescents' emotional distress rather than their perceived relationships with parents.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation among alcohol outcome expectancies, alcohol abstinence self-efficacy, perceived drinking norms and alcohol use. This study was conducted via e-mail. Among 392 students who were participated via E-mail, 300 students (male 148, female 152) were met a definition of Wechsler's binge drinking. The results revealed that perceived norms were associated with alcohol use in binge drinking group, while those were not in non-binge drinking group. It was identified that a difference of peer's actual alcohol consumption and peer's perceived drinking was associated with individual alcohol use. Moreover, for binge drinking group, perceived norms predicted alcohol use better than any other factors. Drinking motives mediated the relation with perceived norms and alcohol use. Especially perceived norms affected alcohol use not only by increasing drinking motives but also by itself. Implication of this study is to provide a basis of prevention and intervention of binge drinking for college students.

  • Purpose: This study was to explore the prevalence of alcohol experiences and to identify the expectancy on the effects of alcohol and alcohol knowledge in early adolescents. Method: The cross-sectional survey of 1854 students from seven middle schools in one district of Seoul was conducted by convenience sampling. Alcohol experience and early onset of alcohol use were measured by the Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Alcohol expectancy was measured by an Alcohol Effects Questionnaire. Result: Over sixty five percent of adolescents reported that they had previous drinking experiences. The participants with no alcohol drinking experience had a lower level of alcohol knowledge than those with experience(t=2.73, p=.007). In expectancy on effects of alcohol, girls had a more positive alcohol expectation than boys(t=-2.54, p=.011). Alcohol knowledge negatively correlated with alcohol expectancy(r=-.40 p=.000). In regression of alcohol expectancy, gender and alcohol knowledge were significant predictors explaining 17%. Conclusion: The results support that alcohol expectancy is an important link with early drinking experiences and alcohol knowledge, focusing on the importance of gender differences. Therefore, an alcohol prevention program in early adolescence is needed and should be focused on multidimensionality of the alcohol expectancy with developmental and psychosocial factors for early adolescents.
