  • Geosmin removal by biodegradation was investigated in lab-scale slow sand filtration column with different empty bed contact times (EBCTs) and water temperature. Schmutzdecke layer was built up after 30 days operation and biomass and activity were $4.5{\times}10^6\;CFU/g$ and $3.42\;mg{\cdot}C/m^3{\cdot}hr$, respectively. The attached bio-film microorganisms in schmutzdecke layer were isolated and identified. The dominant species was Pseudomonas sp. that had occupied 56%. Removal efficiencies of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and geosmin were 27% and 95% after 30 days operation. In lab-scale slow sand filtration column, geosmin and DOC removal efficiencies were 62% and 10% at $5^{\circ}C$, respectively. And increasing water temperature ($15^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$) increased the geosmin and DOC removal efficiencies (88~100% and 25~42%) in lab-scale slow sand filtration column. Geosmin and DOC biodegradation rates (k) in the schmutzdecke layer (in the upper 5 cm filter bed) were $1.842{\sim}15.965\;hr^{-1}$1 and $0.253{\sim}1.123\;hr^{-1}$, respectively. It were about 18~32 times and 20~51 times of the rates in the deeper filter bed (5~60 cm).

  • Recently, natural disasters, which are hard to predict and prevent, are rapidly increasing due to climate change worldwide. Particularly the damage scale of urban areas is increasing because of local torrential rainfall. In urban areas, the rain water cannot flow to pipes well due to the high percentage of impervious areas by the indiscriminate development. As a result, the inundation damage is getting higher in urban areas. So we need to characterize the interception of the grate inlets to ensure good drainage in impervious areas. But Korean installation criteria of grate inlets does not reflect road and drainage sector characteristics so the grate inlets do not function properly in many areas. In this study, we suggest the interception capacity equations about grate inlets through hydraulic experiments in various conditions. Therefore, the interception capacity changes are analyzed according to bearing bar slopes of grate inlets, grate inlet sizes and shapes and connecting pipe numbers. Though this, we developed the interception capacity equations about domestic grate inlets.

  • Perovskite lanthanum doped lead titanate ($(Pb,La)TiO_{3}$ or PLT) thin films were successfully fabricated on Pt/TijSiO.iSi substrates at the temperatures as low as $440~500^{\circ}C$ by eleclron cyclotron resonance plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (ECR PECVII). Since the volatilities of the MC sources arid oxide molecules (especially Ph oxide) increased with increasing deposition temperature, the film deposition rate and the (I'b + La)/'Ti ratio decreased Stoichiometric perovskite PL'T films with good dielectric and leakeage current properties were obtained at the temperatures of $460~480^{\circ}C$. The lanthanum content of the film was nearly directly propotional to $La(DPM)_{3}$ flow rate. As the La/Ti ratio increased from 3.0 to 9.5%, the dielectric constant increased from 360 to 650 and the leakeage current density at 100kV/cm electric field decreased from $4{\times}10^{-5}$ to $4{\times}10_{-8}A/cm^2$.

  • Seasonal succession and community composition of planktonic ciliates were studied in Kyungan Stream from December 2000 to December 2001. Oligotrichs accounted for 53% of total ciliates. Total abundance of ciliates peaked in spring (30 March, 6 April) and in summer (8 June, 20 July) reaching values up to $1.9\times10^4$ cells $L^{-1}$. Seasonal succession of dominant species occurred obviously. Large-sized $(>50{\mu}m)$ species (Stylonychia sp1, Phascolodon vorticella and Codonella cratera) dominanted from winter to spring. Small sized $(<30{\mu}m)$ species (Vorticella spp., Rimostrombidium hyalinum and Halteria grandinella) dominanted in summer and autumn. Total abundance of large-sized species coincided with the Chl-${\alpha}$ concencetation during the study (r=0.33, p<0.05, n=39). Among the small-sized species Halteria grandinella was a significant relationship with bacterial abundance (r=0.35, p<0.05, n=39).

  • River bed variation drops storage capacity of dams and reservoirs, and furthermore deteriorates safety of banks and peers. Therefore, understanding of bed variation is important to use and manage river water. Study section is downstream part of Ji- Cheon nearby Ji-Cheon Bridge which is located in Gum river basin. The river surveying at fourteen places with the length of 1,320m were undertaken on November 7, 2003 and September 24, 2004, and the results of river surveying were analyzed for the study. Real bed variation was compared with the simulation results of HEC-6 and GSTARS 3.0. Cross section data for the simulation of HEC-6 and GSTARS3.0 were composed of the basis of river surveying data on November 7, 2003. Hydrological data were acquired from Gu-Ryong watermark located at Ji-Chun Bridge. The research results revealed that when using Toffaleti equation, simulation results of two models were similar to the real bed variation. The bed variation simulated by using GSRARS 3.0 with only one stream tube was similar to the real bed variation. The bed variation simulated by using two models(HEC-6 and GSTRARS 3.0) with Toffaleti equation was also similar to the real bed variation. Therefore, it is expected that HEC-6 and GSTARS 3.0 models have applicability to predict the bed variation at the downstream of Ji-Cheon.

  • Migratory insect pest populations migrate from the southern China to Korea through jet streams. In Korea, 5 major migratory insect species are important, i.e. Nilaparvata lugens, Sogatella furcifera, Laodelphax striatellus, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis and Mythimma separate, which are damages to the major crops, rice. This study was conducted from late July 2016 to early September 2016 and from July 2017 to August 2017 in rice paddy of Jeolla-province. C. medinalis and M. separata collected using pheromone traps, while N. lugens, S. furcifera and L. striatellus collected using 3 methods (visual surveys, sweeping surveys, sticky traps). SADIE (Spatial Analysis by Distance IndicEs) among geostatistics was used to analyze migratory insect pests. SADIE was used to analyze spatial distribution and index of aggregation $I_a$, index of clustering $V_i$, $V_j$ were used to investigate the spatial distribution. Also, the clustering indices were mapped as red-blue plot. C. medinalis and M. separata showed different distribution based on SADIE spatial aggregation analysis and red-blue plot analysis. Initial spatial distributions of L. striatellus and other planthoppers were differed for sampling location and time.

  • In this study, a series of survey were conducted to identify the distribution patterns of macrobenthos at the Bongam sand tidal flat in Masan Bay. We collected macrobenthos at 9 sampling sites twice in June and September of every year from 2012 to 2017 using a box core sampler (collecting area, $0.025m^2$). There was a total of 50 species with a community density of $6,388ind.m^{-2}$ and a biomass of $313.9g\;wet\;m^{-2}$ during the study period. Polychaetes had the highest number of species and density among the macrofauna, but the mollusks had the largest biomass. The number of species ranged from 10 to 25 during study period but increased to over 20 species in 2014. The density which ranged from $1,508ind.m^{-2}$ to $12,008ind.m^{-2}$ rapidly increased in 2015. The dominant species were all polychaetes such as Heteromastus filiformis, Prionospio japonicus, Hediste diadroma, and Neanthes succinea. The mean diversity index ranged from 1.2 to 1.9, richness index from 1.2 to 2.4, and evenness index from 0.5 to 0.9. From the cluster analysis results, there was a spatial difference in the similarity of faunal composition of macrobenthos and this pattern was maintained throughout the study period, that is, the temporal similarities were higher than the spatial similarities. There was a change in community composition from June 2014 to June 2015 in most of the sampling sites. During this time, the dominant species also changed from H. filiformis and N. succinea to H. filiformis and H. diadroma. The density of opportunistic species such as Capitella capitata and Polydora ligni decreased compared to the early 2000s while the population of H. diadroma increased from 2015. There was little ecological information on H. diadroma such as when and where this species occurred.

  • The Tae-Jo Geonwolleung is the tomb of the first king Tae-Jo of the Joseon Dynasty in the complex of the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty which is listed in World Heritage, and it contains various types of stone properties. The material of the stone properties consist of a single type of medium-grained biotite granite, however, each properties have different intensity and types in deterioration phenomena according to their locations and purposes. The major deterioration types of the stones are analyzed as physical decomposition and biodeterioration. The exfoliation, breaking-out and granular decomposition are widespread types of the deterioration throughout the entire burial mound stone properties and surrounding stone properties. On the other hands, the colonization of mosses and plants, and contamination by foreign materials are found more frequent in the burial mound stone properties as these stones are in contact with the soil of the tomb mound and moisture in the soil helped biodeterioration. It is suggested that anti-biology treatment and physical reinforcement are applied to the deteriorated stones to prevent further damage on the stone components of the tomb.

  • Indonesia has a very short supply of electricity. As a solution to this problem, plans for construction of thermal power plants are increasing. Thermal power plant require the cooling water system to cool the overheated engine and equipment that accompany power generation, and the circulation water pump chamber among the cooling water system are generally designed according to the ANSI (1998) standard. In this study, the design criterion $20^{\circ}$ for the spreading angle of the ANSI (1998) of the layout of the circulating water pump chamber can not be satisfied on the K-coal thermal power plant site condition in Indonesia. Therefore, 3-D numerical model experiment was carried out to obtain a hydraulically stable flow and stable structure. The Flow-3D model was used as numerical model. In order to examine the applicability of the Flow-3D model, the flow study results around the rectangular structure of Rodi (1997) and the numerical analysis results were compared around the rectangular structures. The longitudinal velocity distribution derived from numerical analysis show good agreement. In order to satisfy the design velocity in the circulating water pump chamber, a rectangular baffle favoring velocity reduction was applied. When the approach velocity into the circulating water pump chamber was occurred 1.5 m/s ~ 2.5 m/s, the angle of the separation flow on the baffle was occurred about $15^{\circ}{\sim}20^{\circ}$. By placing the baffle below the separation flow angle downstream, the design velocity of less than 0.5 m/s was satisfied at inlet bay.
