  • In this paper, the higher order FDTD(Finite-Difference Time-Domain) method is used to obtain the frequency response characteristics of the cylindrical metamaterial slab. FDTD method is one of strongest electromagnetic numerical method which is widely used to analyze the metamaterial structure because of its simplicity and the dispersive FDTD equation which has the dispersive effective dielectric constant and permeability are derived to analyze the metamaterials. This derived dispersive FDTD equation has no errors in analyzing the dielectric materials but there are some time and frequency errors in case of analyzing the metamaterials. We used the higher order FDTD method to obtain the accurate frequency response of the metamaterials. Comparisons between the dispersive FDTD method and the higher order FDTD method are performed in this paper also. From the results, we concluded that more accurate frequency response for various metamaterials applications can be obtained using the proposed method in this paper.

  • Interpretation of time-domain electromagnetic (TEM) data has been made mostly based on one-dimensional (1-D) inversion scheme in Korea. A proper interpretation of TEM data should employ 3-D TEM forward and inverse modeling algorithms. This study developed a 3-D TEM modeling algorithm using a finite difference time-domain (FDTD) method with staggered grid. In numerically solving Maxwell equations, fictitious displacement current is included based on an explicit FDTD method using a central difference approximation scheme. The developed modeling algorithm simulated a small-coil source configuration to be verified against analytic solutions for homogeneous half-space models. Further, TEM responses for a 3-D anomaly are modeled and analyzed. We expect that it will contribute greatly to the precise interpretation of TEM data.

  • A Hybrid Finite Element Method(HFEM) is applied to solve the electrormagnetic scattering from multi-layered dielectric cylinders. An unbounde region is divided into local boundary regions where a practical differential equation solution is obtained, with the remaining unbounded region represented by a boundary integral equation. If sources, media inhomogeneities, and anisotropies are local, a surgace may be defined to enclose them. Therefore the integral region so defined is bounded, and differential techniques may be used there. Also, in the re- maining unbounded region a boundary integral equation may be formulated using only a simple free - space green's function. Therefore, The local boundary is represented by a boundary - value problem with boundary conditions and solved by the finite element method. The advantage of the proposed method is simple and efficient in the work of electromagnetic scattering. The validity of the results have been verified by comparing results of other method(boundary element method). Examples has been presented to calculate the scattered fields of lossy dielectric cylinders of arbitray cross section.

  • A space-time finite element method was presented for time dependent problem. The method which treat both the space and time unformly were proposed and numerically tested. The weighted residual process was used to formulate a finite element method in a space-time domain based upon continuous Galerkin method. This method leads to a conditional stabie high-order accurate solver.

  • Analysis problems of tunnels whose geometrical dimensions are very small compared with surrounding media can be treated as infinite region problems. In such cases, even if finite element models can be applied, excessive number of elements is required to obtain satisfactory accuracy. However, inaccurate results may be produced due to assumed artificial boundary conditions. To solve these problems, a hybrid model, which models the region of interest with finite elements and the surrounding infinite media with infinite elements, is introduced for the analysis of infinite region. Three-dimensional isoparametric infinite elements with various decay characteristics are formulated in this paper and the corresponding parameters are presented by means of parametric studies. Three-dimensional tunnel analysis performed on a representative example verifies the applicability of hybrid model using infinite elements.

  • This paper presents a modal solution of linear three-dimensional hydrodynamic equations using similarity transform technique. The solution over the vertical space domain is obtained using the Galerkin method with linear shape funtions (Galerkin-FEM model). Application of similarity transform to resulting tri-diagonal matrix equations gives rise 掠 a set of uncoupled partial differential equations of which the unknowns are coefficients of mode shape vectors. The proposed method.

  • As the construction of nuclear power plants are increased, nuclear wastes disposal has been faced as a serious problem. If nuclear wastes are to be buried in the underground stratum, thermo-mechanical behavior of stratum must be analyzed, because high temperature distribution has a significant effect on tunnel and surrounding stratum. In this study, in order to analyze the structural behavior of the underground which is subject to concentrated heat sources, a coupling method of nonlinear finite elements and linear boundary elements is proposed. The nonlinear finite elements (NFE) are applied in the vicinity of nuclear depository where thermo-mechanical stress is concentrated. The boundary elements are also used in infinite domain where linear behavior is expected. Using the similar method as for the problem in mechanical field, the coupled nonlinear finite element-boundary element (NFEBE) is developed. It is found that NFEBE method is more efficient than NFE which considers nonlinearity in the whole domain for the nuclear wastes depository that is expected to exhibit local nonlinearity behavior. The effect of coefficients of the rock mass such as Poisson's ratio, elastic modulus, thermal diffusivity and thermal expansion coefficient is investigated through the developed method. As a result, it is revealed that the displacements around tunnel are largely dependent on the thermal expansion coefficients.

  • This paper presents a novel hybrid time-frequency-domain method for nonlinear soil-structure interaction(SSI) analysis. It employs, in a practical manner, a computer code for equivalent linear SSI analysis and a general-purpose nonlinear finite element program. The proposed method first (calculates dynamic responses on a truncated finite element boundary utilizing an equivalent linear SSI program in the frequency domain. Then, a general purpose nonlinear finite element program is employed to analyze the nonlinear SSI problem in the time domain, in which boundary conditions at the truncated boundary are imposed with the responses calculated in the previous frequency domain SSI analysis, In order to validate the proposed method, seismic response analyses are carried out for a 2-D underground subway station in a multi-layered half-space, For the analyses, a equivalent linear SSI code KIESSI-2D is coupled to ANSYS program. The numerical results indicate that the proposed methodology can be a viable solution for nonlinear SSI problems.
